CUSCO - DAY 2: Friday , August 13th: We woke up around 5am, not being able to sleep any longer. We were planning on a nice long hot shower, but lo and behold, no hot water! I convinced the cafeteria staff to let me take two hot coffees to our room. Ahhh... After the necessities, we went to the cafeteria and had a decent breakfast of juice, coffee, rolls with jam or butter, eggs, and yogurt with fruit. Speaking of the cafeteria, strangely enough, although it is literally next doofr to our room, we had to go to the center of the hostal, down stairs, back to the front of the hostal, then up stairs! By this time, it was well after 8am, so we decided to find the All Trek Cusco office near the Plaza ... read more

Puno Day 3 Wednesday, August 11th: I did actually get some more sleep at about 3:30am. I woke up a bit past 6am and found my wife was already up and taking photos of sheep. After the necessities, we were served breakfast by Valentina. Breakfast consisted of crepes with a strawberry marmalade, a hard boiled egg, and coffee. Everything was very good. After eating, and before leaving, we paid Valentina for our homestay. 25 Soles or about $9 US each is not bad for a night's stay and 3 excellent meals! After our goodbyes, we hiked down to the dock to get our boat to Taquile Island. The trip took about an hour and we didn't break down this time. The guide explained that we'd leave the boat and hike about 45 minutes to an hour, ... read more

Tuesday, August 10th: Puno Day 2 - Uros, Amantani Islands: Between the high altitude and having dozed frequently before getting to Puno, we both had a very bad night's sleep. We tried to sleep at 8pm or so, but after tossing and turning and having strange mini-nightmares, I got up at midnight and went for a walk. I had to bother the hotel security guy since the door was locked. I walked down the hill to the Plaza de Armas looking for a soda and/or water. When I asked a group of police patrolling, they pointed to the corner where a vendor was asleep in a doorway. Before I could tell them not to bother him, they'd roused him from a deep sleep. Since he was already awake, albeit sleep-eyed, I bought a Coke and a ... read more

Puno Day 1 Monday, August 9 ***I'm posting this one a bit late, since the hotel WiFi was down. August 10th is in the works. Here we were, content with our trip so far on Cruz Del Sur, and trouble raised its ugly head. Although the bus only left Lima 5 minutes late, we had so many stops and detours on our way to Arequipa that we ended up getting there an hour and a half late, at 8:35am today. Unfortunately (stating it mildly) the connecting bus to Puno left at 8:30am as scheduled, even though our bus stewardess had radioed them that we were running late. Five minutes! We got our refund for the Cruz Del Sur trip to Puno and my wife quickly located another bus line with a bus for Puno leaving at ... read more

Sunday, August 8th: ***Somehow or other I forgot to post this, so I'm adding it after returning, over two weeks later! We woke up later than normal (7 or 8am!) since for once there was no rushed schedule. After a decent breakfast in the hostal, we headed out to stroll around Lima, and try to find a laundry mat. We had a week's worth of clothes from El Salvador we'd washed in our room that never dried and we were running out of clean dry clothes. The hostal clerk directed us to a couple of nearby laundry mats and away we went. Being Sunday, we weren't sure how much was open. When we easily located one of the places indicated by the clerk, it was closed, with no sign showing their hours of operations. We asked ... read more

Adios El Salvador... Hola Peru Saturday, August 7th; Out last day in El Salvador started at 6am, as usual, and after breakfast we were on the busses heading to the airport. We arrived in the airport, safe and sound by 10:30 or so. After the long bus ride, the restrooms were our first priority! Although there are restrooms inside the airport's departure area, the only place outside was at the end of the arrival area. San Salvador's airport procedures are definitely a bit different than we are used to. You have to do the usual passport and ticket check followed by the usual scan of all items, removing shoes, belts, etc. Here, my only problems were the lighter I forgot about in my fanny pack (which they unbelievably saw on the xray and knew exactly where ... read more

Friday, 6 August; Today was our fun day with Mr. Moody. We left the hotel and headed for Ahuachapan and beyond to visit a really cool waterfall called Las Cascadas de Don Juan. The falls are sort of southwest of Santa Ana. The drive was pleasant and not all that long, with interesting folks along the way at the beginning and interesting natural scenery afterwards. The waterfalls were bought by a local guy all the way to the top and he runs a mini tourist attraction. Besides the waterfall, which only costs a dollar or two (including parking), they have a very nice store/restaurant with good clean restrooms to boot. The folks there were very helpful and willing to explain the flowers and other natural stuff they had on display. I got to see what a ... read more

Thursday, August 5th; Today was our group day, spent doing stuff just for the church and seperate from Moody Missions. We left the hotel a bit later than planned because we first made a trip to the local Super Selectos to buy a bunch of water, then a stop at a pharmacy for some sinus medicine. We finally left at about 9:30am for our trip to the "mountain church" and then to the orphanage near La Libertad. After a nice easy trip on the highway to our turnoff for the mountain church near Comasaqua, we traveled about 10 kilometers on a nicely paved but often terribly steep road, then another couple of kms on a similar road made of dirt. We were so glad to get there safe and sound, especially my wife who is very ... read more

Wednesday, August 4th First of all, I should clarify my use of titles. At first I was saying Santa Ana Refugee Camp, and now I've been using the more appropriate title of Los Angeles Commnity. There are probably a number of other "commnities" around Santa Ana where the families that are either made homeless by flooding, earthquake, or mudslide are given small parcels of land to use as their homes. In both the original Los Angeles community suported mostly by Kenton Moody Ministries and the newer and smaller Los Angeles 2 community, the average family lives in a 20 foot by 30 foot (my estimation) plot with tree limbs, boards and wire for fencing and a combination discarded tin signs, hunks of wood and whatever else they can scrounge up for houses. Generally speaking, they only ... read more

Tuesday, August 3rd Another day in El Salvador. An even earlier wake up time, although again we slept quite well and awoke over an hour before we needed to, a decent breakfast and we were on our way to the Los Angeles community to finish the houses. This time, the women went to places by themselves and just us guys (and one more adventurous young lady) worked on houses in the community. Soon after lunch, we'd finished the last of the ten houses, so we were taken on a preliminary tour of the Los Angeles 2 community we'd work at tomorrow. This community was even more impoverished looking, and from the looks of things had a lot less families living there. Unfortunately, being the newer of the communities, all that has been done for them so ... read more
