So far so good. This morning I made my way to San Marco. It is a beautiful Piazza next to yet another magnificent Basilica. On entering the basilica I swallowed my fear of heights (again) and climbed upstairs to the terrace. Upstairs they have a museum where you can see some of the works of art, but you can also walk around the alter and get a close look at the mosaics. The entire ceiling is covered in these massive golden mosaics which took 500 years to complete. They are really overwhelming. You can also walk out in the terrace and see Piazza San Marco from above. It was impressive but as I was up quite high and the floor is slanted, I didn't stay too long. After leaving the church I walked around the Piazza ... read more

I am so very proud of myself for not getting lost. If there is a city I am going to get hopelessly lost and confused in, it will be Venice. This city has confused more seasoned travellers than I so I'm sure its bound to happen sooner rather than later. The most confusing part of getting to my hotel is to figure out how to get onto a vaporetto. I had a Venice connected ticket which should cover my transport needs while I'm here. All I had to do is figure out where to pick it up at the train station. It only took two wrong queues to figure it out. And wouldn't you know it I had to go to a automated machine to collect the darn thing. The next big challenge was trying to ... read more

You know its not a good sign when you get out of bed and your feet are already tired! Today I set a much slower pace. Only two sites visited. The first was the Uffizi gallery. My main aim was to see Bottocelli's The Birth of Venus. Its an enormous gallery and I don't know where they had that bad boy hidden but I completely missed it. I'm gonna say it wasn't on display, sometimes they do that. Not to mind there was plenty of other art work to see, and I'm glad to say it wasn't all religious. There were hundreds of sculptures, which really fascinated me. Lots of busks but plenty of statues, of both genders unlike the Medici Ricardo Museum which mainly had ladies. Reliable sources tell me that the franks and beans ... read more

Today I took a tour though the Tuscan countryside. First stop was Sienna, A lovely town not far from Florence. Sienna and Florence have had many wars over the years, the last one was about 450 years ago, but rivalry between the two is still very much there. The town is divided into 17 neighbourhoods, each with its own coat of arms, as we entered each neighbourhood the guide pointed out the coat of arms displayed clearly on the walls. Every so often we would come across a public building which had the Medici coat of arms, from the time the family took control of the city. The guide never failed to point out the arms of "the enemy" Sienna is most famous for its horse races, Il Palio which are held twice a year. The ... read more

My first stop was the Galleria dell Academia to see the famous statue of David. I wanted to get there early to avoid the queue. I was there early 8.05 to be exact, the museum doesn't open until 8.15. But I still wasn't there early enough to avoid the queue, it was already all the way down the block. I was waiting for the better part of an hour to get in. I did start to kick myself for not making a reservation but the lady in front of me commented that the reserved line was just as long. The only people going straight in were the tour groups, and didn't I shudder when I saw them starting to arrive. But about the art.... It was very religious. Most of the paintings in the gallery were ... read more

So after a lousy nights sleep I was up reasonably early. Which was a shame because my train didn't leave until 10.30. I had heaps of time to finish packing, have breakfast and check out. I had a leisurely breakfast, having a good ol' chat to my new found Californian friends. A couple (don't ask me their names) who were sitting at the table next to mine my first morning in Rome, and we seemed to catch up there every day. Like me they were checking out today so were really just cooling their heals until they had to go to the airport. I checked out just after nine giving myself plenty of time for the cab to be late and/or road blocks, of course there were none and I got to termini station with plenty ... read more

Today I decided to take it easy. I had two things on my "must do" list. 1) Laundry, despite over packing clean clothes were starting to get sparse, and 2) see the Pantheon. The hotel receptionist had given me a flyer for a self- serve laundrette around the corner. So I figured that would take the most time so off I trundled in the morning with a bag full of laundry. It appears the Italian idea of self serve is somewhat different to the Aussie interpretation. I wander into this laundry to be greeted by an attendant (surprise she was Asian) who weighed my bag, quoted me a price and took it away for me. So I wasn't stuck in a laundry for three hours washing my clothes, the morning was now mine again Just down ... read more

So I was up early this morning as I had to meet the bus to Pompeii at 7.30. I got up at six, got myself organised, packed a spare pair if shoes and socks, and headed off to the Piazza di Popolo. Upon reaching the Piazza I realised the one item I did not pack was a jacket, it was quite cool early in the morning. The Piazza was another work of art, with an Egyptian obelisk towering in the centre, twin churches at one end and fountains on either side. The tour group gathered and we were split into two groups, red and orange, and piled onto the bus. On the way in an attempt to socialise the crowd the tour guide, Diana, was asking where we were all from. If you're from England put ... read more

Today I thought I would set a slower pace to save my feet for tomorrow's trip to Pompeii. That was the plan anyway. I thought I would start with a trip to the Pantheon then wander down to the Vatican for the tour I'd booked for this afternoon. I hoped on the on/off bus and made it to the Vatican. As the tour did not cover St Peters Basilica I changed my plan and decided to start there and then go to the tour. That worked well until I saw the line at the Basilica. It snaked all the way across St Peters square. Change plans again. Sent the folks a postcard (which I will probably beat home) and then went in search of a cafe with wifi. So the first part of my day was ... read more

Can I just say.... Wow! This city is so beautiful I cannot believe my eyes. While studying the map over breakfast I realised my hotel is only a few blocks from the Colosseum so I decided that was to be my starting point. Only two right turns and down the street....provided you start walking in the right direction...and that would be the point where I went wrong. Five minutes in found myself standing on a street corner, staring at the map looking left and right down the street thinking "where is it? I should be able to see it by now?" Next to me was a restaurant and the maƮtre d asked me if I'd like to eat. I asked him if he could tell me which way to the Colosseum. He came and stood next ... read more
