Geo: 50.2918, 2.77002Today I saw the seedy underground of Arras, well more damp than seedy.I started the day with a tour of the Boves. Arras is built over an old limestone mine. The mines were used up until the 19th century when the town expanded to the ground on top of them. They were abandoned at this time as the people figured it was probaly not a good idea to mine underneath the town. The Boves are a set of mine shafts under the town square. They go down as far as 12metres. During the two wars the mine shafts were reinforced and used as bomb shelters for the townsfolk. The first level was quite damp as the rainwater from above seeped down into the limestone. Then the guide pointed out layers of flint packed into ... read more

Geo: 50.2918, 2.77I managed to score a tour of Fromelle today. Apparently this is something I really should have booked ahead. The first tour company I approached were fully booked, but they recomended Phil, an Aussie expat living here in Arras. Phil had just returned from holiday and had no bookings the afternoon. The usual tour bus was in for a service, so as it was just the two of us we toured the countryside in his car. The tour was fantastic, sad, but really good. First stop was a trip to Pheasant Wood, where the bodies of 250 missing Australian and British soldiers were found in 2008. It is a quiet little nondescript paddock on the edge of town. A Melbourne history buff by the name of Lambis Englezos, found the bodies by comparing aerial ... read more

Geo: 50.2929, 2.7825Bit of a quiet one today. I was up reasonably early to pack my meagre possessions and head to Gare du Nord. After a very smelly cab ride, I found Gare du Nord to be a very easy train station to negotiate, which was a relief because when the cab pulled up I looked up and thought "My God its HUGE" Like Italy, they don't tell you which platform to go to until 20 minutes before departure. By that stage I had somehow made a friend. Some random dude approached me while I was outside having a smoke, started chatting to me in French. When he realised I couldn't speak french he whipped out his mobile and we chatted via google translate. I thought he was just being polite but he stayed with me ... read more

Geo: 48.8529, 2.27588So today I got up, showered, rang Air France and Etihad and picked two more fights....still no bags. I had hoped to spend today seeing the catacombs, Sacre Coeur and Monmarte, but as it now looks like I will be without luggage for several weeks (if at all) I thought it might be best to go buy some clothes. I put in a call to my insurance company to find out exactly what I was covered for. The guy at Global Nomads was able to give me the number for the Etihad service desk at CDG....this is a number that neither Air France or Etihad themselves could give me. I rang the service desk, they took my details, promised to investigate and call me back. They also gave me two phone numbers for the ... read more

Geo: 48.853, 2.27552So today I wanted to see how the other side lived - so it was off to the palaces. There were three on my hit list, the Petit Palais, the Grand Palais and the royal palace. They were not what I thought they would be. As it turns out Petit Palais is actually an art gallery. I went in had a look anyway. They had an exhibition on Paris in 1900. This was the year of the world fair, when the Eiffel tower was built. Apparently this was the time when Paris was at the height of its influence, with art, fashion and technology. They haven't forgotten the good old days. And apparently they were quite good. Paris was the party town, with theatres, restaurants, night clubs etc. It was quite hedonistic. With the ... read more

Geo: 48.8588, 2.30331So after an absolutely fabulous nights sleep I was up early today and ready to take on Paree. I decided to catch the bus to Notre Dame and then make my way back along the Siene visiting all the sites along the way....that may have been a bit ambitious, there are a lot of sites to see. Notre Dame cathedral is built in Gothic style and from the exterior is quite impressive. Huge arches, imposing gargoyles, impressive spires. The interior by comparison is quite sedate. Along the sides of the church are little chapels dedicated to various saints. I was quite impressed to see a statue of Joan of Arc, they must like her on this side of the narrow sea. Surprisingly, there were not many dedications to the Virgin Mary. For those that ... read more

I had a troublesome night last night. After returning to my hotel I first rang my cousin with an update. The specialist had informed me that he could book me in for surgery on Thursday. Tan (bless her cotton socks) encouraged me to get the surgery and keep going with my trip. I thought this would be good, if I could manage it, but I certainly had my misgivings First things first, get the insurance claim started. I rang my travel insurance company, who were very helpful, however they did inform me that getting surgery in Paris was not necessarily an option. Apparently, its not automatic that I will get the treatment I wanted. This was something of a blow. What is the point of insurance if they cant help when you need it! They asked ... read more

So by now most of you will have heard I've broken my wrist so here is the down low. I had an early flight from Venice to Paris. Easy jet recommends passengers arrive at the airport two hours before the flight. So being the diligent traveller I was up at five to give myself plenty of time. I left the B&B at six and as I was walking out the front door my trolley bag got stuck on the door. I was yanking it free and stepping out onto the street and I forgot there is one step down. I tripped and fell, twisting my ankle and I must have put my right hand out to break my fall, that it did. I was a bit shaken up and hurting but I could put weight on ... read more

I thought I would start my day with a visit to Santa Maria Della Salute, a magnificent church on the Grand Canal, built in honour of the Virgin Mary for freeing the city of the black death. The exterior of the church is beautiful and once again the exterior was all I got to see. I had left my trusty shawl at home, and I was stopped by a beggar woman at the entrance because my shoulders were not covered, can you believe it? Told off by a beggar? Then she hit me up for a donation! Stuff that I say. I moved on to Palazzo Ducale. Somehow I managed to miss it when I was in San Marco's piazza the other day. I don't know how because its right next to the Piazza. The palazzo ... read more

Today I set my sights in the island of Murano, where they make beautiful glass. As I left my hotel I took my first step in the wrong direction. I don't know where my head was at, considering I've had the way to San Silvestro stop down pat ever since I got here, but I soon found myself in a street I didn't recognise. No matter, ploughed on and it wasn't long before I spied a sign pointing to Rialto. Took a short stroll over the Rialto bridge and found the vaporetto stop. As I was trying to figure out which dock to get on I heard a guy giving away complimentary trips to Murano. It was a promo thing but it was a free taxi to the island and a glass blowing display. Its Sunday ... read more
