Quite a comfortable journey, although the plane was full to the rafters, with kids everywhere! We both managed to get a bit of sleep on the way home, which was quite handy as we were due to land at seven in the morning. Ben and Siobhan were kind enough to pick a couple of weray travellers up and after a refreshing coffee we were on our way home to Liam's Mum & Dad's house. We got dropped off to hug's and kisses and more coffee, before Siobhan and Ben were on there way to a friends wedding, we hope they can keep there eyes open and enjoy the posh hotel that they have booked for the event. We spent some time catching up with the family before Charlotte finally caved in and crashed out on the ... read more

BANGKOK Getting off of the boat at Chumphon we were ushered to one side an told to wait in one area, so sat there waiting and chatting to the couple that we had caught the taxi from the hotel with. They were catching an earlier train to Bangkok and were nervously watching the minutes tick by. We did warn them about the little boy in the luggage compartment trick, but they seemed unconcerned. We all hopped on the ancient bus that had very raspy and wheezing air con and were quite glad that we were only going a short distance. On arriving at the train station the other couple unfortunately found that some of the strap’s on there bag had been opened and we hoped for them that they had not been robbed, but they went ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao May 9th 2010

KOH TAO Koh Tao has a special place in the hearts of scuba divers worldwide and was once a favoured hideout for pirates who stashed their gems deep within the jungle. This magical island however now has more of a reputation for its treasures under the sea. Diving drives the islands economy as Koh Tao issues more diving certifications than any other place in the world (yes, even more than the great barrier reef in Australia!). It is no surprise really as there are dozens of spectacular shallow reefs just off the shore. These colourful realms teem with marine life , from triangle angelfish to the inconceivably large whale sharks, and everything in between - rays, sharks, barracuda etc. Koh Tao literary means ’Turtle Island’. Well in a panic last night we found a cheap hotel ... read more

KOH PHA NGAN What a palaver to get here, but we are so glad we booked a joint ticket, we got on the ferry early and got a good seat, this ferry was a larger ferry. We had to cross Thailand so from the ferry terminal we were picked up by the company and as we were the last ones out, everyone else was put into a minibus and we got our own car! As we were going down the newly made compacted sand roads the back of the minibus opened in front of us and a load of bags fell out! Our driver picked up one and stuck it in the front seat of our car, whilst a passenger grabbed the other and put it back in the minibus. In no time we were dropped ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don April 25th 2010

KOH PHI PHI Well this is a different pace of life! We get off the ferry and are pointed over to the tourist information shops there that are actually really well set up. They have the pictures info and prices of all of the available hotels on the island. It is not that big, so it is quiet a easy operation to run! The one my sister had recommended on long beach was unfortunately too expensive, so we plumped for a cheaper one in the town, The White 2 Hotel. It was a hotel painted all white, can you believe it!, with a huge double bed, Air Con and FREE Wi-Fi! A man was sent to pick us up and as there are no motorised vehicles on the island he turns up with a big wheelie ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lanta April 25th 2010

KOH LANTA After an interminable wait at passport control, we got whisked through and onto the boat. As we did not have a seat number we got sent to the front by the window, great for the leg room, but not great for watching the TV, which was showing Hellboy 2. We managed to get a bit of a snooze and done a bit of reading, before in no time we had arrived in Satun. Well this bit of the journey was a bit of a blur as no one seems to know how to get from Langkawi to Koh Lanta. We arrived at the terminal and Charlotte accosted as couple of sticker wearing passengers to ask them how they were doing the next bit of the journey, but they did not seem to know either ... read more

LANGKAWI We arrived at the ferry port, sailing past the big Eagle at ‘Eagle Square’, we grabbed a taxi to Pantai Tengah and Zackry’s guesthouse, which we made home for the next couple of weeks. We were given a double room, but that afternoon they were changing the roof from a noisy one for the summer, to a quieter one that did not tinkle so much when it rains. It is funny, when you are exhausted, how you can sleep through anything! Even a roof being changed. That evening we took a walk up the road, looking for some where to eat, everywhere seemed so expensive but we came across a nice little restaurant in the Sun Mall. It had a ladyboy as the waiter, who was very pleasant and it turned out that she had ... read more

PENANG BATU FERRINGHI We jumped off of the bus at Butterworth with numb bum’s and headed down to the ferry, which was located at the end of the bus terminal, quite simple really! We had to get change for the MR1.20 fare (it is free on the way back!) as we needed to feed coins into the machine to get through the barriers. 10 -15 minutes later, after a quick sprite and a wee, we were disembarking in Georgetown. Nice and easy! We left the ferry terminal and the bus stop was right outside, there was a 101 waiting, so we jumped on. Unfortunately we did not have any small change, so Liam ran off, leaving Charlotte on the bus with the bags to buy a sprite and get some change! The bus waited! Yeah, this ... read more

CAMERON HIGHLANDS After a very comfortable five hour journey we arrive at Tanah Rata, a cute little town in the Cameron Highlands, we get off and jump into the obligatory white minibus, which whisks us away to Fathers guesthouse, a little bit of heaven. The climate up here is a lot cooler, wow what a difference! The posh rooms in the guest house were all full when we booked, so we got cheaper room in the sheds at the bottom of the garden (it was half the price!) Great, although the walls were pretty thin, they were very airy and comfortable. The dorm’s were in this area as well and they looked very good value for money too. No bunks in sight, yeah! Every one was really friendly and loads of people came up to us ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Kuala Lumpur March 31st 2010

KUALA LUMPUR Well we left the hostel in plenty of time and the metro & bus worked in our favour, so we arrive at the train station an hour early. We relax (as much as you can) into the plastic chairs and read our books whilst we wait for the gates to open. In no time the gates open and we pass through passport control and pick up our boarding cards for Malaysia, pass through customs and hop on the train. Second class, although a little worn now is still better than our trains! They recline so far back you are almost laying flat on your back! We relax in for the seven hour train journey and just as I pull out the computer and start typing, I get into my flow and then we stop ... read more
