Hadrian's Wall Path is a 135 kilometres (84 miles) trail that follows the course of the stone wall that was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, who came to power in AD117. A frontier road had already been established, after failed attempts to conquer Scotland, and Hadrian decided to construct a wall from coast to coast, separating Scotland and Britannia. It would run from the River Tyne, east of Newcastle, to Solway Firth, west of Carlisle. Construction of the wall started in AD122 and it took around ten years to build. The wall was 15 feet high and around 8-10 feet deep. I had arrived in Carlisle the evening before. Due to logistics, I had decided that it was easier to stay in Carlisle for two nights and take the bus out to the starting point ... read more

I was definitely rough when I woke up. Being by the door had meant I got little sleep as people were coming and going all night. At least the hostel had a nice common room to chill out and eat breakfast in. I think we were all glad that by doing Glencoe yesterday, our guide was able to push our departure time back to about 9 or 10, if I remember correctly. The first part of the morning is a bit of blur due to tiredness. We stopped somewhere to take some photos of some Hairy Coos, I can't remember if this was on the side of the road or at a coffee place. My brain is/was fried. After all the gorgeous weather weather we'd had for the past few days, it had turned crappy again. ... read more

Today was the day I think we were most excited about as we were of on the Hogwarts Express! When booking the trip there was the option of paying extra to take the Jacobite Steam Train and being a fan of Harry Potter, I just had to do it! We left Fort Augustus after breakfast and headed to Fort William, where we would catch the train. On the way, we had a short stop at the Commando Memorial. What a beautiful spot! The Commando Memorial was built in 1951 by the sculptor, Scott Sutherland, to honour the original British Commando Forces. It is located near Spean Bridge village, overlooking the training area the Commandos used. You can see Ben Nevis in the background. It was such a peaceful place. Knowing nothing about the memorial, I am ... read more

A free day! It was our driver's rest day, so we would not be on the move today. Haggis had given us a leaflet with activities on it earlier in the trip and we could pick some if we wished or just do our own thing. I had decided sod the cost, who knows if I will ever be back here and plumped for two of the activities: the rib boat trip up to Urquhart Castle and canoeing. Breakfast was included at the hostel, so I helped myself to some of that. It was pretty good; cereals, toast, baked beans, hard boiled eggs and spreads. I think there was tea and coffee too. I'm glad for once that I didn't stuff myself as the boat trip might make me a little sea sick. We headed down ... read more

So the long journey to the Orkney Islands now had to be done in reverse and we were leaving, heading back to the main land and to Fort Augustus. I really enjoyed my time here, and would love to come back to further explore these islands and also head further north to the Shetland Isles. We drove back to the port at Burwick and caught the ferry. The journey was about an hour and uneventful. I enjoyed a sausage butty and a brew for breakfast. Back on the mainland, we stopped at Badbea, in Caithness, which was a clearance village. There was a sign on the gate at the entrance to the clearance village warning us that helicopters would be spraying chemicals on the bracken. The sign had today's date on Tuesday 16th August and the ... read more

We had a fairly early start as we would be cramming a lot in today. Our first stop was, of course, Tesco so we could pick up some lunch and snacks for during the day. The lovely weather that we'd had yesterday seemed to be continuing, so our guide suggested that we buy some disposable BBQs and some food to cook on them. What a genius idea! It would make a nice change from having a bog standard sandwich or wrap. We bought some of those burger and bun sets that most supermarkets do. It totally reminded me of my childhood as I used to have them for my tea every so often. Then we were off to explore the Orkneys, yesterday's sneak preview had left me wanting more. Our first stop was the Standing Stones ... read more

What a horrible early morning! We left at some ungodly hour (I forget the exact time, but it was around 7 am or before it). The hostel had made us breakfast boxes up, to be honest they were a bit shit and I wish I'd saved my cash. Luckily, our new guide knew the score and left us to sleep the ride away. We drove through Golspie continuing on our way north. We also drove past the shortest street in the world, Ebenezer Place in Wick, which is just 2.06 metres long. Our first legit stop was Duncansby Head, which is the most north-easterly point in the Scottish mainland. The weather was bit brisk when we got off the bus, which was probably a good thing as it would help chase the cobwebs away.We took a walk ... read more

It was another early start. I had a bit of an upset stomach and a headache, I wonder if it was the fish and chips or the mushy peas. After popping some pills I felt better and headed over to the bakery to get some breakfast. We were setting off pretty early, but luckily the local bakery opens even earlier so we could get some food into us, before another busy day ahead. I got a coffee and a bacon and black pudding pastry wrap, which was delicious. I love black pudding. There was also a mouth watering selection of cakes and biscuits, so I got one to have a little later. On the bus we drove for a bit to reach Loch Fada viewpoint, well it wasn't a proper viewpoint, as we just pulled over ... read more

Not a great night's sleep, so I was pretty tired when I hauled myself out of bed. I enjoyed a quick breakfast before it was time to leave. I had really enjoyed staying in Stornoway and would love to come back and explore the area so more. But today we were off to the Isle of Harris and then making our way across to the Isle of Skye, so it would be another busy day. We did a quick Tesco stop to pick up some supplies as we wouldn't really be stopping in many places with civilisation. As we were driving out of town, I noticed that a lot of the shops were religious ones, charity shops and bookstores selling religious texts. We asked our guide about this and she told us that the Outer Hebrides ... read more

I'd had a great night's sleep and was up early. We were staying in Stornoway again tonight, so I was happy I didn't have to pack up. The hostel included a simple breakfast of cereal and toast so I helped myself to that before getting on the bus for our tour of the Isle of Lewis. It was going to be a busy day as there was a lot to see. We did a quick drop in at the local Tesco so we could stock up on cash and stuff, then we were on our merry way. We drove for about an hour, from east to west, to reach our first stop of the day, Abhainn Dearg distillery. What a way to start the day! A trip to a whiskey distillery!
