Tuesday, August 3rd Another day in El Salvador. An even earlier wake up time, although again we slept quite well and awoke over an hour before we needed to, a decent breakfast and we were on our way to the Los Angeles community to finish the houses. This time, the women went to places by themselves and just us guys (and one more adventurous young lady) worked on houses in the community. Soon after lunch, we'd finished the last of the ten houses, so we were taken on a preliminary tour of the Los Angeles 2 community we'd work at tomorrow. This community was even more impoverished looking, and from the looks of things had a lot less families living there. Unfortunately, being the newer of the communities, all that has been done for them so ... read more

Monday, August 2nd: After a good night's sleep, it was another excellent breakfast before heading back out to LA to finish up "my" house. After arriving at the camp and stowing my personal gear in the church, I was told they wanted me to work on a different house today, the one the leader was left out of after get rather sick yesterday (By the end of the day today he was back in good shape.. stress, the heat, or both). So, after a quick photo of the previous house, I went to work on one that had the walls more or less up. By lunch time, we had that one pretty much finished, with the walls up, the door and windows installed and the corrugated roof well under way. When I returned to help put ... read more

Sunday, 1 August: We awaken at 6am or so, without an alarm clock, having slept quite well after our long day of travel. By 7am we were having a delicious breakfast at our hotel, including not only excellent local coffee, but scrambed eggs with salsa ranchero, pancakes, fresh fruit (Cantaloupe, Mango, and watermelon), and believe it or not refried black beans. Actually, the beans went quite well with the eggs. After breakfast, we loaded up our two regular minibuses and headed to Los Angeles, the refugee camp near Santa Ana. While wading thru the anxious attention-loving kids, we were divided up into 5 groups and put with five groups of locals (some were hired and some were volunteers), to each build a house... by the end of the day tomorrow! Keep in mind, these houses are ... read more

Saturday, 31 July We left the house at 3:30am and joined up with the other 29 Hillcrest Baptist Church missionaries. We had no problems with connections or seats all the way to El Salvador, although we did observe the usual "I can't fit my luggage in here" and "you're in the wrong seat". Getting thru customs and out with our luggage (2 LARGE suitcases each, plus carry-ons!) was a matter of organization and helpful customs folks. Upon leaving the customs area, we quickly saw a lady holding up the Moody Missions sign and figured that would be us. Sure enough, in no time at all, we were loaded up on two small buses and a pickup truck and headed towards our hotel in Santa Ana. My first impressions of El Salvador is that it looks and ... read more

Well, its just about time to leave... 7 hours and we're on our way to the airport, Jeep loaded to the gills! Hopefully, a map of the trip will show here and everyone can get a better idea of where we're going. We'll be flying from Pensacola to Atlanta, then from there to San Salvador in El Salvador. We'll be there for 7 days doing mission work for the Hillcrest Baptist Church. My wife and I will be Spanish interpreters and I'll be helping to build houses for a refugee camp. Next Saturday, when everyone else returns to Pensacola, we fly from San Salvador to Lima, Peru. From there we travel by bus (21 hours!) to Puno on Lake Titicaca, where we are scheduled to take an overnight tour to the islands, staying with a native ... read more

Monday, June 29 (Crater of Diamonds State Park): We left around 8am for the one hour or so drive to Crate of Diamonds State Park near Murfreesboro, Arkansas. Along the way and even more so when we entered Murfreesboro, both Manoli and I wondered about how little traffic there was on the road and how deserted Murfreesboro seemed. Could the Crater of Diamonds State Park be less popular for some reason than we’d expected, or are we still in this economy doldrum? Well, all that changed as we turned the last corner on the park road and spotted the parking lot. Still not even 9:30am and there were at least dozens of cars in the lot! The park also has a small water park which was already getting busy. After reading the signs and watching a ... read more

Sunday, June 28 (St. Louis West KOA to Hot Springs KOA): Well, another day of mostly travel. We left St. Louis a bit after 8am, stopped at a TA Travel Center for a very good lunch at their Country Pride Restaurant, then continued on to Hot Springs, Arkansas. This KOA is a bit different, in that it is laid out on a series of hills. Very nice though, with a big office/store, a pool, game room, two laundry rooms, and a separate mini golf area. After checking in, we decided to head into Hot Springs to find a good place to eat dinner. The road we entered town on was Grand Ave., straight from the KOA, and until we got near the center of town and Central Ave., it seemed like a ghost town. Granted, it ... read more

Saturday, June 27 (Elkhart KOA to St. Louis West KOA): Not much to write about today. We left the Elkhart/Middlebury KOA this morning just after 8am and stopped at a KFC/Taco Bell along the way for lunch. We’d reset our watches to Central Time just before that and were trying to adjust our routine by eating a later lunch than usual, but didn’t expect the KFC/Taco Bell place to help us out, by taking over 20 minutes to fill a simple order for two! The father and son next to us had waited almost 40 minutes for their lunch. Not sure if they were short-handed or just slow, but it definitely redefined “fast food.” Arriving at the St. Louis West KOA just after 3pm, we unloaded, and then decided to go for a swim. This was ... read more

Friday, June 26 (Amish Communities Tour): We started our day by heading towards the American Countryside Market near Elkhart that Manoli wanted to visit. It was quite busy and contained not only a number of interesting shops, but some folks set up out front as a sort of flea market. We didn’t find anything exciting enough to buy, but we did try a breakfast pretzel stuffed with eggs, ham, and cheese. Yum! Next, we decided to check out two different furniture makers that were supposed to have tours where you could watch them make fine hardwood furniture. The first one, Schmidt’s, was pretty empty and the receptionist seemed to have never heard anything about tours, so we moved on. The second furniture place, Lambright Woodworking, wasn’t buy either, and although they were quite friendly to us ... read more

Thursday, June 25 (Niagara Falls KOA to Elkhart Co./Middlebury Exit KOA): Having a longer than normal trip ahead of us, we got up pretty early and hit the road. Other than having to pay tolls in New York, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, the trip was pretty much uneventful. We stopped for lunch at Arby’s and arrived at the KOA at about 3pm. The Elkhart/Middlebury KOA in Indiana is a bit larger than some of the others, and fairly occupied for once. By this point in our trip, the temperature in the 80s was welcomed. By the time we’d unloaded, it was too late in the day to see much of the area and it’s famous Amish communities. We’d read about the Das Dutchman Essenhaus Restaurant, so we decided to have dinner there, seeing a bit of the ... read more
