Sorry to report not too much exciting stuff happened today. I called a cab to take me to the train station. Gorgeous George had recommended the cab company. I wish I had this cab company coming into Prague. The cab was so nice and clean, I got a free bottle of water, and there was a little tablet attached to the back of the passenger seat showing me the proposed route and where we were. Compare that to the dodgy operator I got coming into town, who charged me twice as much to ride in his 1980's cruiser. I now realise that first cabbie ripped me off. Booooo!
I made it to the train station with 15 minutes to spare, however I hadn't purchased my ticket yet. I find the ticket office, stand in line for what seemed like an eternity. Three clerks were operating, but I think only one of them was working. There were not many people in front of me, but when you are in a hurry, these things take forever. It turns out I needn't have worried because my train was 15 minutes late anyway.
So I after making my train, I traveled to Berlin without
any dramas. Well except for the toilet on the train, but the less said about that the better. First issue in Berlin, get to my hotel. It was only down the road from the train station, if you walk out the right side of the train station. And you should see Berlin train station. Its like something out of star trek. Multiple floors, these round glass elevators, trains going in all directions and thees a bloody shopping mall there. A full blown shopping mall. What the! Anyway after walking 10 minutes in the wrong direction, I doubled back and went the other way. My hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the "other" entrance.
So after getting settled at my hotel I went out exploring. I have to say I'm kinda impressed with the location. Within 20 minutes walk, I had found the Riestag, Brandenburg gate, the Tiergarten and the Sinti Roma memorial. Not too bad for a days work. I've booked a walking tour for tomorrow so hopefully I will be able to explain these sites to you a little better. What I can say is the Sinti Roma memorial was quite sad. Its a dedication to the million
gypsies who were killed in WW2. A glass wall explains the events of what happened to these people before and during the war. Behind the glass wall is a garden with a pond in the middle. The water is black. I don't know what they do to it to make it so. In the middle of the pond is s triangular stone with a flower on it. Google tells me the flower is replaced everyday.
After these little adventures I went out for dinner. Whilst enjoying my variation of chicken parma, there was some kind of protest going on. I have no idea what it was about but judging by there placards it has something to do with the Ukraine. It wasn't a large group but they were very loud. I guess that supports the theory, if your going to yell at someone, do it German. So much more intimidating. After the protesters had moved on I read my book, finished my blog from yesterday. Came home with the intention of writing this blog and fell asleep instead. Sorry. More exciting stuff tomorrow
