So I finally left Paris for a weekend! My friend Mandy had her friend, Daniel, visiting from Canada and the three of us decided to go to Madrid for the weekend. It was really nice to get out of Paris for a bit. I was shocked, however, at how polluted Madrid was. I felt that I could taste the pollution in the air. After that, and coming back to Paris, I am really starting to miss the clean BC air. The first day in Madrid we didn’t get out to the city until the evening. When we did get downtown, we walked down Gran Via street and saw some great things. Then we went for tapas dinner and decided to catch a movie. We decided to go see Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Wow, what a great movie. ... read more

Hello hello I hope that everyone back home is doing well. I have mentioned before that I am working at UNESCO, but I have not really gone into detail some of the things that I am doing. I was originally hired to edit documents that had been written in French and translated into English. However, I am doing so much more than that. My first ‘assignment’ was to edit a document regarding marginalized adolescent girls and how to help them in trying to eradicate violence against women. In addition, I was asked for my opinion and recommendations. My recommendations were taken with enthusiasm. I am currently creating a dossier of information on what has been accomplished or started in the field of violence against women within the UN framework. Based on the information in this dossier ... read more

I thought that I would post some pictures of my apartment in case anyone was wondering what it looked like. I will preface that I feel that my apartment is not the norm, especially for students in Paris. I have a quite large and new apartment. I definitely had a horse shoe up my butt when I found this place. I am very grateful for it, and my wonderful roommate. I also decided to throw up some pictures of random furniture that I have seen in furniture stores. I went furniture shopping with Alain one day and we saw some very interesting things. I have to admit, that I was very entertained by the different fashions. Having said that, the predominant fashion in furniture here is the minimalist, almost boxy type furniture that is fashionable, but ... read more

Wow, it has been a very long time since I have wrote something. First off, I will talk a little about UNESCO. I am officially an intern. I signed my contract and got my security clearance badge. The organization is interesting and I am really enjoying the experience. Sadly, I am coming to the conclusion that I doubt I will get employment out of it, but I am very thankful to have an insider’s view of an international organizational such as the UN. The way things work entertain me. Some days I go into the office and there is nothing for me to do, so I find articles to research and learn about the topics. Then other days, I am asked to do something and can I have it done yesterday. I am adapting and find ... read more

This Sunday will mark one month in Paris - wow, a month already. I have really enjoyed learning random facts about Paris. For instance, it is illegal for a business in Paris to be open seven days a week. If a business wants to be open on Sunday it has to have a special permit and be closed on another day of the week. If a company is open on a Sunday without the proper permit, it will be fined. I find this very interesting. So, the big news of the day…I got an internship with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Unfortunately, the internship is not paid and there is a very slim chance that I will actually get a job in the future, but I will be learning so much. The organization ... read more

I have now been in Paris for three weeks. Things are going really good. I am starting to make friends and really enjoying the Paris culture. I am also learning quite a bit about the small things in Paris. For instance, medical stops. My roommate works for Air France as a crisis specialist. Basically, he helps people who have missed their connections or have some type of issue. The other night, there was a client who became very irate when he missed his connection and swung and the female teller. Thierry was right there and stopped the punch with his hand. As it turned out, the man spent the next couple of days in jail, and Thierry had fractured his hand. The doctor prescribed him to a five day medical stop. What this means is that ... read more

The first few pictures in the blog are from Lac Daumesnil in Bois de Vincennes. I looked on my map and found the biggest green space that I could find. This is only a small portion of the space, but it is really pretty. The entire park covers 210 hectares. One of the things that I liked about the lake was all of the people that were jogging. I have found that in many of the green spaces people are very active. Had I not brought my great big jacket with my, I may have explored more, but I just wasn’t prepared. Ahh, one of the perks of living here, I can always go back for more! The rest of the pictures were taken yesterday. The first portion of my day I decided to spend finding ... read more

I discovered that the on first Sunday of every month, the Louvre is free. Considering I found this out, three days before the first Sunday of October, and I wanted to visit the Louvre, I felt it only obligatory that I attend this Sunday. I decided to get up early and spend the entire day there. I packed a lunch, had my camera, good runners and I was ready to go. I was happy that I arrived early because there was virtually no line at the security check. After that, considering everything was free, line ups were pretty much done for that day…unless you wanted to go to the café, but I brought my lunch. During my research on the hours and admissions of the Louvre, I also discovered that I could rent a recording devise ... read more

I have arrived in Paris, France, safe and sound. I am going to be here for 6 months, give or take an excursion. I am looking forward to starting school and meeting some new people. I am attending INSEEC, School of Business and finishing up my European Masters in Business (EMBA). Hopefully, once I am finished this, when I return to Vancouver I can find a job that will satisfy my career and financial goals. What can I say about Paris? It is definitely an amazingly beautiful city. When I arrived in Paris, after traveling for 18 hours, I had little time to spare. My best friend, Camille and her husband had been in the city for two days prior and were waiting for me to meet up with them to tour around. Fortunately for me, ... read more

Oh Canada! Our home and native land! What a great feeling to be back on home soil. It is amazing to go away to so many different countries and be put in a situation where you are basically lost all the time, and end here in Canada. We had some scavenges to do here and when we went to the subway station, you never had to ask people for help. You could just look confused and someone would come up and ask if you needed help. Once again, we waited for the scavenge list to figure out where we were going to go for lunch. We decided to head to this little French pastry place that was really great. We took the subway, but still ended up walking about 3 km from the station to ... read more
