Who said travel was easy? The scene starts with an overnight flight from Barbados to Frankfurt where you are served dinner at 11 pm local time and breakfast at 2.30 am. You get off the flight at 4.30am but it is 10.30am local time. Feeling fresh (I wish) you find the correct rental car counter only to have drama – “No, you cannot go to Croatia.” “But on our form, it says we can go!” Debating with three levels of management later, they will let us take a Mondeo station wagon to Croatia, but not the car we booked, or the offered VW Jetta. Much debate later and a calming word from Eileen (who was ‘bag sitting’ for the duration), we take the VW and kiss goodbye to Croatia. Only an hour late, we get out ... read more

It was with much anticipation that I flew into Barbados; the exotic land of my great grandfather, as much a family legend as a reality. To my knowledge I was the first family member to return in the over 100 years since his arrival in New Zealand. I never knew my great grandfather; he was gone long before I was born. Memories of my grandfather and his two unmarried sisters were my closest link. It seems to me I have more in contrast than commonality; my grandfather was short while I am tall, he was dark while I have very pale skin, he was fleet of foot and a great sportsman while I only have enthusiasm but no ability, he worked with his hands as a carpenter while I have to be content tapping at a ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Jamaica » Kingston August 3rd 2012

Some things just have a way of working out. While we were in South America we made the decision not to go to the USA, despite it being on the original ‘rough itinerary’. However, our itinerary changed and we sailed to Panama. After some investigation, it became clear that we needed to travel through USA to get to Barbados otherwise we would have to ‘retrace our steps’. So it was decided; some fun in Florida first, then a short stopover in Jamaica to enhance our Caribbean experience before arriving in ‘must do’ Barbados. Our Caribbean experience was most definitely enhanced by our visit to Jamaica where we met the happiest and friendliest people on our journey so far – Jamaicans. We arrived very tired from the USA and we were glad of our choice to pay ... read more

We made our way to Fort Lauderdale the day before our USA departure. After we arrived at our hotel, we had time to saunter along the main street and take in the atmosphere before heading to the beach. The beach was very crowded with families, couples, groups of young men playing ball sports, groups of young women watching the young men, joggers, and people walking their dogs. We spotted lots of square roped-off areas in the sand and so we went to investigate the small signs attached. They turned out to be turtle nests which had been marked so they would not be disturbed. Coming from New Zealand with all our regulations and conservation efforts, it seemed strange to us that these people could be trusted to respect the turtles’ space. Eileen decided to relax and ... read more

We made an early start to Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Eileen and I started with the Incredible Hulk roller coaster, a huge and fast thrilling ride. There was more than a little trepidation for Eileen because she had never ridden a roller coaster before. Afterwards she said that she kept her eyes closed for most of the ride because it was the only way she could cope. Her son Blair refused to believe that she had done it because when he was 11 he remembered her screaming on a log flume ride at Disneyland! The only thing he could remember her enjoying was the Tea Cup ride. As the day wore on, the queues got longer and longer. In a day we got through all the key rides but wish that we had purchased a “fast ... read more

On the trip from Key West to Orlando we headed inland to see some different scenery. We purchased some mangos directly from an orchard. They grew 40 different varieties of mango so we took the advice of the owner’s son and purchased some Southern Blush mangos. They were simply superb! Our GPS showed our route as tracking alongside a large lake, Lake Okeechobee. Unfortunately we could not see it from the road as there was a substantial stop bank erected all round the lake. We were able to drive up onto the stop bank by the lake exit and enjoy the view where we watched a crane at the water's edge. We then travelled through an area of massive sugar cane farms. The canes and the tracks through them seemed to go on just about as ... read more

Wahoo! I am back behind the wheel of a car – even if they drive on the wrong side of the road. Our first big road trip of the vacation was down to Key West. Luckily Alamo Car Rentals had upgraded us to a Camry; comfy on long straight US roads. Wow, what a drive, cruising on the highway at 70 – 80 mph. The trip from Miami to Key West has a spectacular series of bridges and Islands. In Key West we tried “lime pie”, looked at Ernest Hemmingway’s house, and the southernmost point of continental USA. This claim seemed somewhat dubious to me because we were on an island. We had dinner at a local institution, “Sloppy Joe’s”, where the live band played some great tunes. While eating dinner, we witnessed two middle aged ... read more

Wow, ten nights in the USA! We landed in Miami and stayed at the beach where I enjoyed the swimming. The sea was lovely and warm with none of the difficulty of getting into the water past your ‘goolies’ which you experience in New Zealand. The surf was very broken but I was able to do a bit of body surfing. We visited South Beach to window shop, to purchase a GPS unit, and to ‘people watch’. While Eileen was consulting the map to find the Post Office, she accidentally walked into a passing woman. This was how we met the mature and slightly eccentric Marie Clare. Eileen describes her as “a very charming, beautiful, full of ‘joie de vivre’, resident French woman”. Marie Clare spoke several languages and she said she had been a translator ... read more

Hot, hot, and hot! We arrived at our hostel hot and sticky after six days at sea and a six and a half hour journey from the boat. Needless to say we were looking forward to a shower and some air conditioning. We followed the staff member to our allotted room dragging our bags up two flights of stairs then down another set. She showed us into our small, dark and hot 'sweat box', aka 'our room', where we were told the air conditioning would not be turned on until 9pm. 9pm is long after the mosquitoes have dinner! This was the point at which I 'lost the plot’. The heat, tiredness and hunger got the better of me and I begged and begged to be taken home. Leigh calmly suggested I take a shower to ... read more

10 July 2012 began with a couple of unexpected challenges. First there was the heated argument over the phone with the hostel owner about the last minute hidden insurance and tax charges. These were not mentioned in the “balance to pay” email we received and so were a complete surprise when we were settling the bill. It ended with the arrogant owner admitting “this happens a lot and other people pay” then he declared that he had Leigh’s credit card number and so he could easily deduct the disputed amount. An unfortunate end to a lovely stay! The next challenge proved to be changing our Colombian dollars into US dollars in order to pay the balance of our yacht fare. Leigh walked for an hour in the heat and visited four banks to discover each had ... read more
