Almost
It was starting to melt as I was taking some pics so I had to eat it ;)

I love pottery
I love the pottery you've photographed, and it fascinates me that pottery contributes so much to anthropological deductions of lost civilizations. I'm very glad you got a photo of the ice cream, because for the life of me I couldn't picture a two tailed tiger ice cream - very cute! :)

Anthropological Deductions
I would love to know more of the backstories of the individual pieces. To be able to time travel and be a fly on the wall and see them in use and how the people who used them lived their lives.

Bayi Square

Now that is a grand monument!
Very striking indeed.

It is, especially when all lit up at night.

Guava Milk Tea

Yum!
Stinky tofu in a confined space, or any space really, is a hard pass from me. But this guava milk tea - yum! I don't think I've seen guava flavour over here, but I will look out for it now :)

Guava Milk Tea

Stinky tofu done right is so good. ;) Yes, look out for the guava flavour.

Gorgeous architecture
Thanks for taking us along on this walk. I love the ancient town architecture, especially those porticos - grand to look at but also functional for everyday use. And I'm a sucker for a fried egg too - it sways my decision every time! :)

You're welcome.
It was a lovely place. I was worried it was going to be a total tourist trap, but it was so quiet. Fried eggs are the best :)

Chikan Ancient Town

The Colonel
This cracked me up! Especially because for a split second it looked like his eyebrows were his eyes... and he looked very unimpressed :)

Chikan Ancient Town

The Colonel
He does look very unimpressed. It's like he is thinking, "why am I doing this?"

Apps?
Thanks for sharing your trip! You mentioned buses you took and translation apps. I am having a hard time finding how to navigate China without Google Maps and without literacy of the written language. Could you share some of your resources that helped you get around? Any apps in English are appreciated! Thanks!

Apps
Sorry it took me so long to respond. I use A Map, it is in Chinese but you can often type in the name of something in English and it will autotranslate it correctly most of the time. It is simpe to use and just takes a bit of getting used to, but you can screenshot the page and use WeChat translate.

I can see what you mean that it felt like somewhere in SE Asia. I really enjoyed the whimsical style of some of the architecture... and I like how it tells the story of influences at a particular time in history :)

Li Garden

Miniature
I love these! But I wish they'd pruned the shrubbery a bit better - that would have really messed with my sense of scale :)

Li Garden

Haha!
They are cute. They should have trimmed them as it does throw it off kilter.

Beef Claypot Rice

Claypot
I have Asian friends who are crazy for claypot dishes, but I've never really understood the hype. I've mostly had the Thai and Malaysian versions with vermicelli noodles, so I probably should try the Chinese rice version - it looks good :)

Beef Claypot Rice

Claypot
They have never been high on my 'to eat' list, so I am with you on not getting the hype. I was never a huge fan of Bibimbap in Korea, too. I was pleasantly surprised by the claypot in Kaiping. The restaurant had excellent reviews online so I think that helped as well.

Fusion architecture
I've never heard the term Diaolou and I'm intrigued by your descriptions and photos of them. It's sad that so many of them are abandoned, but making it a tourist attraction and charging a ticket price will hopefully mean the houses will be preserved in some form. Thanks for sharing this unique experience with us :)

Diaolou
I think they are unique to this area of Guangdong. I do feel like the entrance fees in China are generally on the higher side but worth paying as most places are spotless and employ a lot of staff to care for and maintain the environment(s). I would love to return and see more of the buildings open to the public.
