29th Sept: Well, a three hour flight delay meant I arrived in Beijing quite a bit later than I had intended. It didn't take me too longto get to my hostel by subway and after getting slightly lost, I managed to find it. I had stayed in this hostel 12 years ago when I first visited China, so it was a nice trip down memory lane. The hostel and the neighbourhood hadn't changed too much. After some umming and ahhing, I decided to stick to my original plan for the day, which was to visit Beihai Park. It took me about half an hour to walk to the park from where I was staying and the sun was already starting to dip as I headed on my way. The park's entrance fee was 30 RMB and ... read more

I woke up pretty early, but after having had a very early start yesterday, I lazed in bed for a while longer not wanting to move. Eventually, I got up and we headed out. Our first stop of the day was breakfast. After returning our key card and being given some bottles of iced tea and breakfast recommendations from the hotel reception staff we were on our way. We passed by the first place they recommended and decided to see what the other places looked like. Pretty much as soon as we saw the second place, we decided to go in. Dumplings for breakfast! Definitely one of my favourite meals. The restaurant was pretty busy inside, lots of people enjoying a late breakfast or early lunch. We ordered at the counter, the menu on the wall ... read more

We arrived in Suzhou at lunchtime and headed to the main downtown area to find some lunch. We had looked up some of Suzhou's famous food online and headed to a place that served sour vegetable fish soup. My friend said it was a Suzhou dish, but after doing my own research it appears to be a Sichuan dish. Why does all the best food in China originate from Sichuan? I don't know if my friend meant that the restaurant we were going to was a famous restaurant in Suzhou (I saw several posts advertising the place around Suzhou) or whether the other soup, a tomato based one, that the restaurant offers was a traditional Suzhou dish. We ordered the soup and some shrimp tempura to snack on while we waiting for the soup. The meals ... read more

Asia » China » Zhejiang » Ningbo May 29th 2018

We took the bus from Ningbo train station (988) to Fenghua. The bus driver was totally mental and drove like a maniac, which is unusual as most bus drivers are pretty good. He stopped in the middle of the road to use his phone at one point and then sailed past one of the bus stops, coming to an abrupt halt a hundred metres or so past the stop. The bus journey took about an hour and we definitely passed some of the grittier and grimier parts of Ningbo. We got off the bus in Xikou, a small town. My friend had went to high school in this town and had visited the scenic area back then so she recommended this place to us to visit. Fenghua is famous for beef noodles, and since we had ... read more

I was up very early, so that I could head to Lamma Island for the day. I was really looking forward to exploring the island as everything I had read online and friends' experiences were all very positive. I stopped off at McDonalds for breakfast and a coffee. There were quite a few homeless looking people making use of the place to have a nap as it was a really big store and pretty quiet. Then I headed over to the Star Ferry pier and took the ferry across to Central. From there I headed to the depaarture dock for Lamma Island. The ferries run to two different ports on Lamma Island: Sok Kwu Wan and Yung Shue Wan. Most of the stuff I read about doing the Family Trail across the island, the people had ... read more

I had decided to do another free tour today. This one was For Hong Kong Island and I thought it would be a good contrast to the Kowloon Tour that we had done at the weekend. I headed over to Admiralty and met up with the tour guide. At first, I was the only one there, and I almost had a private tour, but a couple more people turned up and off we set. We headed over to Tamar Park first, this was just a short walk away. I had been to the park the day before, but we had mainly walked along the waterfront and I got to explore more of the park now. We had walked through the big 'open door' of the Government HQ building, which was completed in 2011. The building looked ... read more

We woke feeling a little delicate after our night out in Lan Kwai Fong. We had an appointment booked for twelve, so there would be no lounging in before us. My friend was definitely suffering more than I was. When I suggested breakfast, she went green. It was boiling hot when we stepped outside, not good for our hungover, dehydrated bodies. We stopped at the convenience store, so I could get some good and coffee into my system and my friend could stock up on water. We took the subway to Central, where we met the photographer, we had arranged to meet. My friend had found this thing online, where quite a few Korean expats have set up side gigs as photographers and take you to all the famous and/or secret spots to get good shots. ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon April 7th 2018

We decided to take it a bit easier today and tried to sleep in a little later. I don't think it really worked as we were still out the door before 11 am. The place that I really wanted to have breakfast at didn't open until 11:30, too late for us to wait that long, so we went to another place just a couple of doors along from our guesthouse. The place was called Hunghom Cafe. Since it was a Saturday morning, the place was heaving and I wondered if we would be able to get a seat. However, once we were inside, I saw that the restaurant was a lot bigger than it looked from the outside. We were shown to a table and had a look at the menu. We both opted for the ... read more

First stop of the day was breakfast. There was a really cute cafe a few doors along from our guesthouse that did avocado toast and grilled cheese sandwiches, which I really wanted to check out. My friend readily agreed to this and we headed there, well the first time we walked straight past it, that wasn't a good sign, we retraced out steps and found the place was shut. Bugger, there goes that option. We took a walk along the streets near where we were staying and soon found a place open for breakfast. We headed into Kai Lee Noodles, the place was totally old school and I took this as a sign it was a good place. It wasn't very busy and we were shown to a table and given menus to peruse. We settled ... read more

A pretty short, but at times quite turbulent, flight had me arriving in Hong Kong around lunchtime. I was gutted to see that they no longer stamp your passport at immigration. I love collecting passport stamps. The atm as soon as you exit the baggage collection area was great, as it meant I didn't have to faff on looking for somewhere to get some money. A quick purchase from Seven Eleven meant that I had the correct change for the bus. There was a bus already there, but it looked pretty full and the line was still quite long, so I decided to wait for the next one. The journey took about an hour and deposited me on Nathan Road. After getting a little lost, the map on my phone had the guesthouse's location wrong, I ... read more
