Das Dutchman Eissenhaus
Das Dutchman Eissenhaus near Middlebury, IN. Thursday, June 25 (Niagara Falls KOA to Elkhart Co./Middlebury Exit KOA): Having a longer than normal trip ahead of us, we got up pretty early and hit the road. Other than having to pay tolls in New York, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, the trip was pretty much uneventful. We stopped for lunch at Arby’s and arrived at the KOA at about 3pm. The Elkhart/Middlebury KOA in Indiana is a bit larger than some of the others, and fairly occupied for once. By this point in our trip, the temperature in the 80s was welcomed. By the time we’d unloaded, it was too late in the day to see much of the area and it’s famous Amish communities. We’d read about the Das Dutchman Essenhaus Restaurant, so we decided to have dinner there, seeing a bit of the area along the way. As we entered Middlebury, we started seeing some of the Amish and their buggies, but not much more so than we had in the Pennsylvania Dutch area around Lancaster. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were surprised to see a lot of cars and people, then discovered they were hosting a classic car show. There were some really cool cars
J.C. at Das Dutchman Eissenhaus
J.C. having coffee after dinner at Das Dutchman Eissenhaus. there, all the way back to the 20s and 30s. Being fairly light eaters, we decided to not try the family style all-you-can-eat buffet again, but they did have a special buffet at only $10.95. All the food was pretty good, although nothing special, except the noodle dish and the peanut butter and apple b utter. They were excellent! After dinner we browsed thru a few of the nearby stores and gift shops, then headed back to the KOA to plan our strategy for tomorrow.
