We've left Khao Sok forest now. We spent one night in Surat Thani since out flight was the next day. We were suprised to find a really nice hotel room to stay in (slightly above our guesthouse standards that we've become used to ie mattress on floor, fan, hot water if we're lucky, and usually bamboo is the main building material). That night we wandered around and ate at the night market. It was my favorite one so far since we were the only tourists and the stalls were food rather than cheap mass produced souvenirs. I found a mango and sticky rice stall and stocked up since we had a fride at the hotel. The highlight of the evening though was our lucky find of a Swensons Icecream place. Chris and I both got huge ... read more

We arrived this afternoon in Khao Sok national forest. The area is magnificent with breathtaking limestone cliffs jutting dramatically into the sky. We are staying at Our Jungle House, (Thank you parents), which is truly quite jungly. The first thing we saw upon going out our front door was an enormous fist sized black and yellow spider. Chris and I were a bit jumpy after that but had a delicious curry meal (I am getting used to the spice) and now the plan is ice cream followed by hour long massages. Not bad for a day of travels. I'd leave it at that but Chris wants a more balanced depiction of our day so I'll hand it over to him for his accounts of the joys of travelling in thailand... Chris here- ok we started our ... read more

This has nothing to do with our travels but I thought it would be a good way to share the news. I was accepted into San Francisco State University's Conservation Biology Masters program today! My chosen advisor, Carlos Davidson, sent me an e-mail letting me know. I am very excited since SFSU was one of my two top choices. I haven't fully decided but I'm leaning heavily toward SFSU, where I'd be studying frogs and there susceptibility to disease and pesticides. Very pleased!... read more

WooHoo!!! We arrived by speed boat, waded through thigh deep waves to the music bumping packed beach after a quick briefing from our boat captain who told us where to meet him ahead of time because it's so loud we can't hear him when we reach the beach. So far the full moon party, 10 minutes in is awesome!. And we have another six hours to go! Fire dancers everywhere and glo paint. We could feel the music before we even left the boat. We're happy and the beaches here are amazing, just like the pictures. Love to everyone Chris and Daniella!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... read more

hey guys we finally found a wifi hotspot on the island of Ko Tarutao, one of a few national marine parks in Thailand. We arrived here yesterday morning after a nice 40 minute speed boat ride from Pakbara. We were happy to get out of Pakbara because it's basically a pier with one street with a few hotels and like two restaurants on it to suit the guests that didn't get a boat that day out. Needless to say its a hot boring place and were hapllpy to arrive on our white sandy beach island. We were the first stop for the boat as it continued onto Ko Lipe, another island technically not in the marine park but still somewhat considered sheltered from the outside tourist world. We were very happy to get off the boat ... read more

Hello all, sorry it's been awhile since our last post. Chris wrote a very descriptive post about his first burger in Thailand in Pai. Unfortunately he lost the article when the internet cut out twice and gave up. We really enjoyed our stay in Pai. It's a touristy area but has a great variety of food, people, and markets. Chris thoroughly enjoyed in first burger at the burger house, run by an american expat. And I enjoyed having a mango and passionfruit pancake along with a love potion tea on valentine's day at the witching well restaurant. After a short flight and long bus ride we're now at pak bara pier waiting for our ferry to take us to Ko Tarutao island where we hope to relax on white sand beaches.... read more

Chris and I and a new friend, Monika, a Brazilian nurse now living in Maine, spent the past two days trekking through the jungle. I don't think I can adequately describe the experience. We walked on a tiny dirt path often very steep and pitted and came to many Karen hill tribe villages. They cooked meals (mostly noodles and vegetables or rice and vegetables. Not enough meat for Chris' standards) for us and we ate them in bamboo huts raised on stilts in smoky and dark rooms. Babies, clad in colorful homemade clothes, puppies, chicks, and piglets run about everywhere. We got drunk with our guide, Mr. Salawin, and his uncle and wandered down to the schoolyard where a beauty pageant was being held. Spectators would run balloons up to the contestant that answered the questions best. ... read more

We were a bit nervous when after a four hour bus ride through smoky mountains we were dropped off in a dusty town with not a tourist or a word of English in sight. We ended up loving our day though.we found a restaurant with a beautiful view of the river and I was quite proud of myself when I pulled out by binoculars and found a bright blue, red headed kingfisher. Then Chris convinced me to rent a motorbike! It's such a small town, with no traffic, so we felt safe we had a great time whizing around town.... read more

All of our days are very full but here are a few highlights that we've experienced so far. After ferrying across the river we somehow found ourselves in the middle of a school yard with tiny Thai children running circles around us as they giggled behind their hands and said hello. They kept saying "you, you!" and speaking Thai. We think they wanted us to eat with them in their cafeteria but we thought we probably couldnt actually do that unfortunately. Having a foot massage in chiang Mai after a morning full of walking. The ladies thought it was hilarious that Chris was so ticklish. I think she purposely sought out his most ticklish spots ie toes. Feeling relaxed, we headed to wat chedi luang which I had read about in the lonely planet. After some ... read more
