Geo: 40.4157, -3.7101Today I started out looking for Plaza Mayor, I knew they had walking tours starting from there which I wanted to get in on. However first I had to find somewhere for breakfast. As I walked around the corner to Calle Mayor I realised this was not going to be an issue. Cafes everywhere. I got a ham & cheese toastie and a coffee for €2.20. Methinks spain is going to be cheap. I also picked up a tourist guide book but I think I paid to much for it, well maybe Spain is not that cheap. I found Plaza Mayor, much easier than I expected. The map the hotel gave me is huge and the second I saw it I knew I am going to get lost in this town. However the tourist ... read more

Geo: 53.3441, -6.26749Not a whole lot to report for the last few days so this will be short and sweet. Yesterday I was up and packing for my last big drive through Ireland. I hit the road around 10ish and drove from Down to Dublin, which was not as far as I had imagined. It was only a couple of hours, made so much easier when I got into the republic and hit the freeway. I had originally intended to stop a little out of Dublin as my only purpose for the next day is to get to the airport on time for my flight to Madrid. I got within 10 minute of the city limits and thought stuff it, I might go out tonight. I should have stopped. Last night was so cold I took ... read more

Geo: 54.3288, -5.71664Did I mention that Downpatrick is the place that St Patrick is (allegedly) buried. You would never know it walking around the town, St Patricks Cathedral, Patrick street, Patricks square, Patricks lane, oh, and the name of the town is DownPATRICK! They really really like him here. Truthfully, I wanted to come to Down because this is where Uncle Miler was a bishop, of the Catholic variety. I thought he would have spent time at the cathedral here, but as I have now found out he was the Bishop of Down and Connor, so he may not have been here. As I walked through St PATRICKS cathedral today, there was no mention of the man. Although the cathedral was built in the late 18th/early 19th century, which is about 200 years after his time. ... read more

Geo: 54.3288, -5.71668On Monday I set my sails and sat nav for Downpatrick in Northern Ireland. The route took me back through Pettigo, so I waved at McGrath Castle as I drove on by and went back into the UK. It feels very odd to drive accross the border with no checkpoint, passport check, nothing. Just a sign on the side of the road saying Welcome to Northern Ireland. Another weird feeling is when your car is in kilometres, your brain is in kilometres but the speed limits are in miles. They look so slow! The sat nav finally earned its value for me by translating the mph limit to kph. Hopefully no nasty tickets will be coming for me. I arrived in Downpatrick in time for lunch. I'm staying at a pub which happens to ... read more

Geo: 54.6525, -8.11151Saturday morning I started out for Donegal in the north. I had been warned by many that it was "quite a drive." It took three hours and that was with rest stops along the way. At the start of the journey I argued with the sat nav until it did what I wanted, I was not going to waste another two hours driving in the wrong direction. Just outside of Galway I stopped at another abandoned abbey. There really are a lot of them here. Claregalway Franciscan friary was another monastery decommissioned by Henry VIII. There is something very haunting about these buildings. Like visiting the colosseum or the acropolis, they are ghostly remnants of an age past...only not as old. Unlike the colosseum and the acropolis they are still used in a small ... read more

Geo: 53.2711, -9.05387I started today with a walking tour, what better way to get to know a town. There were only three of us on the tour, the pamphlet said it started at 10.30 but when no-one turned up I rang the number and it was actually re-scheduled for 11.30. Its definitely the end of tourist season. So about Galway, the first village here was built up by the Mor De Burgo family (the Burkes) who were an Anglo-Norman family. They invited 14 families to come join them, 12 Anglo-Norman and 2 Irish. The town prospered and the 14 families decided that there wasn't enough room for the Burkes who spent far to much time with the Irish, getting their Gaelic on. So they ran them out of town. In the town square there are fourteen ... read more

Geo: 53.016, -9.37758So today I got up at sunrise....which is about 8 o'clock. I'm really starting to get lazy these days. But I had arranged for breakfast around 8.30 and I had to be down to the pier at 10 to catch a ferry to the Aran islands. I booked a passage onto Inis Mor (the big island) I had thought I could drive onto the ferry, but its only for people. So upon getting onto the island I was on shanks pony. However as I was walking down the pier I was approached by a jaunty driver. That sounded fine to meThe first place he took me to was Dùn Aonghasa. This is a very old ring fort up on the cliffs. The ground getting up to the fort was quite rough. Its a good ... read more

Geo: 53.016, -9.37758So this morning I was up early to get packed and out the door. Even though I had only been in Tralee 2 nights I had stuff all over the hotel room, hangovers do not inspire tidiness. I was on the road just after ten and making my way to Tarbert. I was really winging it as I had not done any research on when the ferries leave. Fortunately for me there is one very hour. I had to wait about half an hour for the ferry, and then the trip across the Shannon was only half an hour again. The ferry pulled in at Kilrush and from there I drove to a little place called Kilkee where I stopped for lunch. From there on I think I stopped at every second town for ... read more

Geo: 52.267, -9.70966Today started out really well. I was up early for a change, showered dressed and packed by 8am. I went outside for a smoke and was greeted by an awesome sunrise over the mountains. Down the road I can see just a little bit of the ocean and I could see the mist rising off it. Magical! That was the good bit. After breakfast I headed toward Valentia island....and I got lost. Then I thought I figured out where I was, but I was wrong. There is a bridge to Valentia island from the mainland at Port Magee. Somehow I managed to make it to the island without crossing that bridge. Well at least not that I remember. When I do remember seeing the bridge I crossed from the island side...I think. Maybe aliens ... read more

Geo: 51.8347, -10.2615Wow, so many beautiful places I've seen today, Just wow! I started out from Killarney about 10ish, having slept a bit late and a huge breakfast served by Eileen at the B&B. Once again, lovely lovely woman. I got all of ten minutes down the road when I saw the sign for Muckross house. I parked the car and started to walk down what seemed like a long driveway when an old man stopped me and asked if I'd prefer to go by jaunting car, which is a horse and jig. I thought why not and jumped in. I'm glad I did because it was quite a walk to to Muckcross House. Along the way we went past Muckcross abbey which was looted and burnt during the Cromwellian wars. Several of the monks were ... read more
