Our last day at Cradle Mountain National Park. We had high hopes for the day and really wanted to go to Hanson's Peak and Lake Rodway. However, when we took the shuttle bus down to Dove Lake the weather was really crappy, so we just decided to do the Dove Lake Circuit instead. Doing a longer hike, which was on a steep uphill slope in the rain did not appeal and we thought it could be a little dangerous. I think our bodies were still recovering from past exertions, too. A definite sign I am getting old. The weather was pretty miserable, but we hadn't come all this way to sit in the hostel, and we hadn't really spent much time at Dove Lake when we had been there a couple of days earlier. We started by ... read more

After our long day's hike yesterday, we decided to take it a bit easier today. Also the weather was pretty bad, so we didn't want to do too much in the rain. We slept til a little later and then made ourselves some breakfast burritos to set us up for the day. I hadn't had a breakfast burrito in ages. We used to eat them quite often on hiking trips in Korea, so it was good to reminisce. We headed to the visitor centre and took the shuttle bus to the Interpretation centre. From there, we walked to Knyvet Falls. The waterfall was really pretty. In fact, the whole area is just stunning. It's just so green and because of the rain, it looked very lush. We had decided to to the Dove Canyon circuit. The ... read more

We were up early to head to the transit centre to take the bus to Cradle Mountain. The walk was quite slow going as we were like a couple of pack horses with all the food we had bought. We had stocked up in the local supermarkets as options in Cradle Mountain would be limited and very expensive. The bus journey took around three hours and we passed through a few small towns on the way. We were deposited outside the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre and it was just a short walk across the road to our accommodation. We had a private room, I think we had just booked out a dorm room to ourselves, but I can't quite remember. We dumped our stuff and headed to the shared kitchen with all our food and made ... read more

It was another early morning departure. We took the bus back to Bicheno, where we had a quick break. The bus driver took pity on us and said that we had enough time to run over to the bakery for a coffee and savoury scroll. Then it was the drive back to Launceston through the beautiful countryside. It was a bit of a trek from the bus stop to where we were staying, but we mae it in the end. We were a bit disgruntled to find out that bedding wasn't included especially as we had booked a private room. We had sleeping bags for later in our trip, but they were packed away at the bottom of our huge pack and we really didn't want to disturb everything for the sake of one night. A ... read more

Happy Australia Day! We set off early after a quick breakfast, following the route we had taken the day before. We planned to do quite a long hike today as it would get back in the saddle for our multi-day hike in the Three Capes at the end of our trip. We came to the beach and the national park office area and then headed along the road to main part of the park. We weren't so lucky today and no one stopped to offer us a lift, so we had to do the whole walk, the uphill parts were a bit tough and it added at least another hour on to our hike. Not what we wanted when we had a long day ahead of us. I really wished that there was a shuttle bus ... read more

It was a very early start! The van ride to Coles Bay was extremely early. I think around 6:30 am. Luckily, the bakery was already open so I could get a coffee to make me slightly more awake and something to munch on. It was a bit nippy outside. Once again, we were the only people on the bus. It was a small van, but it was nice having it all to ourselves. The drive to Coles Bay was pretty short, less than an hour if I remember correctly. The van driver knew exactly where we were staying and dropped us off on the main road nearby. We had a short walk up to the office. Since we had arrived so early, the office wasn't open and we had to wait a while for it to ... read more

The flight from Melbourne to Launceston was very quick, only around 55 minutes. I was very thankful for this as the small child sitting behind me spent the duration of the flight kicking the back of my seat. We took the airport shuttle bus into Launceston. Since our bus to Bicheno wasn't leaving until the afternoon, we had a few hours to walk around and take a look at Launceston. We were able to leave our bags at the transit centre with the bus company that we would be using to get to Bicheno. It was a gorgeous day as we set out for a stroll. I decided that I would definitely need a hat for our trip, especially when we would be hiking the Three Capes later in the trip. We came across the Boag's ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Great Ocean Road January 23rd 2017

When visiting Melbourne, I knew I wanted to see the Great Ocean Road. Ideally, I would have liked to do a 2 or 3 day trip taking so that I could see more of the area, however since the main focus of my trip to Australia was Tasmania, I was only spending a few days in Melbourne, so a day trip was all I could realistically do. It was an extremely early start that morning as we headed into the city centre. We walked to the pick-up point and waited there for our tour. There were lots of different tour groups leaving from this place, but it seemed well coordinated. I also like the small coaches they use here instead of the monster tour buses. We left the city and drove for a couple of hours. ... read more

We headed back into the city today. We walked to the downtown area and since I had forgotten to eat breakfast I grabbed a samosa at a convenience store, delicious! As we were walking towards to the main station, we saw some intriguing looking alleyways. So, we took a detour to explore them. Hoiser Lane is a small street filled with graffiti art. I loved looking around all the little alleys that were connected admiring the different artworks, even the bins are covered with graffiti. It was pretty busy with other tourists and we saw some on a walking tour. I wish that if we'd had more time in Melbourne that we could have done a walking our of the city. I definitely need to get back to this city to explore more. We took the ... read more

Growing up in the UK in the eighties and nineties Neighbours was an integral part of my childhood. I used to love watching it after school, or even better if I was off poorly, getting to watch it at lunchtime. When I worked out that I would be visiting Melbourne on this trip to Australia (I didn't on my previous trip), I knew that I had to visit Ramsay Street, so I booked a tour online a week or two in advance. We headed into the city early that morning, taking the train from where we were staying in the suburbs. The train didn't take too long and wasn't too expensive, only a few dollars. We got off at the Flinders Street Station which I presume is main train station in Melbourne, I got a shock ... read more
