Taxi transfer was waiting when we arrived (80 pesos from town). After the hostel I think everyone was a little dubious at the wisdom of choosing accommodation based on internet pics if the looks on their faces when we headed off the main road and onto a squishy red mud side track were anything to go by. Rio Tropic however was perfect (well almost - wireless was pretty sketchy) quiet and pretty with a nice pool and great staff. Nic and Tash were very excited to find that the caramel spread (their favourite thing about the previous accommodation) is pretty much the national dish (dulce de leche) and was part of the delicious breakfast served with fresh bread rolls, medialunas (croissants), fresh fruit, yoghurt, excellent coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. We met the lovely Lisa ... read more

We wandered around Retiro this morning - transport hub where trains, buses, ferries and subway converge. Nice parks and some interesting buildings. Staff at Art Factory Hostel ($13/night) are great and the art work is impressive but the floor so badly termite damaged that we were in constant fear of falling through and the broken glass, tack and nail in the shower stalls will not be missed. Funniest taxi to the airport... Cars drive on the opposite side of the road over here and it can be a little disconcerting sitting in the passenger seat especially when every driver subscribes to the Wayneo school of thought (road markings and speed signs are clearly "guidelines only") so as the driver was putting bags in the boot Wayne headed to the driver's seat out of habit. The taxi ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Luján November 30th 2010

Mastered the Subte (underground rail system) today which is an excellent and cheap (1.10 pesos per trip - like 30 cents I think - no matter the distance or stops) way to get around the city. Our plan for the day was a visit to Lujan Zoologica (zoo). We caught the number 57 bus to Lujan (10.50 pesos from Plaza de Misere so less than $3 to go about 40k South of BA). As you arrive in the centro (centre) the massive church looms. Whether you are religious or not the architecture and stained glass of the immense church (grand basilica) is truly impressive although the abundance of dogs roaming around the square and lazing inside is a little bizarre. Taxi back up the road to the zoo (30) and entry to the zoo (160.00 = ... read more

An early start saw us enjoying peak hour traffic in Sydney - yay! Don't think it was until we saw polar ice floating by under the plane that it struck me how far away we were heading. Awesome!!! No taxi to meet us as arranged but there is a yellow cab booth right outside so we got to our hostel in San Telmo for AR$145/USD38. We have already crossed the widest Avenue, wandered around a chunk of the city, ordered and eaten delicious epinadas, booked in for all you can eat BBQ night, passed a protest, looked into seeing a Tango show and managed not to fall through the floor of the hostel dorm which has a squeaky fan and termite damaged floors. Everyone has fallen asleep (fair enough considering its (6am on the 30th in ... read more

Ok so I have confirmed flight details and transport to our first hostel from the airport. Yes we are flying Qantas and no I'm not worried as their planes are not actually falling from the sky, in fact I personally think its a good thing they keep finding problems - better than missing them eh? Thanks to Wayne's mum and dad for an early Christmas dinner last night and to his sister for accompanying beverages, travel tips, books and a back pack (I am about to go pack now - honest). Great to see my family too - love you guys xoxox ... read more

So we head off next Saturday and I just wanted to set this up to check if people could sort links etc Super excited and a little less organised than I'd like (yeah, yeah I can hear the gasps of shock at this). Bought a pack that Tash can carry today (she is such a short puncy girl) and organised a prescription for shots I need to get Tuesday (the last-minuteness of this one is sooooo not my fault - really). I am going to try to add a map and photo just so I can figure out how the whole blog thing works. I believe you can subscribe in some way to get an email letting you know when I manage to post an entry. Ok here goes :)... read more
