Geo: 52.397, 13.0586Today I took a day trip to Potsdam. A pretty little town about 25km outside of Berlin. This is the place that the Kaisers built their palaces. There are and awful lot of palaces out there. The first place we were taken to was the Palace of Frederik II, otherwise known as Frederik the Great. Freddie launched a war on Russia, Austria, France and Sweden known as the seven year war. At the end of the war his enemies whispered that he was broke. So to prove them wrong he built this lavish palace in Potsdam. It was truly beautiful, with hundreds of statues, two freestanding palaces across the driveway for guests and beautifully manicured gardens, complete with fountains. He never lived in it but he proved his point. Just down the road was ... read more

Geo: 52.5223, 13.3706So today was a bit of a bust I'm afraid. My intention was to go to the Hohenschonhausen, which is a prison the Stasi used for deserters and political dissenters during the soviet occupation. Kim had mentioned it yesterday on our tour. You can only see Hohenschonhausen by guided tour and their tours weren't until 2.30. No matter I thought, I can go to a museum beforehand. My intention was to head to the Pergamon Museum, where they have monuments from ancient cities. However things went a bit awry. I was a little bit late getting started as the Hohenschonhausen is a bit out if town and I had to figure out how to get from one place to the other. The very nice lass at the tourist information booth in the train station ... read more

Geo: 52.5156, 13.3899I started my day with a walking walking tour of Berlin. Our guide, Kim, was an Aussie girl from Newcastle, studying her history masters here in Berlin. The tour started at the Brandenburg gate. The gate was built in the 1700's and was originally a tollway where excise taxes were extracted from traders transporting goods from the Prussian empire. On top of the gate is a bronze statue of a woman on a four horse chariot. Originally this woman was called Eirene, the goddess of peace. When Napoleon invaded the city in the 1806 he really liked the statue and he took it down and had it taken to the Louvre in Paris, which the Germans took as a great insult. When they won independence in 1814 the statue was returned to the gate, ... read more

Geo: 52.5156, 13.39Sorry to report not too much exciting stuff happened today. I called a cab to take me to the train station. Gorgeous George had recommended the cab company. I wish I had this cab company coming into Prague. The cab was so nice and clean, I got a free bottle of water, and there was a little tablet attached to the back of the passenger seat showing me the proposed route and where we were. Compare that to the dodgy operator I got coming into town, who charged me twice as much to ride in his 1980's cruiser. I now realise that first cabbie ripped me off. Booooo!I made it to the train station with 15 minutes to spare, however I hadn't purchased my ticket yet. I find the ticket office, stand in line ... read more

Geo: 50.0873, 14.4211Today I did a walking tour and I learned much more about this beautiful place. We started at the Prague Castle, originally built in the 920's, it was expanded over the next seven centuries to the monstrosity it is today. Because of its size it is recommended that we take a whole day to see it, but today we just walked through the courtyards and took a quick peek inside the Cathedral St Vitus. While the Czech republic has no royal family anymore, the castle is still the residence of the Czech president. Its hard to imagine, but the Czech republic has had five political regimes in the last century1) they were a absolute monarchy under the Austro Hungarian empire, until WW12) after WW1 and the fall if the great empires, Czechoslovakia became a ... read more

Geo: 50.0872, 14.4037So my mission this morning was to wash some clothes. My host had kindly told me of a laundromat nearby so off I wandered with washing bag in hand. The laundromat is not open until 2pm. So back to home I wandered, washing bag in hand. As that scuttled my morning plans I made my way down to the town square. After walking around and taking some happy snaps I jumped on a little choo choo train tour. I was a bit disappointed with the tour. They went all around town, which was great because Prague is magnificent. However, the tour information was very brief and I only got half of it because the speaker system was a bit dodgy. Add in the suspension on those little trains is not great. I saved my ... read more

Geo: 50.0865, 14.4078I was up reasonably early this morning to catch my train to Prague. My train was at at 9.01 and this is Germany, when they say 9.01, what they mean is 9.01. My train was quite old, it had compartments. I haven't been on a train like that in eons. I was sharing a compartment with a lovely older Scottish couple and a very nice older german couple who were quite happy to chat until they realised we couldn't understand a word they were saying. The countryside on the way up was as expected, beautiful. Although for the longest time we were travelling through a heavy mist. I now suspect it wasn't mist but, clouds, although I didn't notice any mountains, but then the mist was very thick. I was beginning to fear that ... read more

Geo: 48.1363, 11.5784So after yesterdays downer, today was time for something a bit lighter. I had booked a tour to Neuschwanstein Castle. This is the castle that inspired just about every castle in Walt Disneys movies. A huge shining white castle on a mountain top, with huge turrets and balconies. The tour started at the train station, with a 3 hour joinery to Hohenshwangau. This is a little village in the Bavarian Alps. The country up there was magnificent. Open pastures with snaking streams running through the fields, gave way to patches of thick forest, followed by the magnificent mountains. And the mountains really go up, up up! Walls of mighty peaks with rocky outcrops. I wondered if people could actually go up there. It didn't look like there was much friendly ground. This question was ... read more

Geo: 48.1363, 11.5784OK so if you're an avid reader of my blog you might notice I missed yesterday. That's because nothing much happened. I got up early, caught the bus to Aachen, then caught a train to Coln, then another train to Munich. The train to Munich broke down in Nuremberg (so much for German efficiency) so I had to catch another train. I arrived in Munich about 4pm, starving hungry because all I had to eat were some sandwiches I got on the train. Had dinner (Pork belly, yum) then made my way to my accommodation. I've booked another place through Air BnB and this time I have this girls apartment (I don't know where she goes when her place is hired out because its just a bedsitter but its in an awesome location, right ... read more

Geo: 50.8512, 5.69154OK, so this mornings mission was to find yet another post office. Why? Because in my efficient packing in Amsterdam I somehow managed to pack the TV remote from the last hotel. Why? I don't know, some kind of brain freeze. I've now gone from leaving stuff in hotels to unintentionally flogging stuff. After consulting google I took to the streets. Google listed 2 offices, which I couldn't find. So I went to the tourist office. They gave me directions and said AKO. Righto, that should be easy. Nope nothing. Finally in frustration I asked a random shopkeeper who explained they don't have a post office, but down the road third street to the right was a magazine shop, AKO, who provide postal services. Finally found it! Only took two hours out of my ... read more
