I took the subway, line 12, to Tilanqiao station. I came out of exit one, crossed the main road and headed left for about a minute or two. I could see a big sign pointing the way to the museum and I was pretty much on top of it. I bought my ticket at the ticket booth, 20 RMB for standard entry. There is another ticket for 45 RMB, which includes a coffee at the White House Tavern on one of the neighbouring streets, but seeing as I had recently just imbibed one, I didn't really fancy another. The ticket booth is just across from the entrance, so after getting my ticket I headed in. The museum is housed in the former Ohel Moshe Synagogue, which was established in 1907 and moved to the present location ... read more

Asia » China » Fujian » Fuzhou February 21st 2018

I had arrived in Fuzhou the previous evening and since it had been late, just headed to my hotel. I had no intention of visiting Fuzhou, which is the provincial capital of Fujian province, but the lack of train tickets available because of the New Year holiday meant it was necessary. I had a day to explore so made some tentative plans of what I could see and do in that time. Breakfast was included in my hotel. I got down to the breakfast room just before the mad rush. The breakfast was pretty crappy, normally I like traditional style Chinese breakfasts, but everything here was just so bland. I was glad that I had coffee in my room as there was none on offer. After checking out and leaving my bag in storage, I headed ... read more

19th Feb: I enjoyed one last walk along the beach in Xiamen and since it was really early it was quiet. It definitely wasn't the quickest way to get to the subway station but it was the prettiest. The subway system in Xiamen is still relatively new. The train was really clean and quiet. It took about 30 mins, if I remember correctly, to get me to Xiamen North Station. Since it was the holiday, the station was packed. Also Xiamen Bei wins the award for nastiest train station toilets in China, they were foul. My train journey was a short one and I barely had time to get comfortable in my seated before we reached Quanzhou. I took a taxi to the main temple in Quanzhou, which is near where I was staying. For my last day in Xiamen, I decided to head to the botanical gardens. There area few entrances, and I decided to head to the main one, which meant I went back through the train tunnel that I'd had a look around the day before. From the tunnel, it was about further 10 minutes walk to the gardens. There were about a million people there. The queues for the ticket office were pretty long, but one seemed to be a lot shorter than the others so I joined that and got my ticket fairly quickly. I headed inside, the botanical gardens are massive and I decided to try and see as much as I can. I took a random path that didn't really lead to anywhere special, but there were some nice views of the city ... read more

After another breakfast outdoors, I was ready to head out and explore some more of Xiamen. I got sunburnt yesterday, so made sure that I had my sunscreen on. I had also decided to spend some of today indoors so that would help my sore skin. I had decided that I wanted to visit the Overseas Chinese Museum. I could have taken the bus to get there, but I decided to walk as it was only a few kilometres and I expected the traffic to be as horrific as it had been the previous day. The walk to the museum took about an hour or so. I enjoyed my walk along the beach following the same route as the day before. I also followed the road in the direction of the temple, but whereas I went ... read more

I left things rather late in planning for my Chinese New Year holiday. I had very limited options as my passport was at the immigration office, meaning that I could only travel by train. Since it was New Year, most of the trains were fully booked. I had a couple of option head north to Shandong province to visit a couple of places I really wanted to go to there, or head South to Xiamen and the warmer weather. My friends advised !e to head south and I'm glad I headed their advice. I had arrived in Xiamen the previous evening and was so happy that the weather wasn't cold. I woke up to an overcast but warm day and after enjoying breakfast al fresco in the hostel's courtyard, I set off to explore. My map ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lower Silesian » Wroclaw January 6th 2018

After having a leisurely breakfast, I headed out into Wroclaw once again. Since I had seen pretty much everything I wanted to I had thought that my day might be a bit aimless. So I decided to do a Dwarf Hunt. A famous tourist attraction that has sprung up over the years is the Wroclaw Dwarves. I had seen a few of them on my wanders around the city, but decided that I would pay them a bit more attention today. I had bought a map at the tourist information office which has the location of 100 of the dwarves on it and their names in Polish and English. Although there are now many more dwarves than those listed on the guide and new ones are popping up all the time. I decided to head back ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lower Silesian » Wroclaw January 5th 2018

The hostel provided a free breakfast, which I helped myself to. When reading reviews of the place online, I loved how some people were moaning about how basic the breakfast was. It's a hostel, it is cheap, be thankful you are getting free food at all people. Tea, toast and cereal filled me up nicely and set off to explore some more of Wroclaw. I had decided to head over to Cathedral Island and explore some of the surrounding midtown section of the city. I headed up through the Old Town, near the Town Hall, but up a different street that I hadn't explored the previous day. Once again, the style of the buildings reminded me a lot of those I had seen in South East Germany. I saw the former St. Joseph boarding school, which ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lower Silesian » Wroclaw January 4th 2018

An early morning flight had me in Poland before lunchtime. It had been a long time since I had flown Ryanair. It was fine, cramped but fine. I noticed that some of the rows were lacking windows, I don't think I would like to be in one of those seats. I took the city bus 106 into the city. The journey took about 30-40 minutes. On the bus, I watched the scenery go by. It wasn't anything spectacular, but I liked looking at it. It's been a long time since I have travelled in mainland Europe and I was excited to be visiting a new country and taking in all the details. From the bus stop, it was about a 5-10 minute walk to my hostel. I was in luck as the room was ready and ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Abu Dhabi December 26th 2017

I had booked a day trip to Abu Dhabi as I wanted to visit another Emirate. I hadn't been too impressed when making my booking that they charged more for a single booking, feels a bit shady that they want to discriminate against solo travellers. Also when they sent the instructions to get to the departure point, it was bloody miles away. Also the instructions were only suitable for those driving or taking a cab, not great those of us that use public transport. Anyway, I figured out a route and took the subway. Once I exited the station, I used the maps on my phone to locate the hotel. Well that was a big mistake as it had the location in the wrong place and I ended up walking along the wrong side of the ... read more
