Christmas Day. Spent in the car. Almost all day. But it couldn't be avoided. We had 16 days in India and making the most of it meant being in the car on Christmas Day. But we didn't see any dead animals. Or people. So that's positive. We had breakfast at Cafe Edelweiss and were on the road by 9AM. We didn't see Hardev yesterday, so it was good to see him again this morning. We were on our way to Jaipur and it was a long drive, but we stopped at Chittorgarh, Rajasthan's largest fort (100Rs) on the way there. We felt like we had seen enough forts, honestly, but Hardev said it was the biggest and we knew he wanted us to feel like we got the most out of our trip, so stopped without ... read more

The first thing I did this morning was check my email. I am now a homeowner. My friend signed the closing documents for me yesterday and I am now the proud owner of a super fabulous little house in Tucson, Arizona. This trip is exciting and great and amazing, but I am way more excited about my house than I am about this trip. I am very weary of all the people and pollution and rubbish in the streets of India. But, I am still in India, so on with the show! After a celebratory breakfast across the street at Cafe Edelweiss, which was excellent and cheap, we went back to the room for a while and took care of some things as we were in no particular hurry today, and then we ventured off to ... read more

Unfortunately I couldn't eat breakfast this morning. I had a rather urgent case of the trots. But no Delhi Belly! I think all this Indian food has finally caught up with me. I was a little worried, but once we got on the road I was fine. Our first stop was Via Bishnoi Craft Village. It was a big building full of gorgeous textiles. Oh dear. We are in trouble. We stayed for over an hour looking and shopping and buying. I bought some beautiful things from Babu and so did Annette. We made him a very happy man. And I will never forget him. He was a skinny little Indian man with a big tuft of hair growing out of each ear. Those tufts of hair were truly astounding and I will never, ever forget ... read more

This morning started with me fixing the toilet. The tank didn't refill last night, so this morning I decided to turn on the water and see what happened. The tank filled. The fixture leaked significantly, but since I was taking a shower and there were no doors on the shower anyway (almost all showers are like this in India) I figured a leaky fixture didn't really matter. I'd rather have a toilet that flushes. But that's the only problem in this hotel. They delivered coffee to our room this morning and we took two bottles of water and they didn't charge us for any of it. I know they wanted a good review on airbnb.com, but even if they charged us, I would've given them a good review. Hotel Jeet Villa is inexpensive and good! And ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaisalmer December 21st 2011

We started our morning at Krishna Guesthouse with a breakfast of four pieces of white toast, one chapatee, butter, lovely jam, and coffee that I could not drink due to some spices in it. Just a matter of taste though, not bad coffee. I wasn't impressed with breakfast, but overall, our stay at Krishna was good and a good price I think for all that was included (2400Rs for two people). After breakfast we packed up and drove the 40km to Jaisalmer. Hardev suggested we use a guide and given the size of the old city, we agreed. It is the best way to cover a lot of ground in a day. He introduced us to Padem and he seemed knowledgeable and spoke excellent English, so we hired him for the day not knowing how much ... read more

I dreaded today's long drive to Khuri Village, near Jaisalmer, but the road was actually really good and we didn't see any dead camels. We did, however, see a lot of live animals on the road- goats, sheep, cows, a deer, and camels, of course. Who knew India had so many camels? Rajasthan certainly does. And on the road there are very few cars, but a lot of big trucks transporting just about anything you can imagine. And we saw a lot of people just standing around, young men mostly. Standing around in villages, at intersections, in the middle of nowhere. Just waiting. For what? Work? A bus? Life? It's sad. But many countries I have visited have young men standing around doing nothing - Vietnam, Cambodia, Jordan, Turkey especially. So many people with no work. ... read more

What a day this turned out to be. Before I write about today, in order for this entry to make a bit more of an impact on you, I will tell you something about me that few people know. I have a 'thing' about going barefoot in places where a lot of people may have gone barefoot before me. I rarely shower barefoot in hotels and hostels, no matter how clean they appear, and I often won't even go barefoot in the room. I can handle walking barefoot on the beach, or even in the forest or people's yards. Regular dirt doesn't bother me. But in certain situations and places, I just have a 'thing' about going barefoot. Now you know. On to Bikaner. After washing my hair by pouring water over my head from a ... read more

Second day in India and we are feeling good. Quite happy to leave Hotel Ashiana, but we knew we still had a day left in Delhi at the end of our trip to see more sights and go shopping, so we were ready to hit the road to Mandawa. It was going to be a long drive and Annette and I didn't have breakfast or more importantly, coffee! On the way out of Delhi, we told Hardev we wanted coffee after we passed a Costa Coffee and Coffee Day Cafe, India's impressive version of a western cafe, at Connaught Place. We're not sure what he didn't understand, but he didn't stop. For a long time. We would soon learn that once we were on the road with Hardev, we didn't stop until we hit a Midway ... read more

I have wanted to go to India for about six years. Since I started teaching overseas and realized it was possible for me to get there. So when I moved back to Kuwait last August, I knew I wanted to go to India for my Christmas holiday. I really didn't want to go alone, for many reasons, even though I've visited many countries by myself. But I wanted to share India with someone. I wanted someone to eat with and walk with and comment on the sites with. I also wanted someone to deflect some of the attention away from me. I admit it. Lucky for me, my friend Annette who teaches in Hong Kong agreed to meet me there. We had an amazing trip, a sightseeing bonanza of a trip, a fantabulous food trip, and ... read more

I went to Turkey to live there. For a long time. Maybe even a lifetime. And that didn't work out. I'm back in Kuwait now, teaching English at a university. But some people have asked me to write about my life in Selçuk, near Izmir and Kusadasi on the Aegean Sea, even though it wasn't technically a holiday. But, I wasn't working, so it sort of ended up being a holiday after all. Originally I wanted to open a business there with my then boyfriend, who is a carpet dealer working for his pony-tailed brother in Selcuk, but after a few months, I figured out that wasn't at all what I wanted. So in December I decided to go back to teaching internationally and started looking for jobs, knowing that a couple more years of teaching ... read more
