TASSO is 22 hours away from home, jet lagged, and sleep deprived. But this not the day to be tired. Starting with a very early morning, the band boarded the bus with two sets of uniforms in hand in preparation for a day of performances. By 10am, the pans were set up outdoors at Darling Harbour where TASSO was scheduled to play in front of the Australian Maritime Museum. The weather was beautiful, bright and clear. The sun reflected off the pans, making us feel as if we were gleaming for the audience. The Darling Harbour performance was a longer set than usual, enabling us to play many of our favourite songs from the repertoire. The band would use this performance as an opportunity to warm up a bit before the evening's adjudged show at the ... read more

What an amazing day this was for TASSO! It started with a band meeting in the lobby of our Ibis hotel, under the slightly overcast skies of Australia's comparatively mild (by Canadian standards) and wonderful winter. Once oriented, TASSO as a group went on a guided tour of the historic Rocks district down by the Harbour and learned about Australia's fascinating history as a former penal colony. After the tour, everyone walked around to sight-see on their own. The beautiful architecture and quaint coffee shops, the art galleries and unique boutiques- there was so much to admire. Free to have lunch on our own, several of us went as a group to a true gem of the neighbourhood offering exquisite Italian food. With full bellies and the growing excitement of what the evening would soon offer, ... read more

Around 8:30 in the morning, TASSO assembled in the hotel lobby to enjoy a wonderful breakfast together. Each member of the group wandered in groggily from their rooms but we're soon jolted awake by the familial energy and the taste of good food. A crucial band meeting soon followed and then the band dispersed to collect their belongings and prepare for the day. At 10am we together boarded the chartered bus for a brief ride to the Pitt Street shopping mall on the heart of Sydney's CBD district. The beautiful and big stores proved tantalizing to members of the group, especially those with shopping on their minds. But our able tour guide, Katie, soon redirected our attention to the purpose of our excursion: a trip up the Sydney Tower. While not as tall as our own ... read more

Today, TASSO got up in the morning at around 8 o'clock and had a band meeting before heading as a group to the world-famous Taronga zoo. When we arrived, Mr. Cupid joked that zoo should keep at least half of the band members for a new exhibit called "The creatures behind the pan." We didn't take it personally. The zoo was a blast! TASSO saw kangaroos, wallabies, red pandas, zebras, Indian elephants, koala bears, performing seals, lions, tigers, lemurs, a Tasmanian Devil with amazingly large teeth, and most rare, a platypus. Australia is home to the world's deadliest snakes and spiders. We saw them too, safely behind glass. The band members grabbed snacks and lunch at the zoo using the AC Conversion cards brought to them by corporate sponsor, CIBC. Thanks CIB'Free! In the afternoon TASSO ... read more

Our day started bright and early with a breakfast provided by our centrally located Ibis hotel. After breakfast we assembled for a band meeting and then had a free morning to do as we pleased. The J-boys and many others went to the local free outdoor sports courts and played basketball, soccer, worked out. Later they and others went on a long walk to explore Sydney. Some parents took the time to go shopping and visit the lush Botanical Gardens where their ears were filled with the beautiful sounds of the local birds. After this lovely period of free time, band members rushed back to the hotel where there was a short meeting and a rehearsal. Without access to the pans, band members sang their parts in harmony in preparation for the performance later that night, ... read more

Sydney welcomes TASSO! We have arrived after what feels like a two-day flight across the globe. Once we cleared Customs, we reunited with Ben Tepper and his family, and also with Maeve Ellis. Both arrived before us. We then collected our luggage, met our tour guide, Catie, and our coach driver, David. Our day began with an orientation tour of Sydney. What a beautiful city! Along the way, we picked up the J-boys and their family, and went to have lunch down at Bondi Beach. This is where we also reunited with Sebastien and his family. Although it is winter here, the beach was full of people surfing, swimming, and just enjoying the sun. The temperature was 20C-plus! If this is winter we'll take it. After lunch we checked into our ibis hotel at around 2:00 ... read more

We got up at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast and left at 8:30. We made our way down to His Majesty's Theatre where we had our first dress rehearsal at 9:30 a.m., and then we rehearsed the finale with other chosen participants. The festival chose one of our songs, Viva la Vida, as the closing finale piece. We had lunch at noon, and then we got ready for our matinee performance, which was at 1:30 p.m. TASSO was also fortunate to be asked to play the final piece of the night, Mambo Caliente, where Jaymes and Nestor performed their solos. It was a fantastic experience! We repeated the program again, for an evening performance at 7:30 p.m. This time it was a bit dramatic, as just before the curtain went up one of our senior band members, ... read more

We had breakfast from 7-9 AM this day. Salmon left at 8:30 for a directors meeting as the festival decided who is playing for the finale tomorrow and what to play. The rest of us had a free morning, did laundry, etc. we then went to the hub for a hot lunch and after lunch we left at 1PM to head for Kemnay. WE all got the Kemnay in time for our technical rehearsal at 2 PM. We all put our uniforms in the green room in which time we learned that the truck carrying our pans had a flat tire on route which delayed everything by 2 1/2 hours. Jack, our tour guide, spoke to the owner of the local fish and chips restaurant and he agreed that if we bought Mars bars at the ... read more
