Today we slept late after staying up talking to a new friend from Columbus Ohio by the name of Matthew. We sat talking till 2am and for those who know me, this is a miracle, I am in bed by 10! We are about to leave the warm weather and head into the cold, so it meant prioritizing the cold gear. We meandered around the town, sitting on the porch rocking chair, Deb being good writing postcards, then off to a local tourist dinner shack where we had mini hamburgers (Jyes, does this bring back memories) and I even had a local beer!!! We shared this with Matthew, then back to the hotel to change and our new other friend Kimo picked us up and brought us to the airport - we have arranged to meet ... read more

Deb and I are off on a White Christmas Holiday (my first Christmas away from home!) From Hawaii to the Canadian Rockies First day of the trip!. Melbourne put on some heavy rain showers to send us on our way. Just so that we could become acclimatized to the weather we are told to expect in Victoria. Had a long stop over at the Qantas lounge in Sydney, then thankfully were in the least passenger infested rows on the flight - Deb and I had a row each of four to ourselves and stretched out for the night after watching Mamma Mia (it is the only safe place to sing along as no one can hear you!) We arrived in Honolulu at 6.30 am and after finding the shuttle, we arrived at the hotel to find ... read more

Back to Thailand and Pattaya. I decided to take a two day trip to the River Kwai. Mainly, I wanted to go to a tiger sanctuary run by monks for their preservation. It was a very early start. I was to be picked up at 5am, but the bus got lost, so I was sitting on the front step until 20 past 6, oh I could have done with the extra sleep! It was a stinker of a hot day, over 40 degrees and a poor airconditioner in the bus meant that the water consumption was high. On this trip, there was me (the aussie), an English guy, two Norwegian, two Finnish, one French policeman and his Thai girlfriend and the driver. We arrived at the town of Kanchanaburi, and went to a restaurant called the ... read more

After arriving late into Hanoi, a long drive by cab into the city, approximately 45minutes and driving through dark and gloomy streets to our hotel, which was supposed to be ‘deluxe’ with all the mod cons, well con it was, not any mod's in sight. Because we were short of time, we had booked a one day trip to Ha Long Bay and had tried for a one day trip to see the hill tribes. While the bay trip was easy to arrange, it all got too hard trying to get the hill tribe visit up and running (will have to save that and Sapa for another time. What a surprise the next morning, we were up bright and early for our arduous trip and on going out into the street it had been transformed, bright ... read more

Another day in Hoi An, found another tailor close to the hotel who was half the price of the one recommended, and her work we saw done was superb. Had a couple of skirts made and Sue had two traditional Vietnamese outfits made, the first tailor had said it wasn’t possible (turned out superbly). At the tailor, there was a group from Iceland. One of them a very keen Liverpool supporter had a picture of the club’s emblem and was going to have it embroidered on the back of the suit he was having made. I asked why Liverpool and he said there were no good Icelandic football clubs. We were there when he picked it up later. It looked great he was one very happy and proud fan. Now to the orphanage mentioned before, the ... read more

After two luxurious days floating around the pool in stinking hot weather, it was time to move on. (I tried in the early hours of the morning to walk to the Village about 2.5k from the resort), it was so hot even walking along the beach, that I almost fried. I saw some fishermen who work in thatched circular boats coming in after a mornings fishing. The closer I got to the village, the dirtier the beach became, in the finish it was completely clogged with refuse, dead animals and the ubiqitous plastic bags. The village was small, but clean and friendly, although I was too hot to enjoy it, knowing I had to walk back. I completed the walk, had breakfast and fell in the pool, feeling like I never wanted to get out. On ... read more

Today, traveled around HCMC (HoChi Min City) and saw how different things have become here since communism has taken over. A once architecturally beautiful palace has been modified to become a concrete block as the Reunification palace where the former president lived before he was executed. It was interesting to see the slant the information written on displays at the war museum definitely anti the west. I find I get angry about the things that happen in was and ended up outside talking to people (much rather meet the here and now), although you meet an assortment. One thing that struck me was the American helicopter out the front, my immediate reaction was to take a photo and call it the original from Miss Saigon. Talking about the here and now, I met some great people ... read more

Well hasn't Vietnam been an adventure so far. We flew from Bangkok on Vietnam airlines and did not fall from the sky - far from it, some of our airlines could learn a thing or two, talk about speedy and full service, although for a plane that was commissioned in 2004, the seats were very tired. Getting a hotel was not the easiest as there are so many tourists at present, but we have a very pleasant, but small hotel in downtown Saigon (HCMC) were the staff are oh so helpful. Although luckily I had read the guide book which warns you of a scam by taxi drivers who try and get you to another hotel. In the taxi, the driver hands me a mobile phone and a man at the other end says 'sorry i ... read more

last night Sue and I updated our blogs at the internet game shop around the corner from Nitya's. It is used exclusively by young Thai boys to play games. Really noisy and dark, I am sure they are quite confused at two foreign old ladies on computer. We certainly stood out in the crowd. We were trying to find flights and a hotel to Saigon. The flights were no problem but we still have to pick up the tickets at a travel agent as we have to produce our passports. Finding a hotel in Saigon has proved not to be so easy. We may just have to turn up and find somewhere to stay when we get, There are lots of street sellers who come down all the suburban streets each day . This is ... read more

During our few days here in Pattaya, it has been a feast of possibilities and frustrations. On paper there is a great deal to see, but there are also the difficulties of being in a local area with little knowledge or resources. Nitya has been great to have us, she has cooked, cleaned and entertained royally. She and Sue went treking into town for suit fittings etc whilst I reclined in bed recovering from my 'wog'. It has been very hot, in fact even the Thai's are complaining. I decided that due to the lack of pool or water features at home, I created my own, a tub with water and a sun lounge. The tub just happened to get emptied over Nitya and me when we got too hot. Travelling consists of an open 'taxi', ... read more
