We started the day with breakfast by the pool. The midnight buffet was positively small compared with the amount and variety of food on offer for breakfast! There was so much food to choose from it was hard to decide what to eat. And really, really hard not to eat too much!! This morning I settled for some fruit, a delicious pistachio nut-filled, honey-drizzled pastry and a small bowl of muesli with yoghurt. After breakfast we had a wander around the resort to familiarise ourselves with where everything thing is. With a better idea of how to find our way around, we returned to our room and changed into our swimwear, collected the iPad and the Kindle with our reading material on them and ventured down to the adult beach. That being 'adult' as in no ... read more

Another boring day traveling today. We re-packed our bags - not that there was much to re-pack - it was more a case of deciding to leave some warm and wet weather clothing and some Route 66 travel guides behind. We were picked up by mini-cab just before 1.00pm and dropped off at Terminal 2 by about 1.30pm. That was the quick bit!! Kath had checked us in on-line so first we waited in the queue to drop our bags off - well, we thought it was the bag drop queue!! It turned out we had walked straight past the bag drop counters and we were actually in the check-in line. D'oh! Fortunately we realised this before we got all the way to the head of the queue!!! We transferred over to the bag drop counters ... read more

Well ... we are settling into relaxation mode really quickly!! We had another lazy morning before going for a drive to Werneth Low Country Park with Kath and Albert. The park includes a cenotaph that commemorates the men and women of Hyde who lost their lives in the first and second World Wars. The cenotaph sit high atop the bluff with panoramic views over the City of Greater Manchester. The sun was breaking through patchy clouds, but with a really stiff breeze blowing it was pretty brisk up at the park. It was good kite-flying weather though, with a couple of colourful kites being flown. Why is it called Werneth Low anyway when it is so high above Manchester and its surrounds? I must check a map ... I guess there must be a High Werneth ... read more

OK, technically it was still late on Thursday when we re-boarded QF9 for the Singapore to London leg, but it seems as good a place as any to start Friday's entry! This leg was fully booked so there was no longer a spare seat in our row. In fact, as far as we could tell, there didn't seem to be a spare seat anywhere on the plane. It really is a long haul from Singapore to London!! I can't remember the last time we actually flew from one of the Asian hubs to London. Maybe never, because we have tended to fly to Manchester via Frankfurt on earlier trips. And then there are the trips where we have explored Norway or visited Mont St Michel and Paris or cycled from Brugge to Paris before going on ... read more

We began our holiday this morning with an early start so that we could take the dogs for a nice long walk before leaving home. Good for them and good for us since we are going to be cooped up an an aeroplane for about 24 hours! After our walk we had our breakfast, did some last minute cleaning and finished off our packing. All we really had left to pack was our toiletries after showering and cleaning our teeth. Our house sitter, Eddie, arrived just before 10.00am and we went out for another quick walk just to reassure ourselves (and Eddie) that he was going to be OK to manage the two dogs on his own. We introduced him to the correction chain for Finbar - just to help to remind him not to pull ... read more

And so to the last day of our short break! With a little bit of time to fill in this morning before our flight back to Melbourne this afternoon, we headed off to the Cairns Zoo. We watched the pelicans being fed before heading to the Free-flight Bird Show. As we waited for the show to start there was a short shower of rain. After five days of glorious weather it looked like taking a bit of a turn for the worse. Fortunately, just before show time, the rain stopped. The show included Australia’s largest raptor, the Wedge-tailed Eagle and the White-bellied Sea Eagle that is common in Northern Australia. We also saw a Barn Owl, some cockatoos and a very clever magpie. With our cameras on motor-drive Bernie even managed to take a reasonable shot ... read more

We decided to have a lazy day today to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary!! We hadn't booked any tours or excursions today so that we didn't have to make an early start to catch a boat or a train. After a lazy morning we went to the supermarket and purchased a few items to take out to Crystal Cascades for a picnic lunch. Crystal Cascades is a series of waterfalls and swimming hole in Freshwater Creek located a few kilometres out of Cairns. It's not really a tourist destination, more of a local secret and not all that easy to find. There was only one signpost along the way, but we eventually found ourselves at Crystal Cascades. We parked the car and were greeted by signs telling us to BEWARE STINGING TREE. Being wary of touching ... read more

This morning we headed off to ride the Kuranda Scenic Railway up to the small township of Kuranda. The railway line was built in the late 1800s to ensure an all weather supply route to settlements on the Atherton Tablelands, in particular the township of Herberton which was regularly left isolated during the wet season and its citizens left at risk of starving before the road became passable again. We drove the car to the car park for the Skyrail as we had booked to return via the Skyrail cable cars. We were collected by minibus from the car park and driven to the Freshwater Station on the Cairns to Kuranda railway line to catch the train. Jocelyn, the manager of our apartments, booked this tour for us over the weekend and convinced us to upgrade ... read more

Today we took the Falcon X6 for a drive up the coast to Cape Tribulation. On our way up the coast we stopped at Mossman Gorge. There were quite a few people there to swim in the river, but when we headed off on the 2.4km rainforest loop we had it almost to ourselves! The strangler figs in this part of the rainforest were quite impressive with a couple of particularly large specimens. From the gorge we continued on to the Daintree River and made the ferry crossing to continue up as far as we could drive without a four wheel drive vehicle. We stopped at the Daintree Discovery Centre cafe for a quick bite to eat before driving the rest of the way up the coast. We opted not to go into the discovery centre ... read more

Up early this morning because we needed to be at the Marina in Port Douglas in time to board the Silver Sonic for our reef trip. A beautiful morning for cruising the reef! The tour that we opted for was to the Agincourt Reef area on the outer edge of the reef near the continental shelf. As this is about 34 kms from Port Douglas we started the morning with a high speed trip out to the edge of the reef. The journey went quite quickly by the time we were given our safety briefing and kitted out with face masks, snorkels and flippers, not to mention the full body lycra suits!! The lycra suits cost us another $7.00 each to hire, but were highly recommended due to it being stinger season. The added bonus was ... read more
