Up at 5AM to make the 45 min trek up to Poon Hill. In the past, I have been so disappointed by anything that required me to get up so early. I have yet to see a sight that was truly worth getting up this early. It had poured rain the day before, but the weather was clear this morning. I wasn't really sure what we were supposed to see from Poon Hill. I thought we were supposed to watch the sunrise, and while we started out in the dark, the sun soon rose and we were only 15 min into a crowded 45 min trek. I struggled with the uphill in the beginning. A lot. And I was secretly wishing I'd just stayed in bed a while longer. I soon understood why so many people ... read more

The pictures in this entry are actually from Day 1 to Tikhedhunga. Got my days mixed up. Pictures from Day 2 are in the last entry titled Day 1 Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. Woke up at 6AM again and had our usual - muesli and hard boiled eggs. But once we saw what Nabin and Madhur were having, we decided to have that tomorrow! It was spicy curried potatoes and beans with this gorgeous bread. Will definitely have that tomorrow! We started walking at 7:30. We'd already been warned about the steep uphill for the first 2 hours or so of our trek today. What we didn't realize is that we would actually be going uphill all day! Just not as steep as the beginning. Lucky for us it was perfect trekking weather again and the ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Annapurna » Annapurna Circuit April 2nd 2012

Time for some trekking! Well, after some breakfast and some driving. Woke up at 6AM after a terrible night's sleep. Dog barking. Super hard bed. Hard pillow. Had a nice breakfast of hard boiled eggs and muesli and yogurt (called curd in Nepal). Perfect breakfast before a 4 hour trek on the Annapurna Circuit. A short circuit. There is a big circuit that takes over 2 weeks to complete. We were doing a short one that takes just 4-5 days to complete. We piled in the tiny taxi, the five of us, and first went to the village of Naya Pul where our trek would begin. After a trip to the toilet, we were on our way. We were trekking as far as Tikhedhunga today, just a 4 hour walk. In Naya Pul we got our ... read more

Morning flight over the Himalayas today. Woke up at 5:30, completely oblivious that we were supposed to meet Ravi in the lobby at 5:45. He told us. More than once. But we apparently had a major brain fart and totally forgot what Ravi had said even though I heard him clearly and repeated it. At 5:55 when Ravi called our room to tell us it was getting late, I realized that Nabin's English was not as good as we thought. The night before when he dropped us at the hotel he said six fifteen, but what he meant was fifteen to six. Big difference. So after Ravi called we rushed downstairs not realizing that we didn't need to bring all our stuff because we'd be returning after the mountain flight. So we threw everything in the ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Bhaktapur » Durbar Square March 31st 2012

Last summer a friend asked me if I'd be interested in going to Nepal. 'Of course,' I said. Who wouldn't be interested in going to Nepal? So we planned this trip for April and I have finally arrived! I arrived last night after an uneventful flight. I waited in line for almost an hour to get my visa (25USD). Ravi, my tour organizer, met me at the airport with quite an entourage - himself, a driver, and my guide, Nabin. (www.adventurediscoverytreks.com) Only I didn't know Nabin was going to be my guide. I was taken directly to my hotel which was in the tourist area of Kathmandu called Thamel. I saw a lot of stuff I'd like have while looking through the window of that car. I think my hotel was called Hotel Buddha. It was ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » Delhi » Karol Bagh December 31st 2011

Truth be told, I was dreading today. We weren't leaving for the airport until 10:30PM, and in my mind, we had a lot of time to kill. We had a fabulous breakfast of omelets, paranthas, toast and jam and coffee and ended up staying at the B&B until noon because we had so much time to kill. Afterwards we took a rickshaw to the metro and took the metro into Delhi. It was clean and efficient and not the least bit crowded. I was impressed. Our first stop was Jantar Mantar, the observatory built in the 1700's. It has a huge sundial other huge, nifty gadgets used to tell time and the location of objects in the sky. Annette ran into a little old man who worked there for 40 years and now he offered tours ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi December 30th 2011

We were up at 7AM ready to tackly Varanasi's Old City. Or so we thought. We took an auto rickshaw from our hotel to the Old City for 100Rs. I think it should cost more like 50Rs, but we didn't really care. One dollar each? Okay, I'm not going to haggle over 50 cents. When we got dropped off in the Old City, we didn't really know where to go. We wanted to have breakfast at Brown Bread Bakery which is recommended in Lonely Planet. One young man showed us the way through the small alleys and when we arrived, he didn't want money but begged us to come to his father's shop. But there was a serious flaw in his plan. He didn't tell us the name of it and we had no idea where ... read more

Walking Down to the Ghats

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi December 27th 2011

Unfortunately, I don't mean the title of this entry in a good way. But I am glad Annette and I made the effort to go to Varanasi and see the ghats (stairs) and a bit of the city. A bit was enough though. We stayed two nights here. One is probably enough if you arrive early enough in the day for a walk along the ghats. There's really not another reason to come to Varanas(t)i unless you're shopping for silk. It is supposedly silk central of India, but I don't know if I believe that. This morning in Agra Annette and I got a coffee at Cafe Coffee Day, which was quite a challenge even though we were the only two people in there, and then we were on the road with Hersh by 7:20AM. We ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra December 27th 2011

Our new driver's name was Hersh and we were a bit worried about communicating with him as his English was not so great. But he understood us and we understood him if we stuck to the bare minimum. He picked us up at 8:00AM after we'd settled our hotel bill. The beer and wine weren't on the bill and we almost forgot about it, but the guys at the desk called the man who had bought it for us and we left the money for him as well as a tip, so I hope it got to the right person. Hersh was right on time and we were on the road to Agra, non-stop. There is one site to see between Jaipur and Agra, but because we only had this evening to see the Taj, we ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaipur » Chomu December 26th 2011

Okay, I have run out of clever adjectives to use to describe India while mocking their 'Incredible India' campaign, so I'm just going to use regular titles now. You can tell by the title of this one what's going to happen today. Hardev called this morning to say that the car had a big problem, which doesn't surprise me given how many speed bumps he'd hit at full speed or how many times we'd gone off-roading to pass a traffic jam, which I was fine with. But that car had taken a beating and I was surprised it got us this far. So the company was sending a replacement from Delhi that would pick us up in the morning. In the meantime, we would use an Ambassador (older model British car) taxi and driver today, and ... read more
