Well the start of my flight was eventful as some bloke had disrespected the pilot and then refused to get off. Not being the most patient person in the world, I was foaming that this bloke was kicking up a fuss and delaying us. Malaysian security were far too nice, they should have smacked him and dragged him off the plane a lot sooner. Eventually we were up in the air and the rest of the flight was uneventful. Melbourne airport was rammed. I'm glad I was able to do the scan yourself in security as that was really quick and after queuing to tell them about my dirty boots, I was free to go. My friend was waiting in the arrivals hall and we headed to the car. Brr! Melbourne was cool and a little ... read more

18th Jan: I enjoyed my hostel breakfast out on the balcony looking out over the mountains behind Ipoh. I got chatting to a guy who had been staying in my dorm, we booth commented on how we liked the chilled out vibe Ipoh has going on. I was really jealous when he was telling me about travelling to Thailand in the 80s, and how beautiful and different it was back then. I really wish I could time travel. I almost didn't make it out of the hostel because when I got to the bottom of the stairs the metal door was locked. Luckily, there were some keys in reception so I could unlock the door. It took about ten minutes to walk to the station and I waited for my train, which was on time. The ... read more

When doing some rough planning of my trip, I had decided that I really wanted to visit Ipoh for some reason. However after consulting with my friend, who'd lived in Malaysia, she'd advised not to go if I was going to Georgetown as they were similar and to go to the Cameron Highlands instead. Luckily, I had enough time on my itinerary to visit all three places. However, I would only be having a quick pit-stop in Ipoh. The bus journey from the Cameron Highlands was uneventful and took around two hours, maybe a bit longer. I really can't remember. The bus station in Ipoh is miles out of town and all the hostels say what a ballache it is to get from there to the city centre. I had researched online how to get there ... read more

I had a booked a full day's tours so that I could see and do as much as possible in my full day in the Highlands. We left around 9 am, in a battered old jeep. There was me, the guide and a Korean family. We drove for about an hour, maybe an hour and a half. It was a beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies. I was content watching the scenery pass by from the window. We turned off the main road and headed along a dirt path, it was quite muddy, but our jeep made it up and we didn't get stuck. We were off on our hike through the jungle to see the Rafflesia. We headed along the path for a while, before taking a turn (that I would have never spotted) ... read more

It was an early start for me, I was getting picked up from the hostel and taken to the bus station by minivan. I managed to get some breakfast and headed down to get my key deposit and wait for my ride. When I got downstairs, there was no one about and when someone did turn up, it was all a bit if a rush, as they had to go and get someone else who could give me my money back and the minivan driver had turned up and then buggered off. Luckily, he was just waiting in his van around the corner. There were a few other pick-ups and soon we were deposited at the bus station in town. I had tried to book a minivan seat to get to the Cameron Highlands as it ... read more

I had decided to venture to Kek Lok Si Temple, so armed with the bus number provided by reception, I headed to the bus stop. I had to wait a good 10-15 minutes for the bus to turn up. I paid my couple of ringgit fare and got myself comfortable. The bus took quite a while to get there, as it made its way through Georgetown. I loved seeing all the different people going about their business. I love the multiculturalism in Malaysia. The bus wound its way out of the city and into a more suburban area. I am surprised at how green and hilly this area was, when I think of Penang I think of the city and beaches, it's nice to be proven wrong. The bus went through a small town and I ... read more

After spending yesterday cooped up in a series of minivans as I made my way from Ko Lanta to Penang, I was ready to explore and walk my socks off today. Breakfast was included at the hostel, so I headed up to the common room to help myself to that. The coffee was strong, just how I like it, so I had to have several cups. Cereal, toast, eggs and spreads were also available, not a bad deal at all. Sun at the guesthouse in Ko Lanta had given me an itinerary of places I should visit in Penang. He had listed two things for each of the two days I would be here. But first things first, I just wanted to have a wander around exploring the streets of Georgetown. I headed out and just ... read more

10th Jan: I was up fairly early as I was leaving Ao Nang today. I wish the weather had been better and that I could have explored the area some more, but I guess that wasn't too be on this trip. I was taking the boat to Ko Lanta and my pick-up was arranged for 9:40 am. That came and went and I was still sitting there. The people who were getting the minivan to Ko Lanta were picked up at 10 am, and I was still sitting there. I was coming to regret my decision to take the boat. The poor guys on reception called the travel company a few times and kept telling me that they were on their way. Finally, well after ten the driver turned up. There were a few people already ... read more

7th Jan: My flight was a quick one, only taking a little over an hour to reach Krabi airport. From the airport I took the shuttle bus to Ao Nang, which stopped off at Krabi Town on the way. The journey took maybe two hours and I was deposited in front of the hostel, Pop-In, where I would be staying. From the outside it looked like a pure party hostel, the music was blasting and there were loads of people drinking in the bar. My kind of hell as I am too old for this kind of shit. Check-in was quick and when I inquired about tours was told that the hostel offer their own as well as all the ones offered by other operators. I was interested in doing their tour for the next day, ... read more

5th Jan: Arrived at Don Mueang around 10 am, headed straight for an iced coffee to wake me up. Forgot how sugar is instantly added to all coffee beverages in South East Asia. The girl seemed so pleased when she told me she hadn't made it too sweet. I was gutted but at least it was drinkable. I took the A1 airport bus to Mo Chit, it cost 30 baht and took about half an hour. There I transferred to the BTS skytrain. I was made to dump my coffee cup before heading through the turnstiles, I hate not eating the ice in my iced coffee. BTS was 42 baht and I think it was about 10 stations to Nana, where I was staying. A five minute walk had me at the hostel. It was about ... read more
