Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome January 22nd 2011

After a mostly sleepless flight, I arrived in Rome around 8:00AM to grey skies and clouds and rain. Did it matter? Nooo.... I was in Rome! I dreamed of coming to Italy for years and I was finally here! I was staying in Orsa Maggiore Women's Only Hostel in the Trastevere area of Rome. I had directions of how to get their via train, bus, and my own legs, but both of my backpacks were heavy and it was raining, so I got a shuttle for 30 euros from an orange desk in the airport. It was legitimate, and honestly, only about 15 euros more than I would have paid if I had taken the train and bus. So Max took me and two other people to our hotels in his nice car, and I headed ... read more

I arrived in Patmos at 11:00 at night and the owner of my hotel, Villa Knossos, met me at the harbour and we drove to the hotel. And guess what? Yep. I had another studio apartment all to myself! It was beautiful! I paid 30 euros a night for this luxury and it was totally worth it. There was even some tea and coffee and water and a coke waiting for me. The teacher next door had rented his studio for the winter while he was teaching and he had adopted a cat who came to visit me every day and I broke down and let him come in, even though I wasn't supposed to. I made him stay in my lap and he had no problem with that. I really wanted to take him with ... read more

I took the ferry to Symi this morning and arrived before lunch. I had made a reservation at Dorian Hotel on some obscure website and I had a feeling the hotel had no idea I was coming. I was right, but it didn't matter. Dorian Hotel is to the right of the harbour when you step off the boat, not far from the clock tower and just behind Hotel Aliki, which looked very nice but too expensive for me. But for 30 euros a night at Dorian Hotel, I got a lovely bathroom, small fully equipped kitchen and seating area, small balcony, and the bedroom was upstairs and was very spacious with lovely hardwood floors. I was in heaven! I had some tea and then decided to get some lunch and wander around the island. I ... read more

I'm not going to write day-by-day as I usually do. I'll just write about each island I visited. Some of my readers have messaged me to ask how life in Turkey is going. I'll write more about that later, but for now I'll just say that things are going fine, but slow, and I needed a few days away from the small town of Selcuk where I live. So, I decided to visit a few of the Dodecanese Islands. Right now it is considered low season, end of season, whatever you want to call it. I figured I shouldn't wait until November because there are even fewer ferries between islands in November than there are now, so on 19 October I caught a bus to Marmaris, Turkey where I would catch the ferry to Rhodos the ... read more

Well, I've been here a week now and in one more week I will be the proud owner of a 2 year residence permit. I am almost afraid to say it, but it was easy. Partly because I am American and partly because I had a lot of cash in my bank account. I think. I looked on the Internet at multiple websites trying to find out what I needed to do first to get my permit. I found a lot of information, but nothing that told me step-by-step what I needed to do. So I am going to write it here in hopes that it will help someone else. First, get a cell phone. I didn't and I had to put my friend's phone number on everything instead of mine. Not a bad thing, but ... read more

Today I go back to Shanghai. I slept in a bit, then went to Summit Cafe for my usual coffee and cinnamon roll. I fly back to Shanghai at 3:40. I just met a girl from Kentucky in the cafe! What a small world! She and her husband have been teaching in China and are now going back home to return to school. Some reflections on Tibet: I won't get too political here because I know that is not what travelblog.org is about, and I've only experienced a small part of Tibet so I am certainly no expert. But, that said, much of what I've seen leaves me sad and confused. I wish I could have come here 15 years ago, or even 20, when I think it was still Tibet. There is a definite Chinese ... read more

I wasn't meeting Pussang until 10:00, so I told him to pick me up at Summit Cafe. Of course, he was early and I wasn't finished with my cinnamon roll and coffee. We chatted for a while, then went to visit two monasteries here in Lhasa. They were small, but busy. One has about 25 monks in residence, the other I don't remember. They were both free to enter, but of course, I could not enter without a guide lest I try to stir up trouble among the monks by spouting off about my liberal views on freedom and basic human rights. So Pussang explained what the icons stood for and patiently answered my questions. I looked around at all of the money stuffed into every nook and cranny and watched people pour copious amounts of ... read more

We began our drive back to Lhasa at 8:30, a half hour earlier than planned. I knew Pussang would be in the lobby early. The route back didn't detour around the lake and did take about 5 hours, but the scenery was no less stunning than yesterday. We stopped a couple of times to take photos, but skipped lunch. At one point we got out of the van and were greeted in perfect English by a Tibetian boy about 4 years old. 'Hello, welcome to Tibet! You are very nice. Please join us for something to eat!' Wow! Where did he learn that? When we got out of the van, his eyes went right to my white legs and he wrapped his arms around them and wouldn't stop touching me until his mom yelled at him! ... read more

I came downstairs at 8:15 for my 8:30 meeting with Pussang, only to find he and Kate were already there and the driver was waiting! I was starting to realize that Pussang is often early. So we started off on what I thought was a five hour trip to Shigatse with a stop at the Yamdrok Tso Lake on the way. Turns out, we didn't arrive until after 3:00 in Shigatse. The drive displayed some of the most beautiful scenery and stark landscapes I have ever seen. We stopped for a few photo opps along the way, and the lake was an amazing shade of blue on one end and green on the other. I had high hopes for Shigatse after seeing this. We stopped at a village that pretty much existed to feed tour groups, ... read more

So I met Pussang at 9:00 in my hotel lobby and we were driven to Jokhang Temple first. It was about 2km from my hotel, but I was surprised to see the driver. I thought we would just walk. When I said so, Pussang seemed surprised. He said most Americans didn't like to walk anywhere and always wanted the driver at their disposal. Hee hee. I asked him if most of the Americans he took on tours were bigger than me and he said, 'Oh yes' and I'm not small, I know. So I told him I like to walk and that if he wanted, he could tell the driver to go home for the day. He did, and we walked a lot today.
