SINGAPORE Well we had a nice comfortable flight to Singapore, with nice food and a few bottles of wine! We even managed to exchange the big pillows we were carrying around of a couple of smaller airline ones! Yeah! We brought our EZLink card for the underground metro system and jumped on the train to Chinatown. Walking along the road in Chinatown we spot the bar that is below the hostel and check in. Our room is three buildings along on the first floor next to the kitchen. It is above a shophouse so nice and quiet. But the room is small, enough room for the bed, a tiny wardrobe, dressing table and room for the door to open! I don’t know why they don’t take out the furniture, so we have room for our backpack! ... read more

MELBOURNE We take the taxi to the address we have been given for the Embassy and are expecting to get out at a building that looks like a Buddhist temple, however it looks more like a block of offices and there is nothing that states there is an Embassy there! We recheck the address, so does the taxi driver, so we bid him a fond farewell before heading in at speed as it nearly midday! We find the Embassy listed in the building information on the third floor, so jump in the lift. We rush in and had over the forms and photos as they enquire whether we have just come from Thailand or are on our way there very shortly. No we explain, we have just arrived from Adelaide and wanted to get here before ... read more

THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD Well we were up and ready waiting for the taxi nice and early. We waited and waited and waited! After two phone calls and 45 minutes it had still not arrived. In that time Frank had called to say his bus had not turned up so he was going to be late. We told him to make his way to us and either grab a cab if he did not make it or we would pick him up en route. We also reassured Katie that we were on the way, but the cab was late! Finally it turned up and we jumped in and picked up Katie. Frank had got onto a bus and we told him a road to got to so we could pick him up. We went to the ... read more

QUORN & THE FLINDERS RANGES QUORN We continued our journey South and stopped at the ancient salt lakes which are remnants of an inland sea. We stopped off for lunch and quickly got back on the road again. This afternoon Spud has been promising that we would stop off at his Roadhouse on the way to Quorn. He has kept it up pretty well, so we half believe him! But low and behold, there it is ‘Spud’s Roadhouse’. We did let him know on our return to the bus that we had got free drink and ice cream on mentioning that we are friends of his, he plays along happily what we have done well! We arrive into Quorn, the quaint and historical railway township nestled at the entrance to the Richman Valley. We have two ... read more

COOBER PEDY Morning has broken…….but as we are all getting up, there is one very quiet form next door but one to us, Toni. Soon everyone is up and showered except for her, Charlotte thinks she is dead, so gingerly goes over and pokes her. No she is alive, just a heavy sleeper, We really thought as there was no noise coming from her and we were all making so much noise that something was up! Charlotte made it through the night, Toni heard no snoring, although Ueli did hear a bit at the beginning of the night, just not as bad as last night! Phew, may be it was not her! An early start again today and although Henning, a strange German chap, tried to get a later start, we all quashed his idea as ... read more

ULURU & KATA TJUTA ULURU Well they do say that the early bird catches the worm! So second day in a row it is a 5.30am start! The early start consists of us getting into the bus and go back to sleep for an hour whist Spud drives us to Uluru for sunrise. Spud wakes us up on the entry to the National Park this morning with the theme from the A-Team! We all get given our own tickets for the National Park that we need to wave from the window every time we enter! The talk on the bus turns to the snorer last night! What a noise he made! Well Charlotte just held her hands up and admitted it must be her (she had no choice as we were all to be together for ... read more

CAIRNS & CAPE TRIBULATION CAIRNS Well we arrive after a couple of hours on the bus where Liam had to endure the film “Meet the Parents”, which had both Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, (the best he can wish either of hem is leprosy!) poor Charlotte! Having to listen to him ranting! We get dropped at the Greyhound stop by the Marina with no idea where to stay and no lonely planet! Off and away to the nearest free Wi-Fi spot, me thinks! After a couple of hours messing around trying to find a hostel, we plump for the cheapest, which is also the closest! The Nomad Esplanade! We head over and meet Josh who checks us in! Oh no, we have been given a double under a single with the thinnest mattress ever, along with ... read more

MISSION BEACH We arrive into Mission beach and are meet by an older gentleman in a regulation beat up white minibus that reminded us of the one in Bundaberg! He was harping on about being the only one in the village, (hostel, not gay!) as everyone else jumped on the Absolute bus, hmmm not a good sight! We arrive and an older lady took forever to check us in and as we were taking our bags into the room she realised the room had not been cleaned! Hmm! Not hard when you only have 8 rooms to look after in total! The whole place just looked a little grubby, the paint on the floor had been rubbed through a couple of different coloured layers to the concrete and the photos from the website must have been ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide February 27th 2010

ADELAIDE We spent a day chilling out after the tour, which with the free WIFI gave us time to find out what was happening in the world! We went out the next day, met Katie for lunch, just up from the YHA, and told her we had decided to stay in Adelaide (as we could extend our stay at the hostel we were in). We all wandered along the main road King William Street, then down the shopping street, Rundle Mall. We hung around watching quite a funny busker who got up on this huge unicycle. Then wandered down to the big metal balls that the mall is famous for. Charlotte and Katie snuck up a glass elevator outside Toys-r-us and felt very naughty as it said everywhere that we were not aloud to travel for ... read more

ALICE SPRINGS TO KINGS CANYON AND ULARU ALICE SPRINGS We are getting used to all of this travelling and find that one of the benefits of forgetting to check in online & getting there early was that we got given the emergency seats over the wing with more leg room, because of Liam’s height! Yeah! We land on the runway at Alice Springs and are hit straight away by both the heat and the fly’s! We jump in the minibus to the hostel, Alice Lodge, via another hostel and check in. We are given our double room, which turns out to be a converted caravan! But it does have air con, free WIFI and a huge bed. We jump into the minibus to town and have a wander around, picking up fly nets and doing some ... read more
