Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Waiheke Island July 12th 2012

We made an impulse decision this morning to do the Auckland Bridge Bungeewhich was really cool. The walk under the bridge has nice views over the harbour. The water is just so clean and clear, quite impressive for an industrial port. The 4 of us leapt out over the water where just minutes later a pod of dolphins swam through. Wayne even enjoyed the walk, as a spectator he got a taste of the bridge climb. The boys dropped Tash and I at the ferry where we caught the 11am Waiheke Explorer Tour ($49 includes the ferry $35 plus all day bus pass $9 plus an island tour). Waiheke is beautiful - every cove and bay and hill a picture postcard view. Although our tour guide Glen didn't seem to approve we abandoned our tour at ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Orewa July 11th 2012

Driving north over the harbour bridge. Waiwera Thermal hot Pools and Spa looked very popular with the locals (what kid wouldn't want to go down a heated water slide on a cold day?) but we decided just to go for a stroll along the pretty beach and continue up the coast. Orewa was another nice beach and we stopped for coffee and cake in the park. There are quite a few walks in the area. We chose to tramp around Alice Eaves reserve. Although some of us ended up a little off-grid the entire area was lovely with native forest remnants, an estuary, nice views (not from the lookout though) and shady spots to sit. Next stop was the Honey Centre where we tasted lots of honeys as well as meads and liquers. Yum! Tash bought ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo Caves July 10th 2012

The kids played early morning icy putt putt while I scraped ice from the windscreens then we headed out to Zorb. Even though the tracks were covered in ice Nic and I did a multiperson Zydro . Tash did a zig-zag Zydro and Jess did a straight Zorbit. Yay! Lunch in the park in Cambridge on our way to Waitomo was pretty average but it was an easy if longish drive. Wayne, Tash and Jesse were booked into a Spellbound tour. Nic and I were going to do some blackwater rafting but considering timing, how cold it was and how good all the reviews for the Spellbound tour were we decided to join the others. The staff, service and overall experience of the Spellbound tour was amazing. I have seen glow worms before but nothing like ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua July 9th 2012

We hired a car from Alternative Rental Cars- the guys there were great and we got an excellent deal ($150 for 5 days). Having a car meant we could head further afield so south to Rotorua where we stopped at Agroventures for our first bungee and also to try out Extreme Freefall and Jesse and Nic Schweebed. Bungeeing was amazing. So much fun and nothing like I expected. Unfortunately as interesting as it is to see mud boiling and steam pouring out of the ground (even out of the street drains) the overpowering sulphur smell was not much fun. Wayne and I enjoyed a hot soak (which was surprisingly less stinky when in the thermally heated water) followed by a sprint in the icy night back to our rooms.... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Devonport July 8th 2012

An all day explorer pass for $16 lets you catch ferries buses and trains all day. The ferry accross to Devonport is quick and Auckland has such a pretty harbour. Our Magic Broomstick segway tour was brilliant! The segways are soo much fun to ride and the tour was interesting with a great mix of local stories, history, architecture, tunnels, stunning views and tasty treats to keep us all happy. Because we had a day pass we decided to jump on the first train to arrive when we got back to the city (the ferry terminal, bus stops and train station are all really close together on the harbour). We got out and had a look around Newmarket which is obvioulsy a high end suburb with lots of brand name boutiques so not really our style ... read more

Return flights from Gold Coast to Auckland including a week's accomodation with brekky (yoghurt+banana+muffin) for around AU$500 was just impossible to pass up so here we go... Arrival at midnight was no problem - we caught a minivan taxi (with 5 travelling together it was the cheapest option as the shuttle is $35 each I think) for about $75. Our hotel (Bianco Off Queen) was just off Queen St (the main road) heading to K Road (a more diverse street) making it a great spot for us to base our adventures. We started with a walk down Queen St to Cafe 1 where we picked up a bunch of brochures (with deals and vouchers as well as info and maps), nice coffee and a free Sim card (these are available from a couple of places and ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago January 29th 2011

We say our goodbyes to South America with cheeses, fruit, wine and empanadas from the local market in our 24th floor apartment. Another amazing day. We are truly blessed. Sorry the entries have been a little light lately but have been more into doing stuff than writing about it. Love love.... read more

South America » Chile » Easter Island January 25th 2011

Regardless of the name its like an open museum with the added bonus of cool geographic features (like lava flow caves) and sparkling clear waters. The massive moai were amazing and we were lucky enough to run into the director of archaeology doing some photography and measurements on the latest dig and he showed us a newly excavated moai and where in the mountain it came from, explaining what they found etc. Oh and flying there and back 1st class was an experience in itself!... read more

South America » Chile » Atacama January 22nd 2011

After some minor dramas (make sure you pay your national park fee not let the guide pocket it). We had an easy, if slow, border crossing to arrive in Chile on a hot sunny day. San Pedro de Atacama is a lovely little village in the desert mountains of the region. We loved the thermal springs as well as following the Puritama River through a valley of green with cactii towering above us on every side - so beautiful.... read more

Had everyone wrapped in layers for the trip I believed would be freezing. The heater was unbearable people were down to singlets and shirts it was quite unpleasant. Uyuni is full to overflowing with touts hoping you will choose their tour company for your visit to the salt flats. They all seem to offer something very similar and I have heard of people on the same trip who have paid quite different amounts. Never mind we had already booked tour through Kanoo to go with Tupiza. There were day tours, overnights and any other variety of trips. We ended up with a British couple - so only 6 of us plus the guide/driver who spoke no English so I was primary translator lol. The salar itself is really incredible the other sights on the tour include ... read more
