Up early and checked out with Wayne and I madly searching for baby formula and towels (the things that our guide had mentioned by email I should try to bring along to the Elephant Santuary). No luck with the formula (it turns out this was not a problem as the sanctuary had plenty and they are beginning to wean some of elephants off it) and Wayne managed to grab towels from a hardware store (many shops and stalls do not open till after 10am so this was a win). Our driver Mr Zul arrived and we began our drive out to Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary (drive to sanctuary, storing our bags all day and getting us to the airport on time MYR600). Mr Zali had given instructions for us to stop at a petrol station and ... read more

Santa mustn't have got the memo that we cancelled Christmas and we all woke to goodies by our beds then quickly headed downstairs to the van to take us to the Cameron Highlands for the day (2-3hrs). We stopped on the way for breakfast. Dunkin Donuts for most of us but Wayne chose a soup and giant chunk of meat. Our first stop once in the highlands was a waterfall which was obviously a popular swimming hole for the local kids and our guide bought us all some banana fritters. Then we visited an Oran Asli family who showed us their tiny house made from bamboo. 'Michael' showed us some target practice using a blow pipe and much to everyone's shock and surprise Wayne agreed to have a go and nailed it first go (the local ... read more

A train from Kuala Lumpur station at around got us to the Batu Caves (MYR2 each - about a 20 minute ride) nice and early before the crowds. We walked up the 272 steps behind the giant golden statue. The temple was interesting and the naughty monkeys were amusing. We ate breakfast in Restoran Rani an Indian restaurant by the caves. Most of us had pancakes - Jesse had chocolate, Tash chose banana and Wayne had caramel and mayonaise. Tasha got her hand hennaed (MYR10) but was not feeling great as her asthma was playing up so her and Jesse headed to the hotel for a rest whilst Wayne, Nic and I went adventuring. We wandered past the national mosque, butterfly farm, bird park and through the lovely botanic gardens that provide a nice green, calm ... read more

Bus from Malacca to KL (MYR12). I'd booked this one. There were no breakdowns and it only took a couple hours but we all agreed Wayne's bus from Melakaman was better. This one smelt of cigarettes, was crowded and cramped. Wayne was stuck next to a man with a dyed beard who was not enjoying the ride. Tasha was squished behind someone who had their chair reclined even though they were sitting forward :/ and I lost my phone. The KL bus terminal was an easy train ride (5 stops on the Rawang line MYR4.50) to Kuala Lumpur station followed by a short walk across the river (aka teeming cesspit) to Hotel Geo where we were staying. The hotel is directly across the road from Central Market on the edge of Chinatown close to night markets ... read more

We started our day with a visit to the Swift Discovery museum where we learnt how this magical combination of bird spit and feathers is made into soup, drinks, etc = yuk. To escape the heat for a while we headed to the Mega Mall. Did a little shopping. Aced the indoor carnival complete with ring-toss, poorly sited air rifles, chocolate wheels, darts etc. Ate lunch in the mega food court then split up. Nic and Jesse went to the cinema to watch the new hobbit movie with delicious caramel popcorn. Tash and I got manicures and pedicures back at the Baba House. Wayne continued his self-guided walking tour and lined up (along with people from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and even Korea) for the best Chicken Rice around. If you are interested in trying it for ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Johor » Johor Bahru December 21st 2013

Not a very appealing breakfast and a stinky wait (not sure if durian or sewer) for our maxi taxi to the bus terminal which is around 5km out of town (MYR20). There are plenty of buses from Johor Bahru to Malacca many not leaving till 10.30. As we hadn't booked and were there at 8.30 Wayne hastily chose tickets from a gentleman calling "Melakamelakamelakamelakamelaka" for MYR21 each (I think tickets are generally between 17 and 20). If you disregard the fact that we had to walk out to the road to get on the bus that was hardly "new" as described by Melakaman, the breakdown, the busdriver's regular mobile phone conversations and off key singing and the drop off near to rather than in the Malacca bus terminal it was a fine trip. Asia » Singapore » Singapore Zoo December 20th 2013

Up for an early morning swim. We checked our bags in with the concierge then grabbed a couple of taxis out the front of the hotel to take us over the other side of the island (SGD27-30) to the zoo. Breakfast was a buffet. A quick diversion to feed some elephants who literally purred with appreciation. As breakfast continued a few of the zoos orangutans chose to visit - they have a fairly large area in which to roam and this cafe is part of that so as fruit and seeds are provided they come across and deign to sit around whilst the silly humans gawk at and photograph them. The zoo as a whole has fairly large and well maintained enclosures and we spent a few hours there. As luck would have it the flashest ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Raffles Marina December 19th 2013

We flew Scoot out of the Gold Coast. The flight was brought forward a couple hours without any real notice and the seats we had paid extra to book were not what we ended up with but the flight was fine and on landing in Singapore customs and immigration were efficient and problem free. We went straight to the transport counter (just before the taxi rank) and organised a van for 5 of us plus luggage (SGD60). Our first impression of Singapore was how clean and neat and organised everything appears. The Marina Bay Sands porters and check-in were friendly and the door guy was suitably embarrassed when he greeted Nic as Ma'am-Sir (in his defence he approached from behind so saw the luscious locks before the manly mo). As we waited around 10 minutes for ... read more

Coffee and Movenpick icecream in Mission Bay and around the harbour up to the headland was a beautiful drive with paths and photo ops aplenty. A putt putt challenge and some dinosaur taming at Lillputt before returning the car and getting in the taxi the car rental guys had organised to the airport. The boys hit up the BK for a final NZ onion rings feast while Wayne bought the obligatory woolly lamb from the gift shop then it was farewell Auckland and hello Gold Coast (after an hour holding pattern and landing in Brisbane then bussing to Coolangatta). I really enjoyed our first taste of NZ and we will definitely go back and spend a bit more time exploring.... read more
