Geo: 39.3759, -104.869 am Mountain time. That's what time the official announcement of the 2017 Giro d'Italia route was announced.Okay, in reality, that's what time the presentation started. The actual route announcement didn't really begin until almost 10 am, and wasn't done until 11.But there I sat for almost 2 hours, with the streaming presentation in front of me, a Google Doc open to jot the city pairs into a table functioning as a calendar, and a Google map open, in which to pin the routes. When we decided to follow the 100th Tour de France, we went all-in, choosing to follow the whole thing. Tout la Tour de France. Now we know better. :) We know that a campervan isn't quite as fancy-free as we thought, and we know that 3 full weeks (plus travel time) gets long, ... read more

Geo: 43.7034, 7.2662It wasn't my first choice, this having a 7:20 am flight, but for $8, who am I to complain? One bonus to being at the airport that early: You get to watch the sun rise. One downside: It might be too early to really think through looking in all the places in the rental car that you might have left something. For example, you might forget to check the passenger door map pocket, to see if you'd put the pocketknife there after liberating an arrow sign. Our flight to Frankfurt was uneventful, but the bit where we flew over the Alps was specTACular. Really amazing. Snow-covered jagged peaks as far as I could see.Note to self: Add a trip to Switzerland to the short list of upcoming vacations. Our layover in Frankfurt was also uneventful.Once on the plane back ... read more

Geo: 43.216, 5.53863Our last morning at L'Epicerie. At breakfast, there was another woman who had the most delightful story. She was in town to look for a place for her wedding in August. She'd ended up finding a darling chateau that happened to be available for her weekend, and which happened to have about the right number of rooms, and which happened to be less expensive than the place she originally thought she wanted. Talk about your serendipity! After a little challenge in figuring out how to pay for the parking garage (not at the exit, as you might think....we had to go upstairs to an office to pay first), we were on our way. Rather than head straight back to Nice (our flight was the following day), we decided to take our time getting back. The fact ... read more

Geo: 43.5249, 5.45414 We started off with breakfast the way I like it: full of bread, delicious jam, and pleasant conversation. The hotel/inn has a single large table, so you get a chance to chat with other guests. We met a woman who was traveling with her college-aged daughter and her daughter's friend, and they were heading out for a guided tour, so they didn't get to linger over breakfast. Luc (one of the proprietors) makes his own jam, so we enjoyed some watermelon jam and strawberry jam on our fresh baguettes.Laurent claimed that in Aix, they drink coffee out of bowls, so we played along. He could just be taking the mickey, but it delivered the coffee to my mouth, so I didn't care much (though it does cool off much more quickly, with that much ... read more

Geo: 43.7503, 7.41284The bike race is done, I guess it's time to move on....We headed to our little boulangerie only to find them closed on a Monday, so we went in search of another. We found one that was just as tasty, but bigger and less quaint. But it served the purpose of fueling us for a bit, so that was the important part. Then it was off to Monaco, dahling.Really, we were a little underwhelmed. There were a couple of cool cars (McLaren, anyone?) parked here and there, but nothing that had us drooling. We walked along the marina and gazed at the multitude of yachts that are docked there.I looked up a few on my phone, and the ones I could find info on were owned by oil millionaires -- nobody we'd ever heard of. But ... read more

Geo: 43.7284, 7.36224I musta' been tired, because I slept in until almost 8. That's pretty late for me anymore. Good thing we didn't have anything specific to do, early that morning. We grabbed a quick pastry from the boulangerie, and ate it on our way back to the start area for the last day of the race. There were still more riders that Gnorm wanted to meet, so we headed back to the buses. We did manage to meet Wilco Kelderman and Luke Rowe, before they all headed to the start line. Today, they were doing a circuit of sorts, starting in Nice, going through Èze, then looping around a pass and coming back through Èze, before finishing in Nice.Dejo had decided we should head there, so we could see them come through twice. It's a cute village right on ... read more

Geo: 43.6936, 7.25556After a decent night's sleep, we were ready to go be tourists.Or cycling fans. You decide which is more likely. You think our decision to come to Nice at this particular time -- out of all the destinations Lufthansa serves -- was *purely* based on how pretty it is? <chuckle>The folks who put on the Tour de France also organize several smaller races, one of which is the Paris-Nice. It's one of the earlier stage races (meaning a race that takes place over several days) of the year, and it's a fairly Big Deal. And we were able to get the great airfare deal to just coincide with the last couple of days of this week-long race.So here we are.We popped around the corner from the hotel and found a teeny boulangerie with a lovely lady ... read more

Geo: 43.7034, 7.2662We land in Nice.Nice.The very pleasant man at Europcar helped us get a slightly smaller car than we'd originally been assigned (in Europe, smaller is usually better), and we were off to the hotel. After one small wrong turn (my fault, not Dejo's), we found the hotel, and the parking garage (relatively spacious, really). The jetlag, the hike through Frankfurt AIrport, and just the traveling in general had sapped us of most of our energy, so we got checked in, and then set off in search of some dinner close by.There were a few places within a few blocks of the hotel, so we wandered a bit, checking out menus and the looks of places. We decided on pizza.Yes, in France.Don't judge.I got a salmon pizza (and actually, I can say "Eet's good" with a straight ... read more

Geo: 50.0407, 8.56882Our flight on a Lufthansa 747 from Denver to Frankfurt went pretty well. We had put in a bid for an upgrade to Premium Economy, but we didn't offer enough (only $265 per person), so it was back to our regular seats. But there was a USB port next to the seatback screen, so my powerhungry self could relax, knowing that my iPhone would be at 100% when we arrived.(for those who might need it, it's worth noting that there is a regular outlet under the seat, for those who might need to charge a laptop or something). We arrived at about 10 (early), and our connecting flight to Nice didn't leave til 4:30, so we had plenty of time to kill.In looking at one of the many interactive info maps that are placed around ... read more

Geo: 39.3759, -104.86Some of my readers may know that I'm a (very) part-time travel agent. Mornings and a few evenings, arranging travel for no more than a dozen or so clients at a time. Many people think that being a travel agent gets you all kindsa' freebies, discounts, and perks.Ha!Okay, hotel discounts are pretty easy to come by (unless you're looking at popular destinations during popular times). And sometimes you can get a discount on airport parking, or a free day at an amusement park (if you've taken the time to go through the online course and learn about the products). But air discounts? A thing of the past.So imagine my skepticism when I got an e-mail from an airline, offering $8 fares.I nearly didn't open the e-mail.But I did, and found that they were offering $8 fares ... read more
