Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Salzweg September 14th 2012

Our flights to Greece departed from Munich airport so it made sense to spend our last night of this leg of our journey somewhere in Germany, not far from the airport. We chose Salzweger Hof in the small town of Salzweg. We enjoyed a lovely scenic drive through the countryside and the small towns on the way from Vienna to Salzweg. Our accommodation at Salweger Hof was serviceable and we would recommend it, including the restaurant where we enjoyed a pleasant meal. The most noticeable thing on the drive to the airport was the juxtaposition of lovely small towns surrounded by lush pastures and the massive BMW factories. We stopped for a quick bite to eat at one of these small towns and it was clear that the town was geared to service the needs of ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna September 13th 2012

It was well after lunch by the time we got underway to Vienna and we were both relieved that the Garmin worked faultlessly. The Gally Apartment was clean, serviceable and almost comfortable! We had no issues with Mr Gally despite warnings from others on the “Tripadvisor” website and, in fact, we found him helpful. His advice was always perfunctory but covered the requirements and answered our questions about where to find a post office or a doctor. We have stayed in some dodgy locations, but this was the first one (that we know about) where there is a brothel in the same street. Fortunately no one was peddling their wares on the street so, apart from the neon sign, it was relatively discreet. The rest of our travelling day and the following morning were spent organising ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague September 9th 2012

We headed for Prague with step-by-step directions downloaded from Google and saved onto the computer. This worked well but it was not as relaxing as following the Garmin’s timely instructions. Also, the consequence of a wrong turn would be more time consuming and stressful! Luckily the Garmin service centre was near a motorway exit and we found our way there. The technician agreed the unit needed to be replaced but he was not able to do this because the business was only an authorised agent. However, he managed to reboot and reload the Garmin and we were soon on our way. We would have been much happier with a replacement because we were left wondering when the next failure would happen! We arrived at our accommodation, the Green Apartment, and found a rather narrow but free ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Olomouc Region » Olomouc September 5th 2012

For the drive to Olomouc, we decided to take the highways for the first part of the journey then turn off the highway and program the Garmin to take us over secondary roads. This meant we could see more of Poland and the Czech countryside. All was going to plan as we travelled through the small towns in Poland getting nearer to the border. We took a detour to look at a local site and we turned the Garmin off while we had a look at a local mansion house. When we returned to the car and tried to turn the Garmin on, nothing happened. Ohhh... heck! The back-of-beyond in Poland with no map! We decided to carry on until we found a town with wifi. We soon crossed the border into the Czech Republic where ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków September 4th 2012

We left Levoča on an overcast day and headed to the pretty town of Kežmarok, a medieval walled town. Just as it started to rain, we left and headed towards the Tatra Mountains. We had a good view of them from Slovakia but they were shrouded in mist by the time we reached Poland. We stopped at the touristy town of Zakopane. It reminded me of Queenstown but without the view!! It probably had wonderful mountain views but we were not able to see them because of the cloud. After a good look around, Eileen purchased her sister a present then we were soon on our way. I felt relieved when we departed the crowded and touristy town and glad that we had decided not to stay there. We arrived at Apart Hostel in Krakόw at ... read more

Europe » Slovakia » Presov Region » Levoca August 31st 2012

We made an early start to Slovakia as Eileen had set the alarm to get through the shower early. We decided to breakfast along the way. We stopped at a small town remembering our pleasant experience in Slovenia. The local bar was open so we wandered in to find the local men having their breakfast - beer. The bar did not serve food. We noted that beer was a popular breakfast choice throughout the country – also to be enjoyed at morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and with dinner. We tried another town for breakfast and ended up buying some forgettable food at a minimarket. A little further on, we bought some delicious peaches at a road side stall. Another thing that struck us on our first encounter with Slovakia is that the roads are flanked ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest August 29th 2012

We left Ljubljana just on lunch time deciding to get some distance behind us before we stopped for lunch. We stopped at random at the town of Turnišče. We had a bowl of soup each, two mains (I had turkey, while Eileen had bratwurst) a 500ml beer and glass of wine for 11 Euro. Our waiter Davorin with his semi Mohawk haircut was very helpful talking us through the menu. The pumpkin seed oil dressing on the salad was ‘yum’. If you are passing this nice restaurant, Gostilna Varašanec, it is well worth a visit. You can’t miss it, just stop at the sandwich board with chalk writing. We decided to do the “Hop on Hop off” bus in Budapest as it is a big city and the attractions are well spread out. This worked out ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Upper Carniola » Ljubljana August 26th 2012

We had drizzly rain in Ljubljana so we decided to head out of town to Bled. Bled is a very beautiful lakeside town. There is a church on an island in the middle of the lake and a small castle set on a cliff high above the lake. When we arrived in the town the rain eased so we had a walk on the lake edge. We then drove up the hill to view the castle but it was raining 'cats and dogs' so we retreated to town for hot drinks. Eileen’s saga of hot chocolate drinks continued. This time we had a problem we had never struck before – the drink was toooo chocolatey! That’s right, it was melted chocolate in a cup and you needed a spoon to eat it! My coffee was ordinary. ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Slovenian Littoral » Bovec August 25th 2012

We chugged through the outer suburbs of the industrial end of Verona following the Garmin’s instructions to the motorway. The Italian motorway has a speed limit of 130kph so we were soon whisking our way towards Ljubljana in Slovenia. Motorway driving was fairly boring but efficient so we covered 220kms in quick time. We chose to enter Slovenia via the adventure town of Soča so this meant getting off the motorway. The Garmin led us onto increasingly narrow roads and through little Italian villages. We stopped on the edge of a pretty village by a stream to eat the lunch Eileen had prepared earlier. I was wondering if this was really the road to Slovenia and would we be able to enter or be turned back by a dead end! We continued on the road, virtually ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Verona August 24th 2012

We visited Lake Como for lunch. Wow, what a pretty spot! Afternoon tea was an ice cream at Lecco a very beautiful lakeside town. Give me a job here and a home overlooking the lake – heaven indeed, but no offers so in the car and on to Verona. I had not heard of Verona before this trip, but it is famous and picture postcard beautiful. We passed through and walked alongside the substantial city walls to the main piazza. We passed the Anfiteatro Arena (Roman Amphitheatre) where the opera Carmen was playing. A delightful pizza at a restaurant recommended as “non-touristica” was lovely. After dinner we ambled through town enjoying the ambience. We stayed at B&B Casanova and would recommend it but for a couple of issues; the air-conditioning unit was ineffective, and there was ... read more
