I was up reasonably early this morning to catch my train to Prague. My train was at at 9.01 and this is Germany, when they say 9.01, what they mean is 9.01. My train was quite old, it had compartments. I haven't been on a train like that in eons. I was sharing a compartment with a lovely older Scottish couple and a very nice older german couple who were quite happy to chat until they realised we couldn't understand a word they were saying.
The countryside on the way up was as expected, beautiful. Although for the longest time we were travelling through a heavy mist. I now suspect it wasn't mist but, clouds, although I didn't notice any mountains, but then the mist was very thick. I was beginning to fear that the promised sunny day was not going to happen but as we travelled into the Czech Republic the mist cleared and a beautiful sunny day appeared.
Here is a fun fact, they don't use Euros in the Czech Republic. Something I might have known if I'd done more research than place to visit and accommodation options. At one point there was a young czech girl
in our compartment (after the nice germans had departed) She brought a ticket off the conductor (for a connecting service) and I noticed, she handed over a note that was definitely not a Euro. I had not planned for that. There was no wifi on this train so in order to research the issue I had to turn the cellular data on in my phone. Turns out they use the Koruna. I wonder what that 30 seconds of research is going to cost me in international data charges.
I was also very touched to receive a call from my big brother Bernie along the way. This man never calls me when I'm home in Oz. In fact he rarely calls anyone in the family (typical Aussie male) I believe he may have had a few frothies after work, and he thought he might check in on his little sis. I was confused for a while, but very touched.
I arived at the Prague train station, found an ATM and pulled out some Koruna's and went in search of a taxi rank. That took longer than anticipated. The cab took me to my host's place, however he wasn't there. He had
mentioned he might have family staying but if need be he could put me up at his sisters place. He was supposed to let me know one way or the other. He was waiting for me at the sisters apartment, which he kinda forgot to send me the address. No matter, we found each other and the sisters apartment was only a short walk away. And its cool. My hosts name is George and if I were 10 years younger that boy would be in a lot of trouble. Damn he is cute!
By the time I got settled it was after 5 and the sun was shining so time to go exploring. A short walk down the street is Charles bridge. The bridge has two huge gatehouses at each end and all along the bridge are statues, mostly religious stuff but still impressive. The views from the river were gorgeous. By about 6.30 I was starving and it was time to go seek out some dinner. George had recommended a place just off the main drag, down a few alleys. He said it might be a little tricky to find. He clearly does not know about Melbourne's alleys, I
found it no problem. George made a good recommendation. Its a cute little place next to a canal, with a huge water wheel. I'm quite impressed. I think I'm going to like Prague.
