The rooster that crowed all yesterday evening started up very early again this morning!! It woke me at about 5.00am unfortunately and I really didn't sleep again after than - just dozed a bit. With a few locks to get through today the Elodie actually sailed while we were eating breakfast. Sander is the deck hand as well as the chef and he did an excellent job assisting Zac through the locks and feeding us at the same time! After we had cleared two (or was it three?) locks, Zac moored the barge and we all disembarked quickly so that the Elodie could continue on her way. She had a lot more distance to cover today on the river than we had to cycle on the road. Today we crossed the border into France. If Nina ... read more

With the weather looking more promising today, we headed off on our bikes. Today we passed into the French speaking part of Belgium. Nina told us that if she speaks Dutch in Wallonia they will ignore her!! Although the weather was sunnier today, we had a very strong head wind ... all day!! It was a bit tiring riding all day into a head wind, but Nina seemed to know when we were flagging and scheduled well-spaced stops for coffee, lunch and so on. We made excellent time today arriving in Tournai by about 1.30pm with the five spires of the Notre Dame de Tournai creating a stunning silhouette on the horizon as we approached. We locked up our bikes by the Pont des Trous where the Elodie would be mooring and Nina walked us into ... read more

Overcast again this morning!! So, with wet weather gear on - just in case - we continued our ride upstream along the Schelde/Escaut to the south and southwest. Once we rode out of Ghent (and before we rode into Oudenaarde), today's ride was an easy one along towpaths and through more farmland, a few villages and the occasional piece of forest. We arrived in Oudenaarde, the capital of Flemish Ardennen, at about 2.30pm. We beat the Elodie into town again!! With an hour to kill before our brewery tour some of the group went to the tapestry museum situated on the canal and the rest of us rode into town. After meeting up with the Elodie and very quickly loading our bikes, we rushed over the footbridge over the canal for our 3.30pm tour of the ... read more

With the weather looking gloomy again this morning, we set off for Ghent. Nina assured us that we should not be deterred by the weather as, more often than not, it does not end up being as bad as it might look. Nina proved to be right and we enjoyed an overcast, but otherwise fine ride to Ghent along towpaths and through green pastures and picturesque villages. Until we reach Compiegne (next Monday), our route follows the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim's route. The only difficulty that we had today was a section of road construction that we had to walk our bikes along!! We arrived in Ghent by mid-afternoon and went for a short walk around the town before the Elodie arrived. After she docked we changed our shoes and walked back into the town centre ... read more

This morning the weather has taken a turn for the worse. It is a bit cooler than it has been for the last three days and a bit wet!! Not to be deterred by a bit of drizzle, we headed off to do a canal boat tour. We bought our tickets and just missed out on getting straight onto a boat. After waiting patiently for about 20 minutes with no-one else turning up, we were taken on a private canal boat tour!! A private tour is worth €207.00, but we only paid the standard price of €6.90 per ticket. How lucky is that?! Next we bought some Tia Maria that we tracked down in an 'English' bottle shop/tobacconist yesterday on our way to the Beguinage. Coffee liqueur has been really hard to find in Belgium!! After ... read more

This morning we managed to arrive at the Belfort by 9.20am. There was still a queue, but it wasn't as long as it was at 10.30am yesterday!!! Once the tower opened at 9.30am the queue started to move along reasonably steadily and before long we were climbing the 366 steps to see the bell in the Belfort. Because of the cramped conditions we didn't have to climb the 366 steps all at once - every so often we had to wedge ourselves into a corner to allow people on their way back down to get past! There were also some interesting rooms, for example the old treasury room, to explore at a couple of levels so the 366 steps didn't end up being as strenuous as might have been anticipated. At 83 metres tall, the Belfort ... read more

After a delicious breakfast served to us in our room overlooking the canal, we headed into the Markt planning to climb the Belfort (the bell tower featured in the movie 'In Bruges'). The Belfort opens at 9.30am so, by 10.30am when we arrived, there was quite a queue! Since we don't have to do this today we decided to try for an earlier start tomorrow morning and, hopefully, a shorter queue. From the Markt we ventured around to the Burg where the Basilica of the Holy Blood, a Roman Catholic minor basilica, is located. The upper chapel of the church houses the venerated relic of the Holy Blood. The upper chapel was rebuilt in the Gothic style during the 16th century and renovated a number of times during the 19th century in Gothic Revival style. It ... read more

After breakfast this morning, we arranged with our host to store our bags for the day. When we asked him about taking a taxi to the train station this afternoon, he suggested that it would be almost as easy to catch the Metro from the station at the end of the street to Central Station where the trains for Brugge depart. With this advice in mind, we decided to buy our Metro tickets this morning and use them to travel to Parc du Cinquantenaire. The ticket machine was easy enough to use, but it did not like our credit card and had no facility to take notes that we could see! That meant scraping together €9.00 in change - which we just managed - avoiding the need to go and buy something just to generate enough ... read more

This morning's breakfast was strictly 'Continental' - pain au raisin, pain au chocolat, croissants, bread rolls, sliced bread and cheese and jam. What a carb overload!! Fortunately there was a fruit bowl so we managed to eat something that wasn't bread or pastry!! Although a little bit cool today, it is mainly sunny and fine. We headed towards the Grand Place via the local open air food market in St Catherine Place. The Church of St Catherine was shrouded in scaffolding and cloth undergoing a major cleaning and restoration so we couldn't really see what it looks like ... apart from very big! Our next stop was The Bourse, the old Brussels Stock Exchange building, which is located on Boulevard Anspach. The Brussels Stock Exchange was founded in Brussels by Napoleonic decree in 1801. This building, ... read more

We slept well despite it being a very warm night and the hotel having no air conditioning!! Even though we power napped during the afternoon, we managed to sleep through until about five this morning. We didn't think this was too bad in terms of adjusting to local time. With most museums not opening until 10.00am we were not in a rush to get going. I worked on my travel diary until about 8.00am and then we showered and went down to breakfast. Considering that the hotel is only costing €73.00/night the breakfast buffet was quite a spread catering to all tastes with Asian, European and English options available. After leaving our bags in the hotel's luggage room we caught the tram to Willy-Brandt-Platz again. This time we walked though the gardens that follow the line ... read more
