Sunday Night. We decided to enjoy the McDonald's next door, two Royal Cheeses. The place was really busy. Monday, 6th October, 2008. Raining again. The plan for today is Longly to Nemours. We had had an early night to give ourselves a good start for the day, as we were planning on driving about 300 kilometers. We completed the journey via the toll motorways and I have to say they are a delight to drive. We stopped off at a Motorway area and had a Ham & Cheese baguette, with coffees as a snack. Most of the journey was at about 80 mph, much faster than we have been traveling. We had planned on a bit of a back track because one of the aims behind the overall trip was to visit Fontainebleau, because Pat had ... read more

Saturday continued We relaxed for a while then headed off for Dinner, took a walk into the Town Centre, found a few Bars, but nothing Restaurant looking. We had noticed a place next to the Hotel so decided to eat there. We had the buffet starter, then a Chicken in Tandoori sauce and the local Pork Haggisy type thing, good value, average food. Not sure if I have explained the Hotels we stay in. Premiere Classe are a chain of 217 Hotels that range throughout France, they cost about 40 Euro's per night, and they are more or less the same at each location. They are clean, have free internet connections, and you can book online very easily, and they have automatic check-ins. You do get what you pay for, in that they are basic, but ... read more

Friday 3rd October 2008 continued After settling into the Hotel, we decided to go for a wander to find something to eat. The Campanille was handy but very busy, and on the way back there was an emergency going on with Fire & Police attending some gas being released at high pressure and we were only allowed to go back to the Hotel, so as we had had a good lunch anyway, we just ate some biscuits stashed for just this purpose. The night was pretty disturbed with lots of comings and goings and shouting outside the rooms in the early hours, but we slept fairly well. Saturday 4th October, 2008. The plan for today was to get from Chalons to Longwy, via Verdun. We set off about our usual time, and I used the next ... read more

Europe » France » Champagne-Ardenne » Epernay October 3rd 2008

Thursday continued We had dinner at The Hippopotamus, next door, a little pricey, but nice food, A Steak and a prawns, kebab, spring roll thingy. I don't remember hearing one car horn beep at us today. We take it in turns on a daily basis to do the driving. I don't think I really mentioned it before, but I was underwhelmed by Reims, I had expected much more to be made of the Champagne business, but it was hardly even mentioned in the Tourist Information. Friday, 3 October, 2008 The plan today is to travel from Reims to Chalons En Champagne, via Epernay. Overall, We have decided that as neither of us has been to Luxembourg, that we will give it a look, as we are heading in that general direction, so we will go via ... read more

Europe » France » Champagne-Ardenne » Reims October 2nd 2008

Thursday 2 October 2008 Plan was to go across country quickly from Compiegne to Reims. Set off about 1000 ish, the route was due east, but we missed a turn from our planned route, which was really good for me because we ended up driving along the Chemin des Dames, which is an area the French fought heavily. We found a French Military cemetery at Ambleny, can't tell you much about it as there was no information around. However, it as a big one containing several thousand, I would guess, you will get an idea from the picture. An expression came to me, “Fields of Graves” and I know it's not a pleasant one, but it is somewhat sadly expressive of the countryside. Driving along the Chemin des Dames, we had the road mainly to ourselves, ... read more

Tuesday 1st October, 2008 The plan today was to move from Saint Quentin to Compiegne. The journey was a little longer than we have been completing, we filled up with petrol first thing, only our second time since arriving. Drove through all the minor roads, which we prefer to do, you get to see the sights that way, rather than just hammering along the main roads. Stopped at a French Military Cemetery at Cambronne-Les- Ribecourt 2100+ mainly second world war. Laid out in circles, very few flowers. Our first planned stop was the Chateau de Compiegne, which Pat had found in the guide books. A Royal / Imperial Palace. We arrived when it was closed for lunch, so popped across the road to Les Accordialles, the Madame was very much in charge of the place and ... read more

Tuesday 30 September 2008 A rainy day in France - sadly. Anyway, the plan was to visit Amiens Town, then Peronne, then American Memorial at Bony and then on to Saint Quentin. Found our way into Ameins and a town centre underground car park, we are definetly getting better at the driving and finding our way around. We only had one car beep at us today. We had a quick coffee at the first place we came to, Le Carlton. Strolled around the town for a short while, found the tourist office, for the city map etc. It was drizzling so we had a walk around the Amiens Cathedral, for a while. A beautiful piece of architecture and not small. It wasn't completely destroyed during the war, but nearly. We walked around for a while longer, ... read more

Monday, 29th September, 2008 Wow, what a day. Woke up and got moving quite early for us. Left, Bethune with a heading of Amiens, with a planned stop at Thiepval. We had booked our next night in a Premiere Classe in Amiens, so this was our destination for the day. Popped into a supermarket for bits and pieces. Visited The Notre Dame De Lorette, French cemetery, truly massive, containing 40,051. I may have said it before, but a photograph does not convey the sheer size of some of these cemeteries, with the grave markers stretching off into the distance, this place was big. Stopped at the local Estaminet and had a coffee, the place is filled with Trench Art and memorabilia. The little dog continually tries to get your attention to play with his toys, very ... read more

Europe » France » Nord-Pas de Calais » Arras September 28th 2008

Sunday 28th September, 2008 Not an early start to the day as we woke up about 10 o'clock. The sun is shining again! and the weather is great, the air is a little cold but, certainly T-Shirt weather. A gentle drive heading towards Arras, was the plan for the day. We stopped the Cabaret Rouge British Cemetery containing approx 8,000, another beautifully kept and picturesque site. This was the cemetery from which the Canadians, removed an unknown Canadian soldier, to be re-interred in their Unknown Soldier memorial in Ottowa. We visited the Vimy Ridge trench system in the park bequeathed to the Canadians after the war, by the French. This has been kept more or less preserved, as it was when the war ended. The parallel running of the trenches and the size of No Man's ... read more

Saturday, 27th September, 2008 Left Ieper this morning, with a general heading of Bethune. Around lunchtime we stopped at a supermarket and had a coffee. Passed by many War Cemeteries and stopped at four - Trois Arbres Cemetery 1705 Burials Le Grand Beaumart Cemetery 552 Burials Vieille Chapelle New Military Cemetery ? Several hundred Zelobes Indian Cemetery 105 Burials Paid our respects at each of them and signed the visitors book when found. This really took up most of the morning and we arrived at the Bethune Premier Classe approximately 2 o'clock. We used the automated reception, which was impressive and very easy to use. Because the weather was so nice, we chilled for a while on the benches outside the Hotel and caught up with emails etc. The temperature registered as 39°C on my Clock ... read more
