Thursday, 30 October, 2008 Pat went off and had breakfast. We were up at a reasonable time and when Pat returned from breakfast we loaded the car. We then paid our bill and set off about ten o'clock. We guessed theHotel was run by a family and they were very personal in their customer care. The chef asking us what we wanted for dinner was charming. The plan for today was to drive to Venice and if we made good time, to try and see something of the city, before going to the accommodation. The motorway was kind to us and although there was an almost continuous stream of lorries, the traffic got a little lighter once we had got away from Verona. The drive was about one hundred kilometers and took about an hour and ... read more

Monday, 27th October, 2008 We had to be out of the chalet at nine o'clock, so had to set an alarm for the first time in a long time. We where up, had the car packed, and Pat cleaned the chalet, by the time the guy arrived and was happy enough to give us our deposit back. We had decided that we would take the motorway, but stop off at Menton on the way to Imperia, as we had plenty of time. At Menton we headed for the centre and found the underground car park. This one had classical music. We came out directly onto the beach from the car park, which couldn't have been better. Menton was a really nice place and has none of the pretensions of some of it's near neighbours. A long ... read more

Europe October 26th 2008

Sunday, 26th October, 2008. The plan for today, is to prepare for our departure tomorrow. We spoke to our respective families, and caught up with the latest home information. It was a good job in one respect, because Pat's mother reminded us about the clocks changing, we wouldn't have had a clue. Especially as we had not planned to go anywhere today. Pat caught up with the washing, I spent a little time on the internet, but the connection here through the Holiday camp is dreadful and keeps dropping out. Pat's childhood ambition to be a hairdresser is being realised, as she now cuts my hair with the trimmer set we bought, and keeps me looking tidy. We sat out for most of the day as the weather was absolutely gorgeous, not a cloud in the ... read more

Saturday 5th October, 2008 The plan for today was to head for Villefranche sur Mer. We set off fairly late about twelveish and decided to go the quick route via the toll motorway. It didn't take long and we were through Nice and heading along the coast road for Villefranche sur Mer. We decided to do the Villa Ephrussi first, which is heading out towards St Jean Cap Ferrat. Parking was directly outside the villa and for a change fairly simple to find. We used our discount booklet to get our one Euro reduction! The Villa was built about 1912, by Beatrice Ephrussi, who was born a Rothschild and married a Russian banker Mr Maurice Ephrussi. So she was wealthy to start with, a gained a small fortune, when he died. She bought 17 acres of ... read more

Friday, 24th October, 2008 At one stage last night I was wondering what day it was, as I was drifting off to sleep. I have to say that I didn't know, and it took me quite a while to figure it out. The only way I could do it was by knowing that we arrived here on Monday, and I then had to try and figure out what we had done since then each day and add the days on. Eventually, I got there but only by checking this morning was I really certain. What, I am trying to tell you is that my general concept of time is no longer as important as it was. My life was ruled by a watch for many, many years. When I stopped working, I stopped wearing a watch ... read more

Wednesday, 22nd October, 2008 Four weeks have now gone by. Planning for an easy day. Catching up with some washing, maybe some swimming. Pat bought some bread and croissants, from the little shop. I had a freshly baked, still warm, pain au chocolat, brought to me in bed. It was really good, with some coffee. We did as planned. Not much. The weather wasn't quite as nice as it has been, overcast, but still about 20°C. We popped along to the covered pool late in the morning, but it wasn't that hot so didn't stay long. I bought some internet time and updated the blog. This technology business is incredible. We had a bit of everything for lunch again, pate, cheese, ham, fresh bread, olives and fruit. Pat caught up with some washing and I had ... read more

Monday 20 October, 2008 This particular Premiere Classe was slightly different from the normal style on the outside, but the rooms themselves, much the same. We ended up with a good sized room, because of the shape of the Hotel. Also with a view of the sea and the airport, much better than the usual industrial estate. We left the Premiere Classe about 1030, and headed off towards Nice. We are cruising the French Riviera and of course, are now on the Cote D'Azur. We passed through Nice, the coast road is extremely busy. It is three or four lanes of traffic both ways and just seems to be constant. The French driving is up to it's usual standards, with the mopeds and motorbikes darting in and out of the traffic. Then through Villefranche sur Mer, ... read more

Sunday Evening About five o'clock ish we decided to go for a walk and find some dinner. We walked along the Nice promenade, Florida Beach and everyone else was also out promenading. The runners, the cyclists, the skaters, the dog walkers and the nosey people (us). We walked for well over an hour on this stretch of beach and eventually found a restaurant to our liking, La Cascade, an Italian food place, Pat had a spaghetti carbonara, and I had a Pizza, with tomato, onions, cheese and olives. Very nice. We hiked back at quite a pace and got back about quarter past eight. The plan for tomorrow, is to find something to do in the morning, maybe more Nice, Villefranche sur Mer or Beaulieu sur Mer. Stock up on supermarket supplies, as we will be ... read more

Saturday continued Pat cooked and prepared our purchases from this morning. Chicken with a sauce and some pasta. Two chocolate cakes for desserts. We have decided that, we would like to still be in the area for a while, the weather being great has a lot to do with it, of course. So, our plan for the moment is to travel to Nice, we have a night booked in the Premiere Classe, tomorrow night. Along the way, we will pass Cannes and Antibes, and a place called Villeneuve Loubet Plage, where we have information, that there are a number of Holiday villages, with mobile homes and chalets, that are still open; some open all year. The idea being to try to find some reasonably priced accommodation for a few nights, and settle again for a few ... read more
