Saturday, 18th October, 2008 The plan for today is to complete the part of the loop, that we didn't complete today. The day wasn't quite as nice as yesterday, but still lovely. We started at the supermarket to get our lunch and dinner. Then headed clockwise on our loop, through Saint Tropez and south down the coast, then back due north to the apartment. We stopped off at the Pampelonne beach and saw the Club 55, where apparently the celebs go. Didn't seem a big deal, but we only saw the outside. The wind was coming straight in off the sea, and it wasn't cold, but it wasn't warm either. So we pootled around to the same beach we were at yesterday, Gigaro. On the way, a signpost for Cap Camarat, was on the road, so ... read more

Thursday continued We had a peaceful evening sat outside, 20°C, a lovely balmy evening again. Pat cooked some pasta and mince beef with a basquaise sauce. Grapes and biscuits for dessert. Friday 17th October, 2008 The plan for today, is to drive in a loop from here westwards, popping to the supermarket first, the road will take us initially inland, then round the coast to see the pampelonne beach where all the celebrities hang out at the private beaches, then up to St Tropez and back to the apartment. Swimming costumes packed just in case! We headed off eventually late morning and made the first stop at the Geant Casino Supermarket, for our lunch and dinner, and other sundry items. Stopped for a coffee and sat outside, in the sunshine for a few minutes, because we ... read more

Thursday 16th October, 2008. The plan for today, a walk. We decided that we would try to stay out of the car today, if we could. A lazy morning started the day and I managed to get access to the internet, and caught up with publishing the blog and some email correspondence. Spotted a spiders web, sparkling in the sunshine and tried to photograph it. Eventually we set off for a walk in the general direction of Cogolin Town. We started by walking around the back of the apartment complex to see what there was of the pine forest. But after walking a while, we backtracked as we weren't sure if it was really heading anywhere. Therefore, down the hill and left / west. The road was a fairly busy A Road, but we managed to ... read more

Tuesday 14th October, 2008 I have received an email from the owner of the shop in Ypres, The British Grenadier Bookshop, who very kindly said he would try to find out further information about the headstamp on the Trench Art, that I was given, from his reference books. “Here is what the book says... 8mm Lebel ART-D case made in the 3rd quarter of 19?? (you crossed out the number on the right side at the 3 o'clock position) by Atelier de fabrication de Vincennes. Metal case by Compagnie Francais des Metauz, Serifontaine.” The number at the 3 o'clock position is a little unclear but looks like two numbers and the first is definitely a 1. The number next to it is a little worn but if I had to make a guess might be another ... read more

Sunday night continued On our return to the room, we conducted some further internet surfing, to try and find some rented holiday accommodation in the area. We found about five sites we liked, dotted all around the place, in a website called, Owners Direct. We sent a message to each of the five of them asking if they had availability for a few days. Later on we received a message back from owners who have a place not far from St Tropez, and we went for it, should confirm details later today. The plan for today is to leave Avignon and travel to Salon en Provence, something like 80 kilometers. We initially headed back up the road to Orange, as we had stopped at a large Carrefour supermarket on the way down to Avignon on Saturday ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Avignon October 12th 2008

Sunday 12 October, 2008 The plan for today was to look around Avignon. We had a bit of a lay-in and finally got moving about 1130. Shorts and T-Shirt weather again. The traffic compared to yesterday was very light. We initially headed for the park & ride, which we did find this time, but it seemed empty. It also had some travelling people and a circus on the site, so I wasn't going to leave the car there. We headed back into the centre and found the Oratorie underground car park again. One thing I keep forgetting to mention, in these underground car parks in France they play classical music, it is very pleasant. We headed off for the Tourist information and picked up various leaflets, about the city and local area. We were near the ... read more

Saturday, 11th October, 2008. The plan for today is Les Tourettes / Montelimar to Avignon, nothing in particular planned for the actual journey, which is probably about 90 kilometers. We booked ourselves in the Premiere Classe Avignon Nord, for Saturday and Sunday nights, so we can explore Avignon and the Provence region. We left about 1030, the initial drive was just a steady one, along mainly dual and single carriageways. We stopped at a Carrefour supermarket, for our usual picnic lunch and picked up a couple of other supplies, that we were getting low on. We managed to sit outside in T-Shirts in the sunshine to drink our coffee's at the supermarket cafe, because the sun was shining. Thinking as we went along we decided that as Avignon was fast approaching, and we were following alongside ... read more

Wednesday night This Premiere Classe has been refurbished recently, but the rooms are bigger and the bathroom has a shower with a bath to collect the water. Through preference I love to soak in the bath, so with a little ingenuity, because there was no plug, I managed to have a bath, my first for two weeks. We went next door to the Campanille for dinner, pasta chicken and chicken with a mushroom source, and two buffet desserts. Good food, very tasty. Still raining. Thursday, 9th October, 2008. Grey, but dry out. Plan for today, from Macon to Born En Bresse/ Viriat which is about 40 kms as the crow flies, via a tour of the countryside. There are a couple of things locally that we are hoping to find, but our next accommodation is very ... read more

Tuesday Night Went to the other next door restaurant, Grillade de Courtepaille, there are apparently about two hundred throughout France, two dry ham starters and a Pork and a Steak. We were greeted very warmly and as soon as they realised we were English were offered appropriate menus. Found out that Bien Ciut is well done, which is my choice for steak. Would recommend the restaurant, if you are a meat eater. Not cheap, though good food. Tomorrow will be two weeks since our arrival in France and Nemours is probably about a third of the way down. Once we have completed our journey tomorrow, we will be about three fifths down. We have another short term plan to cover us for the next few days. On the map, to the south east of Macon we ... read more

Monday night. Next door was a restaurant called Grilpiz, we had two set menus €12.50 each. A spaghetti carbonara and chicken on Skewer. Tuesday, 7th October, 2008. Well the rain seems to be following us, looks damp out. The plan for today is to look around Fontainebleau. Pat wasn't feeling 100% so we had a slow start to the day. We went to the local supermarket and stocked up on few sundry items. Then off into Fontainebleau, and found the town centre underground car park. Off on foot, we found the first nice cafe and had deux grand cremes, our usual. This and some croissants and tuna sandwich, we bought round the corner started our day off. Pat was feeling much better by now. We went to the Tourist office but of course it was closed ... read more
