This post was written by Robert Maw & Jessie Jay Jeremy and Rhianne's family went on an excursion to Dunnottar Castle early in the morning, before everyone else was even awake. The rest of the group had an early breakfast at 9 AM and then the rest of the morning was free. After lunch at the hub we boarded the bus right away at 1 PM. Everyone caught up on some sleep during our long drive to the castle where we met up with the Whittaker family and Jeremy. The walk up towards the castle was spectacular, and the views were amazing, we tried to make the most out of the short amount of time we had. Within that time, we took multiple photos to send to our sponsors - Roots and Parks Canada. Once we ... read more

Events as it tranpsired by Spencer: The day started off with an early wake up call at 7:00 am with Mr. Cupid knocking on my door, speaking in Spanish, "Buenos dias señor!". He knocks until I answer my door. "Wakey wakey" and then asks "chicken or fish?". I reply "chicken". He then asks, "white bread or whole wheat?". I'm trying to eat healthy so reply "whole wheat". He will remain at my door asking me questions until I give him eye to eye contact to let him be certain that I'm awake. After having breakfast at 7am, we went back to our rooms, got changed and boarded the bus at 9:30 with our yellow TASSO shirts and blazers in hand. We arrived at Hawkhill House, a private nursing home, with mature trees surrounded by lush gardens ... read more

Today we left right after breakfast and made our way down to the Music Hall where we set up the pans and had a dress rehearsal. We then came back to the residence around noon, had lunch, and some free time to relax and hang out. We then boarded the bus at 4 o'clock and went back to the Music Hall to work on a collaboration with the other groups that were performing that night. We had dinner and then we got ready to go on stage as we were the opening act. Today we had a free day. Yippee!! After a bit of housecleaning and room inspection, all the musicians walked downtown to go shopping, while simultaneously, a Macallam Distillery Tour was organized for 18 of our chaperones/adults. A private coach picked up the adults and off they went to drink scotch. After two hours of free time shopping downtown, the young musicians decided to take in a movie, Inside Out. On our way back to Hillhead we stopped for dinner along the beach front, then we had a 45 minute walk back to our residence. It was a long day, and everybody passed out as soon as they got back.... read more

Today we did a bus tour up to Inverness to visit the infamous Loch Ness monster. It was just over 100 miles away so the bus ride was quite lengthy. However, the band members took this opportunity to enjoy the scenic rolling hills, while others caught up on some sleep. We stopped on the way to pick up lunch and then continued our journey to Inverness. Once we arrived, the band members ran off the bus with excitement. Simultaneously, Salmon stayed behind to host a workshop at the Lemon Tree with the locals in Aberdeen. We were very fortunate that some were able to catch a sight of the Loch Ness monster. The boat ride was all fun, as even the youngest band members had a chance to take the wheel and steer the boat down ... read more

Today we all dressed in our Canada gear, as it was the opening ceremony. There were 14 other countries participating in the festival. This year there are three Canadian groups, including a fiddler group from Victoria, BC and a marimba group. It was a well presented ceremony. They spoke a little bit about each musical group, going over their history, and in our case they spoke of our past visits to the Aberdeen International Youth Musical Festival. There are groups from the United States, Spain, Russia, Mexico, Finland, Germany, Belgium and South Africa to name a few. After the ceremony was over, we ate our packed lunch and proceeded to the Union Terrace Gardens. We participated in a workshop with a local street drumming group from Scotland, the TNT group. Performing in the Terrace Gardens was ... read more

Today we had our first performance and it was a fantastic one. We had a packed audience and it was a shared performance with Canadian fiddlers and a dance company from Australia. It was a high intensity show altogether. TASSO did the closing act and at the end of the concert we did a collaboration with the two other groups. We altered our song, Viva La Vida by Coldplay, so that we were accompanied by the fiddlers and the dancers. It turned out fabulous. Around 4pm, we had a dress rehearsal. Before the performance, the group split up, with 8 members taking a festival minivan to load the truck and the rest of the group taking the coach bus. It was a late night for us, as at 11pm we were on our way back to ... read more

We had a fantastic flight and arrived in Edinburgh after a small delay trying to find one of our group members' bags. We cleared border crossing and were reunited and welcomed by the Crooks family in the arrivals area. After a small stop for a quick breakfast snack at the airport cafeteria, we met with the our coach driver, Peter, and our journey to Aberdeen continued. It was a three hour bus ride. Band members took the opportunity to catch up on missed sleep. We then arrived at the university (HUB), where we were once again reunited with more Toronto All Star Steel Orchestra (TASSO) family. Those families flew ahead, in some cases, three or four days in advance. We then met our courier/tour guide who will be with us for the duration of our trip. ... read more
