A very long day! I was up not long after 5 am to get ready for our day trip to Hakone. Since my flight was leaving at around 2 am, I had decided just to take my stuff with me as we would be going to Hakone via Shinjuku and it would be too much effort to return to the Asakusa area to collect my bag. I'm glad I was only traveling with hand luggage. It was pretty cold as I walked down to Ueno station. The streets were really quiet. I met my friend at Ueno station and we took the train to Shinjuku. Shinjuku station was busy as always. We headed to the ticket office and bought the Hakone Freepass, this covered all our transport for the trip, so we didn't have to worry ... read more

Merry Christmas to me! Since it was Christmas, I decided to have a leisurely morning. I decided not to set my alarm and wake up when I was ready. I chilled at the hostel, taking my time to get ready, chilling over breakfast and chatting to the other guests and staff. Eventually, I was ready and since I'd only had a small breakfast, ready for some lunch. I love sushi, so that would be my Christmas Dinner in 2016, it hands down beats the Taco Bell I had at Incheon airport last year. I had learnt that one of the 100 yen conveyor belt sushi chains had opened a branch in the shopping arcade in Asakusa, near the temple. I had been warned that they had very little for 100 yen (well, 108 with the tax), ... read more

Back in Tokyo! My flight had arrived the previous evening, so I had just made my way to the hostel I was staying at, got some dinner from the convenience store and relaxed in preparation for a busy few days. My friend came to meet me at the hostel and we set off to go to this Michelin starred ramen place that I wanted to try. I forget the name now, but it had only recently got a Michelin star and was ridiculously cheap. We walked to the station and had a good catch up as it had been about six months since we had last seen each other. We got on the subway and my friend had a thought, we should check that the restaurant is open. That turned out to be a good idea ... read more

15th Dec: I left Korea about six months before and had done so much since leaving, but I was missing it. Korea was the place I called home for many years, so when I found out I was off from mid December, I planned a return trip. I was looking forward to seeing familiar faces, being able to read what is around and understand (to some extent) what people are saying to me. Also the food, I was really missing the food. There is a Korean place on my uni campus, but it is pretty crappy. My flight left Shanghai early afternoon and I got to Incheon around teatime. I took the subway into the city, which took a little while. I was staying in Gangnam and met my friend there as she'd booked my goshiwon for ... read more

I took the train to Shanghai around lunchtime. The train took about two hours and was comfortable. I alighted at Hongqiao station and took the subway a couple of stops to my hostel. I had picked this hostel as it was one of the cheapest I could find and was close to the subway. It was about a five minute walk from the subway. I got checked in and headed up to my room to drop off my bag. The hostel was a little weird as the ground floor was the hostel entrance and reception area, and then the next floor was some random business and then up to the next floor was the hostel. I was in an 8 bed or 10 bed dorm, there were already quite a few people chilling in there. I ... read more

27th Oct: I arrived in Hangzhou in the afternoon and took the subway to my hostel. The hostel is in a great location, just off the major shopping street. At the junction leading to my hostel, there was a stall selling stinky tofu. Oh boy, it stank so bad. It reminded me of being in Suzhou and having the smell cling to my clothes. I spent a while wandering around Hefang Street. It is old school Chinese and filled with shops and little stalls in the middle of the street. There were lots of things to buy. It was a shopper's paradise. I liked the old buildings. It is a really pretty area, but there were about a million people about as Hangzhou is a very popular place with domestic tourists. I also took a wander ... read more

8th Oct: Since we had the whole day ahead of us, we decided to head in a different direction to yesterday. Instead of going to the main area, which has all the gardens in it, we took the subway in a different direction, near to where the Tiger Hill Scenic Spot is. Looking on the map, we figured out that we could walk there via Shantang Street, which is another walking street, similar to the street we had been on the day before. I had expected this street to be more like the one we had visited, however it surprised me as it was quite different. While the street yesterday was definitely geared towards tourists, this one was more for the locals. The shops sold normal everyday things and we able to get some fruits and ... read more

We had arrived in Suzhou quite late the previous evening, so had only had a short walk out to find some dinner. Today we were ready to explore. We headed towards the main shopping area, nearish to where we were staying in search of some breakfast. We found a place selling coffee and juices so got some of them. We didn't find any food, but did come across a nice looking temple. The Xuan Miao Temple was built in 276 AD, but had a different name, Zhen Qing Taosist Temple, back then. The temple changed names pretty frequently, normally when a new dynasty took over ruling China. The temple was quite big, as there were buildings connected to it, that were not joined to it, so we got to explore those too. I love all the ... read more

Asia » China » Zhejiang » Ningbo September 25th 2016

We left Ningbo early in the morning, around 8 if I remember correctly. The drive took a couple of hours. At first it was interesting as I got to see parts of my new city that I hadn't seen before, but after a while I became bored. This was due to the bus driver not really having a clue where he was going, which meant we took a few wrong turns and had to double back on ourselves. This was hard on some of the small and windy country roads that we encountered. One highlight though was passing a bus of people all done up for a wedding. They were all dressed in lots of red and looked beautiful. Me and my friend were looking at them and wondering and they were doing the same to ... read more

Dongqian Lake is one of the main tourist spots in Ningbo, so we hopped in a taxi and headed there. Since the lake is massive and we didn't know which part we wanted to be at a quick phone call to someone gave us a location to show the taxi driver. The journey took about twenty minutes. The taxi dropped us at the start of a smaller road and we walked down it. There we found a ticket booth and paid the entrance fee to Tao Gong Island. I can't remember how much it was now. The God of Wealth, Fan Li, and Venus, Xi Shi, lived on Tao Gong Island several thousand years ago, or so the story goes. We consulted the map and it seemed that there were a few things to do on ... read more
