Well, time flies when you are at sea! Busy, busy, busy. No Internet, no phone etc. So this is the first entry for a while. I finally got over the cold and was able to spend a few days with Cynthia and Bill, also Bill’s brother and sister-in-law who were on a bus trip through the former Yugoslavia two years ago. We went to Ocean City and a few different places before I flew out to Ft. Lauderdale. I have been to Mark and Warren’s place in Ft. Lauderdale a number of times, so it was just a pleasure to catch up with them and spend Easter with them. Yes!, the Easter Bunny found me. Then it was off to St Maarten for the beginning of the sailing trip. St Maarten is divided into two sections, ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver March 31st 2012

Day one a sleepy stopover in LA followed by a loooooooooong flight to Vancouver. I arrived early to catch my flight via San Francisco, only to have over 2 hours wait! It was touch and go as to if we would catch the Vancouver flight, but we ran and just made it. Vancouver was cold but pleasant. I arrived at 12 midnight and had not had any dinner so it was a search for some ‘healthy’ food, not much is opened in Vancouver at that time. The next day it snowed in the morning (just a little), and then cleared up. I went to Granville Island (put in info) and the Granville Market, which reminds me of the Vic. Market without the jam doughnuts. In fact, Granville reminded me of the old Dockland area where Festival ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bremen » Bremen January 9th 2012

January 1st 2012, a new year, hopefully a much better one than the last! I was off for a week in Bremen. Phillip and Nadine dropped me of in the Schnoor (I wrote about this in the first blog). I was staying for 3 nights in one of the original houses in the Schnoor. It is one room wide and 4 floors up and my room was in the attic. I was the only guest of Birgitte, a lovely lady who opens her house to one or two guests at a time. The stairs were something! They were tiny, Phillip worried I would break my neck going to the bathroom - well I am still here to tell the tale!! I wasn’t quite sure if I was a character out of Virginia Andrew’s ‘Flowers in the ... read more

It was interesting to go to a movie in English, in a German town, we saw Mission Impossible as it was the only movie showing ‘in original tone’ (in english) and to see so many of the places I have been to in the world and of course the movie finishes in Seattle! The next few days were family oriented - shopping, preparing food, playing cards (universal language), eating, more shopping, more eating. I took to riding the bike and walking a lot as it was a necessity to burn off some energy! Pierre and I went out tree hunting - a little different to those we have in Australia, of course it is colder, so it makes you decide a lot quicker. You also have to trudge around in muddy fields as it is so ... read more

Europe » Finland » Lapland » Rovaniemi December 18th 2011

We arrived in Lapland around 5pm, of course it was so dark, it was like midnight. We finally arrived at our hotel after a mixup and being taken to the wrong hotel, where of course they new nothing of us arriving! It was a quite pleasant -5c. There was quite a bit of snow, but more icy - rather like the Australian snow fields. We walked around the town of Rovaniemi -Since Rovaniemi is the capital of the Province of Lapland, many government institutions have their offices there. About 10,000 of the inhabitants are students. Rovaniemi is home to the university of lapland and the Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences. Over 70% of Finnish people are tertiary educated, which is the highest percentage in the world. Rovaniemi's most prominent landmarks include the Jätkänkynttilä bridge with its ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bremen December 10th 2011

After a very long flight, I arrived in Frankfurt and wandered around the airport for two hours before catching the next flight to Bremen. It was great to be welcomed by Phillip and Nadine (who were waving madly through the doors on the other side). I met Nadine’s father who presented me with a bunch of flowers and we braved the wintery weather to go to Delmenhorst (their home, which is like Eltham from Tullamarine) but it is quite a way from a large city, such as Hamburg. So a rough equivalent would be Bremen would be Frankston and Hamburg would be Melbourne - and Delmenhorst would be Mornington (apart from the fact that it is inland, not by the sea). I received a warm welcome from Maria, Nadine’s mother and although to me it seemed ... read more

Asia August 16th 2010

Early morning start, booked into see Orang Utans feeding at orphanage in ShangriLa Rasa Ria at 10am. This meant an 8.15 start. Where it was very poor on the way to see the monkeys the other day, this side of the island is very beautiful. There is so much development going on, there must be some growth in the economy. There is great emphasis on sport and education. The KK university is HUGE, and almost resort like. We arrived at Rasa Ria, next to the wildlife sanctuary is this deluxe resort. This sanctuary is a feeder to the Sepilok sanctuary - babies stay here until they are 4 or 5 before being transferred to Sepilok. This centre was developed to bring the 'man of the forest' back from extinction (by the way, they have 96% of ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu August 13th 2010

Just more days of sitting by the pool, really hard to do!!! Went around the outskirts of the town and looked at the sporting complex that is just outside the town. It is still a very poor area, although they are trying to bring more in the way of tourists to the country. There is a big bowls tournament in town and we have four Aussie men representing NSW, and they are in the top 10. Went to wetlands and bird sanctuary but I only saw two pigeons and a rooster! He, of course, managed to see a monitor lizard swimming, some fish and the fleeting blue streak of a kingfisher. We did however manage to see the rare thong tree, along with many thong floating flowers, along with the not so rare empty water bottles ... read more

Oceania » Australia October 21st 2009

After my trip to Cap's place, it was time to sort out the clothes, pack the bags, have a farewell dinner with Mark and Warren and off to LA. I spent two days just relaxing in LA, went on a trolley ride to the beach and shops and nothing much else. Home was via the A380, a big plane which took off and landed with ease. Although it was a good plane, I had wanted to upgrade to have one comfortable trip, but alas, the plane was full and no chance of an upgrade. Back home, the grass was 'as high as an elephants eye', ants had invaded everything, the back patio had collapsed due to lots of rain - so, back to the real world, hmm, where can I go next?... read more

North America » United States » Washington » North Bend October 1st 2009

Here is the last part of the journey. Arrived in Seattle on the 22nd and was picked up by Kimberley on a warm autumnal day. That night we went to yoga class (I managed most of it) and were warned to be careful on the way home as there had been bear and cougar around. Dammn! didn't see a one, only a squirrel! Kimberley said that there are often elk in the yard, but as yet I have only heard them, (sound like a wolf cry) not seen any. the next day Kimberley had to work in the city so I went in early and had the day in town. The first port of call was at the Port area. Pike place Market. It is a public market overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront in Seattle, Washington, ... read more
