Geo: 52.1081, 4.27309We enjoyed a late Sunday morning breakfast with the family, then it was off to het Keringhuis, part of the WaterWerks. It's a giant gate that can be closed across the Maas. It was pretty cool! It was a rainy day, but this was mostly inside. The Dutch have learned a thing or thirty about managing floods and storm surges, and the engineering is truly amazing. After the Keringhius, we headed over to Scheveningen. This is a a resort area of Holland, with beaches, a boardwalk, rides -- a very pleasnt place to spend a morning.Unless of course, there's a bit of a storm coming in off the North Sea.Oof. It was SO windy, and off-and-on rainy. We had lunch on the boardwalk, and then Dejo & I went to find a geo-cache on the ... read more

Geo: 52.0103, 4.70983We drove over to Ed & Anja's place in Gouda, and got to meet their dog, Bandit. We walked over to the heart of Gouda. There was a festival going on (Waterstad), so lots of boats were in the canals, and entertainment in the parks (and canals). Anja took us through the local cathedral, which was huge! It's known for its stained glass windows, which were also huge – and beautiful. Sadly, you're not allowed to take photos inside the cathedral, so you'll just have to take my word for it.We all (Ed & Anja, Ron, Elian, Shannon & Mike, Ans & Joop, and the 4 of us) had some lunch in a restaurant under a big awning, in a corner booth. Way too comfortable -- could've stayed there for hours. A little ice ... read more

Geo: 52.1058, 4.72639After some breakfast, Joop drove us around Reeuwijk, and the plassen. Those are kindof like plots of water, and there are roads connecting them. Water, water, everywhere! We stopped for coffee (naturally) at a restaurant next to the ferry in Schoonhoven. We had the yummiest appelgeback met slagroom. It's hard to describe, as it's not a cake, but it's not really a pie, either. I need to find a recipe that might come close. But the Dutch have all their sweets, it seems, with slagroom -- whipped cream. In the afternoon, Jerome, Dejo & I walked down to a shopping center nearby and picked out some flowers and a couple of small potted flowers for Ans & Joop. it was their 50th anniversary, after all -- it seemed appropriate to get something!A hired minivan taxi ... read more

Geo: 52.0454, 4.72458We had a nice breakfast with Uncle John, then had to be on our way to Leeds. We were really sad to leave him, as he's an interesting guy to talk with. But we had airline tickets that we needed to use, so off we went. Fortunately, the rain held off for us all week, but we got it all on the road to Leeds. After missing what is apparently the only mention of the Leeds airport on the motorway signs, Dejo navigated us back into the right area, and we got the car turned in, and on the flight (after a bit of a delay). When we arrived in Amsterdam, we were met by Ans & Joop, and Ed. They drove us back to Ans & Joop's place, and the whole family gathered there ... read more

Geo: 54.506, -0.692334Before breakfast, Dejo & I went for a short stroll down the lane the other direction from the Chequers Inn. A custom-cooked breakfast gave us enough energy for the morning, and we headed up towards Whitby. On the way out of the village, we stopped to grab a picture of the Pedestrian Crossing sign that some of the local lads had some fun with. It was a very pretty drive along the south edge of the Yorkshire Moors National Park. We happened to drive past the Hole Of Horcum, so we stopped off to have a peek. Uncle John -- Wil's youngest brother -- is a harpsichord maker/restorer who lives in Lythe, just outside of Whitby. We arrived at Uncle John's in time for lunch (a really yummy homemade curry soup), and then we ... read more

Geo: 53.9436, -1.27358Dejo & I strolled about the area around The Brownlow a bit, first thing in the morning. We enjoyed a full cooked English Breakfast (the first for Jerome & Andrew), and then we had to get on the road. We headed north, toward the general vicinity of York, stopping for sandwiches (and a yummy box of strawberries) at a rest station along the way. We found a small town with a nice park, and enjoyed our lunch on a bench. We decided to stop in a city that was large enough to be named on highway signs, but not a huge city: Wetherby. The folks at the tourist info centre in the library were nice enough to ring a couple of places for us, and we ended up at a pub inn - The Chequers ... read more

Geo: 51.836, -0.629815First thing in the morning, we headed over to Westminster Abbey. At my insistence, we joined the next verger-led tour. Your entry fee gets you the audio tour, which is nice enough, but you get a whole different experience by paying the £3 extra to have one of the abbey staff show you around. We were seated in the Shrine of St. Edward the Confessor (not accessible to the general public) while the verger pointed out the folks laid to rest around the area: Edward I, Richard II, Henry V.....nobody special. You also get to sit in the choir stalls while you learn some more of the history of the abbey. Oh, so much history there! Though we were sorry to cut things short, we needed to get rolling, in order to get checked ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Andrew wasn't able to get off work til Saturday, so he flew out then and arrived early Sunday morning. Jerome, Dejo & I headed to Victoria station by tube, to wait for him to arrive by Gatwick Express. We had coffee and a little breakfast at a cafe in the station. We'd told Andrew exactly where we'd be, thanks to the magic of the internet, and maps helpfully placed on the station's website.Once he arrived, we went back to the flat to let him drop his stuff, and have a short nap. Then it was over to the Tower of London, for a Yeoman Warder tour, and a look 'round the grounds. I've been to London maybe 6 or 8 times, and I never get tired of it. Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Since Jerome is a huge music fan, specifically of the Beatles, going to Abbey Road was a must-do. Unfortunately, you can't tour the studios, but you can do your own version of the "Abbey Road" album cover -- if you can find a spot in between the traffic. However, an early start to the day (like, 7 am....on a Saturday) meant that we had the zebra crossing pretty much to ourselves. We got some good shots of the boys paying homage to the album cover, then it was off to St. James Park, for the Trooping the Colour. We found a spot that we thought would be really stellar – affording a view of the grounds as well as the road – but after the boys had gone off to find a Tesco (to get ... read more

Geo: 51.48, -0.605995Since we wanted to save the major London landmarks until Andrew arrived on Sunday, we decided to take a train to Windsor Castle (the real one this time). We just missed the changing of the guard there (at 11), but did get ourselves on a 1 pm tour of the kitchen. We went through the State Apartments, which were partially being prepped for Garter Day that next Monday (which meant we couldn't see St. George's Chapel). It was kinda cool, though , to see the various table settings being readied for the fancy-schmancy dinner on Monday. The kitchen tour was really interesting, and well worth the additional £5. We got to go down into parts of the castle that weren't really known in modern times, until the fire in 1992. The actual kitchen itself ... read more
