Walking tour of Hoi An. Temples. Covered bridges. Boat ride across the river to a village of boat builders. Cultural show and handicrafts. Hoi An has loads of tailors who will whip up just about anything thing in next to no time. Tash and I shopped, made some choices and had some fittings then as we drank cocktails, played pool and ate dinner our frocks were fashioned. Wayne once again (unbeknownst to me of course) managed to procure an amazing birthday cake and have the staff and guests sing happy birthday. We shared cake with fellow travellers and the kitchen and bar staff. Brilliant birthday!... read more

Today we took a tour around the city. First the mausoleum. We were unable to view Ho Chi Minh as the mausoleum is closed Monday and Friday for cleaning. The complex surrounds and the stories from our guide were impressive regardless. Next the One Pillar Pagoda that is believed to improve fertility. Wayne climbed up to take a look but the rest of us steered clear just in case. The Ethnological Museum was great in side and out with displays of buildings created with traditional materials and methods by the specific ethnic groups. As the mausoleum was closed we had some extra time and Lis suggested a stop at a lacquerware shop. So not somewhere we would usually choose to spend time but the artisans here were so impressive and the products so good that we ... read more

We started our day with Tai Chi on the sun deck before getting ready to sail back to the harbour. Before we left we we visited the Surprise Caves. There were 3 separate caverns The Surprise Cave the Amazing Cave and the Shocking Cave. Each had impressive features and although they may well have been spectacular the sheer number of visitors basically unrestrictedly touching, photographing and walking over has led to them being fairly ordinary and sadly grubby. Eking out the last of our Halong experience we lay on the sun deck watching the scenery go by as we drifted back to the pier where we caught a bus, stopping at the same type of tourist trap, back to The Boss in Hanoi. Wayne picked up some pizza, pasta and shopping mart beer whilst out getting ... read more

Some feeling a little worse for wear with early breakfast and a transfer to the sightseeing boat for our excursion to Lan Ha Bay. We visited a Pearl Farm which was pretty much the grubbiest part of the bay that we saw and despite the "You no buy, you will regret" I have no regrets (well not about not buying pearls but maybe about the amount of gin consumed last night). We chugged further along into Lan Ha and stopped to kayak around some of the formations by Three Peaches Beaches including the Bat Cave, Dark and Light Cave and kayaking under and through many of the formations. A glorious day that included much lying around in the sun and enjoying the breathtaking scenery that we were cruising by. We finished the day by climbing to ... read more

After breakfast we left Boss and picked up another couple. Typical stop on way at giant tourist shop with silk and lacquer ware and giant stone turtles. On arrival to Halong Bay 3hrs later we were ushered to the Glory Cruise waiting area and offered tea whilst we waited for our fellow cruisers. A tender took us out to our junk. Really lovely timber interior with lots of velvety accessories. Once everyone was on board we cruised through the bay with the massive limestone rocks passing by as we had lunch. We stopped at a fishing village and kayakked around. A fellow traveller lost his iphone from his pocket as he got out of the canoe so our return to the boat was delayed a little as one of the local guys tried diving for it. ... read more

After a 4am wake up call we left the Limetree in their car (MYR46 for the 4 of us to the airport) with a packed breakfast which sadly didn't live up to the standard set there so far. Kuching to Kuala Lumper was quick and easy. The stopover in KL meant Starbucks for Nic, Tasha and Sonia and after a slight delay, we were on to Hanoi. On arrival at Hanoi airport we completed the applications for visas and handed across the letter sent by Steven from AsiaEyes along with passport sized photos and our passports. The applications were processed immediately. We waited mere moments then were asked for the USD45 for each visa in cash. Unfortunately I had forgotten that part of the process. Wayne asked for an ATM and the officials gestured to the ... read more

Another yummy breakfast with something to please each of us. Eggs to order for Wayne, traditional Vietnamese for me, pancakes for Nic and lots of fresh fruit for Tash including a little lime salads in shot glasses. A city walk to replenish Tasha's Choki Choki supplies (tubes of chocolate goop that she apparently first discovered back home but can't get any more - she was very excited to find some yesterday in one of the supermarkets). We got some giant pretzels, booked a sunset cruise then after Starbucks Nic headed back to the hotel while Wayne Tasha and I went to the museums. The private museum that charges for entry is not worth the time or money to see a few chunks of petrified wood in mouldy rooms. The museum of Natural History and the Cultural/Ethnological ... read more

Taking it easy was the plan considering the damaged toes. Wayne suggested a quick walk to get some lunch and take photos of some of the cat statues around the city and the kids were pretty agreeable to the idea. After a wander around we ended up down at the waterfront where Wayne's notorious bargaining skills got us a trip across the river that divides the city for MYR8 (usually 40 sens each). The revised plan was to visit Fort Margarita although we had been fairly clearly told the fort was closed for some restoration work. Not surprisingly when we reached the fort the site was closed. Rather than returning to the jetty and heading back to the hotel to continue the promised rest day Wayne led us a 'better way'. After roaming around what appeared ... read more

Delicious breakfast at Lime Tree then collected by Rainforest Trekking for a visit to Semongoh Orangutan Conservation Centre. It was a bit rainy and as there is loads of fruit around at this time of year we only saw 2 orangutans - the Matriach of the group, a 44 year old grandmother and her newest offspring. They were enjoying some fruit and mum decided to make a hat out of a few handy leaves. Bub tried to follow mum's lead but with limited success. So cute and we felt happy to see these and even happier that the others in the program must be doing well enough in the jungle not to have any need for the prepared fruit provided. We saw some groovy pitcher plants and headed to a local village to embark on the ... read more
