It is holiday time again. For reasons know only to others, I have had requests to write another holiday blog, so this is it. Today is the first day of our pilgrimage to warmer climates. Normally I enjoy winter, but this winter seems to have got the better of me, particularly the last week or so, so the Fraser Coast in Queensland sounds ideal. This years sojourn sees an addition to our entourage. We now have a roof-top tinny, affectionately know as Das Boot (The Boat - suggested by Frank's brother Wally). Eventually it will have a name on it, just like the van will have some colour applied so it doesn't look like a mobile fridge anymore. But hey, it has only been four years, so what's the hurry. After all, there is a wall ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Yorke Peninsula September 23rd 2013

Yorke Peninsula in South Australia is a pretty part of the world. I love the old stone buildings dotted around the country side. The sandstone architecture is lovely too. We arrived here late on Saturday and went for a bit of a tour on Sunday. A very pretty part of the world, the peninsula is a wheat growing area, which is evident by the huge silos at the ports, like Wool Bay and Ardrossan. There are also canola fields and some other grain crops, I am not sure what exactly. While we were out driving, we investigated jetties along the coast for good fishing spots. Most of the small towns have a jetty, so there are plenty to choose from. We decided on Wool Bay, based on the amount of squid ink marks. On Saturday night, ... read more

Since we arrived at Venus Bay last Saturday, we have been waiting for the wind to drop so that we can go fishing. That day finally came today. In the meantime, we have entertained ourselves by doing pretty mush nothing. We did have a go at fishing from the jetty, We caught nothing, but had lovely fresh whiting and salmon trout for dinner. They were donated to us by some of our fellow caravan park residents. As we walked to the jetty, I started talking to a woman from the site next to us heading the same way. We had seen her earlier in the morning fishing from the beach with a beer in her hand at ten in the morning. Impressive. Anyway, as we walked, she told me that she loves fishing, but doesn’t eat ... read more

The holiday continues, and so does the wind. We have been getting buffeted by wind gusts since arriving, however it did settle yesterday for a while. This morning promised us a sunshine and a gentle breeze, so instead of fishing like everybody else, we chose to go for a drive in search of oysters. We are in the vicinity of Coffin Bay, famous for oysters, so that’s where we headed. We stopped for lunch at Ellerton, about half an hour down the road. That should give you a clue about our departure time. Over a pie and coffee (good pies at Ellerton) Frank suggested that Coffin Bay was a long way, about 220km, so we should go across to Cowell on the other side of the peninsula instead. Cowell is famous for its jade and huge ... read more

Back by popular demand, or because a couple of people asked me too, I am again writing a blog for this holiday. I will start with a quick update for anybody just joining, and for those who were following, because it is a long time between posts. For varying periods of time, we take on the life of grey nomads. In reality, we have a caravanning holiday, but the nomad title sounds good. Also, we aren’t grey. Frank is. However, I have brown hair with golden highlights. Who knows what colour my hair is in reality. Moving on, we are traveling in our home built 5th wheeler, which every trip brings us much pleasure and always an element of frustration. Last year, we travelled with our two dogs, Sally and Bubble. Bubble was diagnosed with a ... read more

Winter is over and spring is here, well according to the calendar it is. We spent the last day of winter in Mallacoota in absolutely miserable conditions. Freezing cold temperatures, strong winds and heavy rain marked the day. It was a great day for sitting around so we went for a drive into Merimbula for lunch and then to Eden for a look and bought some oysters along the way. The first day of spring was much the same as the day before, except we did sit around and kept warm and dry. This change of seasons also marks the end of our holiday. We are currently retracing our steps, as such, and spending a couple of days in Buchan before returning home tomorrow. The weather is absolutely beautiful. We have been sitting out in the ... read more

Fraser Island was lovely, and I strongly recommend a visit there if you are ever in the area. However, if you are going to take your own 4WD, you need to know how to manage the sand roads. We managed to get stuck twice, both times because we had too much air in the tyres. It was just a matter of letting out a bit more air and we were on our way. On our second day we were headed over to the surf beach for some fishing and came across a car towing a caravan. They were stuck, which meant everybody else was stranded until they could be helped out of their dilemma. Why anybody thinks it is a good idea to tow a caravan along those roads is beyond me, and what condition they ... read more

Greetings from Fraser Island, Queensdland. It took a bit of an effort to get here, but here we are. The dog sitter didn’t work out, so the girls are in gaol for a couple of days. They thought it was a good idea at the time, because there were other dogs there. I bet they changed their minds when we walked away. When we collect them on Thursday they can go for a long run (or walk) on the beach. I booked our accommodation and car ferry over the phone and was to receive confirmation by email. After two days without confirmation I rang back to sort it out. Despite Sady, our surname, only having four letters in it, these people managed to get it wrong. They couldn’t find our book initially, and then finally, they ... read more

We have been very busy being tourists the last couple of days. No disasters, unless you count my mobile phone sim card stopping working. That was fixed with a visit to Telstra and a replacement card. The weather has been lovely. There has been sunshine every day with a bit of wind on a couple of days. On one of the windy days, we went for a drive to Childers, north of Hervey Bay, on the way to Bundaberg. We were looking in the old chemist shop, which is pretty much a museum now, when one of the women suggested that we were from “down south”. Frank asked how she could tell. “Because you are wearing t-shirts”. They were both wearing jackets, and then put the heaters on for good measure! Funny what you get used ... read more

Welcome back. You have been gone for a while. While you have been gone, we have been having a holiday. Once on the road again after replacing the broken spring in Maidenwell, we finally reached our destination of Hervey Bay. When we stayed at Tamworth, we were asked if we had booked somewhere, because it will be very busy. Of course we hadn’t, because we have a tendency to stop when we feel like it, hence no definite plans. Taking that question as a bit of sage advice, we studied the accommodation guide to find a park that would take dogs. The first one I rang had a site for us and would hold it. That wasn’t so hard after all. We loved Hervey Bay when we were last here, a lovely seaside town, the hub ... read more
