Geo: 46.3093, 3.28787For the 2nd time this trip, we were able to get a fresh baguette for breakfast at a nearby boulangerie. Today's plan was to go into Vierzon in hopes of finding a laundry, and a post office. I had looked up online, and found the location of what I thought was one Laundromat, but we decided to walk around just a little in the town center, and see if there was another one that wasn't listed online. We didn't find one, but did come across the post office, where the woman who first asked if we needed help, called over a very nice man who spoke a little English. We worked out that the prepaid box would be cheaper to send (though at €46, that's a relative term) than if we had our own ... read more

Geo: 47.2463, 1.98841Here's something that the other blogs and forums may not tell you: Sleeping on the side of the road – particularly when the road isn't yet closed, and there are cars, vans and trucks going by -- isn't the best night's sleep you'll ever get. The bigger the vehicle – and the faster their speed – the more air they push. The more air they push, the less sleep you get. If you get the feeling that this wasn't our most restful night's sleep, you're correct. So, up and at 'em. A little breakfast in the van, then we rode our bikes into Durtal to look around a bit. A quick café gave us a little extra energy. As we came into the center of town, the traffic was stopped a bit for some utilities ... read more

Geo: 48.636, -1.51208We had the luxury of sleeping in a bit (you know….like until 7:30!), and I went off to get a fresh baguette -- with success this time! And the bread was still a little warm when I cut into it, back at the van. After a little breakfast – while watching that criterium kid do some more laps – we did a little planning for the day. There was a geo cache nearby, so we took the bikes down a little path by the canal, and found it with no problem. Since we knew we were taking off right after the time trial (or the part of it that we wanted to see), we made sure the camper was ready to go as soon as we were. We topped up the water (and it ... read more

Hello to our home for 1 night

Geo: 48.636, -1.51208After mulling it over during breakfast, we decided that – as much as we really wanted to explore the area – or maybe catch some of the stage going up to Saint Malo – we probably needed to get the water tank sorted out before we headed up into the Alps, where the toilet in our van might be our only option. So, we headed back down to Nantes, to another McRent affiliate, to seek their help. This is about a 2-hour drive each way, so it wasn't a short trip. Though we had the street address, we still had some challenges in finding the place. 316 Rue de Nantes. Oh, there's 315, we should be right across the street.Well, if we were in North America, perhaps. In France, the numbers on one side of ... read more

Geo: 46.9157, -2.04375We woke up, a little excited at the idea of FINALLY getting to walk to a boulangerie to get a baguette for our breakfast – there was one just a block away from this parking area. We've been buying bread and having it the next day, which – while still miles ahead of the King Soopers options at home – isn't quite the quaint experience we were looking forward to. Imagine, then, our disappointment when the sign at the local boulangerie said that they were closed on Mondays.Le sigh. So, off we went to the next town, Sabres, where we happened upon a lovely little boulangerie right across from the town center. The delightful man helped us with a baguette for lunch, a pain au chocolat for breakfast, and a lovely cuppa café to go ... read more

Geo: 44.0466, -0.651112We got a relatively early start, as we were trying to get into the feed zone of the next stage before the roads were closed. It turned out that we were more worried than we needed to be (which may have given us a false sense of security/ease that might not serve us well in later stages). Perhaps there just aren't as many people in this part of the country? Or everyone who was going to watch the stage was doing so from higher up on the mountains of this climb?Regardless….we found a spot right in the middle of the feed zone activity, and pulled over next to some other cars/camping cars, and settled in. We did a little recon by foot, walking into the nearby village, while both enjoying the amazing scenery, and ... read more

Geo: 43.0007, 1.34216So, though it was really nice little camp area, we had to get going fairly early, since we were trying to make it partway up a mountain before they closed the roads. As we were doing our "cross-check" before taking off, we discovered a pretty large puddle on the ground. And the puddle was growing, as it was coming out of a small clear hose under the campervan. Well. There went €3 and all our fresh water. Not drinking water, though – the stuff in the tank is fine for cleaning, but tastes really plastic-y. But still. No dishes, no toilet, no shower, no hand-washing. Le sigh. But there wasn't likely to be a repair place nearby, so we set off, and on the road, I sent an e-mail to the rental place, asking ... read more

Geo: 42.8104, 2.50425We walked all the way over to the food truck for a fresh baguette for breakfast, which we gobbled down with some beurre and lovely berry medley store-brand jam that we bought thefirst day in the van. Then we had to say "Au revoir" to our lovely beachside aire (though we didn't get a chance to walk along the beach), and headed out to Montpellier. We'd decided to park at the shopping center where we caught the tram yesterday. After all, we knew where it was, we knew we could park there, and there was plenty of space. There is plenty of space, though some of it isn't accessible to you if you're 2.5 meters tall (as a vehicle, that is). Which we are. Still, we found a shaded spot, and made our way to ... read more

Geo: 43.6085, 3.87921Thursday, July 4, 2013First of all: Happy Birthday to Dejo!!!! We started the day with some coffee, and a baguette from the food truck. Dejo went to retrieve the towels from the clothesline, only to find that they were gone. We don't think they were stolen on purpose (they weren't new, not pretty, not large). More likely, some fellow was sent out by his wife to get the towels off the clothesline, and he – not knowing any better – just grabbed all the towels he saw, including ours. How far into their trip until he got a tongue-lashing? "Whose towels are these??" “How should I know?” “Where did they come from?” “You told me to get the towels, so I got the towels.”We found the bus stop, for a ride into Montpellier to ... read more

Geo: 43.4854, 6.21784Wednesday, July 3, 2013Fair warning: This entry is a particularly lengthy one. Pam + coffee + 2 hours on the highway with a charged-up laptop = the following….Having slept as well as one can, on a mattress made for napping instead of a full night's sleep, we downed some breakfast and headed off to try to get to the feed zone. For you cycling newbies (or never-evers, don't-wannas), here's what a feed zone is, and why it might be of interest to people like us: If you're a cyclist, and you're riding 100+ miles, you're going to get hungry. And since you're wearing that tight spandex jersey and shorts (partly because it's got the sponsor's logos on it, partly because it fits closely and has the least chance of chafing and getting caught in ... read more
