Our center cabin room is arranged with our feet pointing toward the bow as we lie in bed. The TV makes the perfect portal giving us a forward view when we set it to the bow camera; which we do before turning in (setting the elevator music accompanying this view to “mute” of course). We were still in port when we went to bed. Around midnight we seemed to still be in port, our forward Warnemunde port view had not changed, the lights of other boats docked in port had not moved. Still later, it seemed that we had not moved, and were still in port. We were supposed to be underway by 10:00 pm for sure; because, the casino was scheduled to open at midnight The next morning we awoke, having set our clocks ahead ... read more

Back when the Cold War was raging and JFK came to the town divided by a wall and announced, “Ich bin ein Berliner” we all knew what he meant, claiming that our spirit was with theirs. The translation however was closer to “I am a jelly donut.” We arrived in Warnemunde and had a long day ahead of us. But Sharon decided to jettison me and make me take the one-way three hour train ride to Berlin alone. The Showroom was packed when I arrived. I received a “D” for my train car, and a Yellow-8 sticker for my bus once I get to Berlin. I had trouble seeing what my sticker was, since I couldn’t look at Sharon’s and she wasn’t there to look at mine. I got a seat by a window on the ... read more

Europe September 5th 2017

We went up to the Lido for breakfast, and today I chose two sandwiches, and this really seemed to irritate Sharon. They’re quite good, nice crunchy baguette roll, roast beef, some lettuce… yummm! Maybe it’s the crunch roll that’s bothering her because she can’t handle it! Still she chided, “Sandwiches are lunch.” But they can be pretty good at breakfast too. Sharon had a waffle. We were on the “Best of Copenhagen” tour which first stopped at “The Little Mermaid”. This is a bronze statue coated in a blue-green weathered patina and seated on a rock in the water, near the edge. Most people were commenting, “I never realized that she was sooo small.” Our guide told us that she was a life-size mermaid. We got on the bus after our ten minute photo stop; only ... read more

Sharon was up early, showered and dressed, when I noted in the “Where and When” that mass wasn’t happening until 4:30PM. Sharon thought I was kidding. “That can’t be right, This is a SEA DAY!” But her face fell when she snatched the daily epistle from me. I’m thinking, I’m going to have grumpy girl ALL DAY! We had to wait until 8AM for the dining room to open for breakfast. I got the vegetarian mushroom and spinach eggs Benedict; but, I added two sausage patties and two hashed browns to the mix. Sharon had her All American Breakfast with scrambled eggs and bacon. We assembled in the Queen’s Lounge for Bingo, and Sharon emphasized that it was my turn to buy the Bingo Cards despite my paying for the last two Bingo Sessions. Okay, maybe ... read more

It was an early morning breakfast in the Lido. Over the PA it was announced that our arrival would be a bit later than planned this morning, due to the overnight helicopter “air rescue” expediting a patient’s transfer to shore during the night. We met some people who were awakened by the helicopter; so, I guess that that is one benefit of having an interior cabin! There are 450 fellow passengers continuing on into the Baltic; but, for most of those that we’ve shared this past week voyage with, they are disembarking today. Their suitcases are all ashore by now, and departing groups are being announced over the PA. There is a lot about the Koningsdam to like as I reflect over our first week on board. The rooms are very well designed and seem to ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » North Sea September 2nd 2017

I decided to splurge on breakfast and had fried eggs and sausage Sharon had scrambled eggs and toast , again eating in the Lido because the dining room wasn’t open that early. It was a beautiful day on the North Sea, and in the distance we could see and endless array of oil rigs at sea that just seemed to follow us south. It was pretty early in the morning for Team Trivia, especially for a non-scenic-viewing sea day! What’s with this 9:00AM anyway. Then Christina told us that people often ask for Trivia on the last sea day but her schedule is so full she can only do it a 9. There was only one other team present. Christina wanted to know “Who painted ‘The Scream’”? The answer was Munch. And Steve knew who the ... read more

We’re falling into a pattern with a simple quick breakfast in the Lido, and we showed up in the Showroom for our fairly early departure for a fairly long tour: A seven and one-half hour driving marathon by bus, through tunnels, across fjords by ferry, where we would explore parts of the Hardanger Fjord farther from a couple of our ports of call earlier this week. We got on our Number 4 bus and we began our journey to the Hardanger Fjord. Our guide pointed out something that I guess that we hadn’t really noticed before, about the color of many of the houses and farms and buildings in the fjord, and the reason for it. Originally, wood would be treated with tar to preserve it during the harsh winters and rainy damp weather. This naturally ... read more

We had a simple light egg-free breakfast in the Lido. We’d plan to meet and join our Trivia Teammates as we were taking the same tour today. We’d confirmed where they like to sit in the Showroom waiting for the tours to depart. However, today Geiranger was a “Tender Port” for us. The Koningsdam policy for tender ports is to sticker everyone coming into the showroom for tours; rather, when they exit and we were early and wound up with #4 stickers and our friends had #5 stickers. Tendering went very smoothly and we found that you’re much less likely to bump your head on a Koningsdam tender/lifeboat than you are on the other DAM ships. We got on our bus and then began our journey up the winding road to a viewpoint almost one mile ... read more

Europe » Norway » Western Norway » Ålesund August 30th 2017

We seem to be getting into our groove, starting with breakfast in the Lido. I got two of the demitasse cups of Swiss Muesli and some rolls, cold cuts and cheese for my “Continental Breakfast”. Sharon is sticking with French Toast because it’s not a “Waffle Day”. Alesund is the main island of a group comprising a region of islands. James Arness has grandparents who emigrated from this area, and during his hey-day on Gunsmoke visited Alesund a couple of times. Since the 1980’s, following the discovery of North Sea Oil, tunnels began connecting many of the islands. The seabed and terrain encasing the tunnels is solid rock. A few bridges also connect some islands; but, this can limit access through the waterways for ships like the Koningsdam. The longest undersea tunnel that we went through ... read more

We began today with breakfast in the Lido. I got an egg dish with assorted veggies, a couple of rolls and a couple of chocolate milks. Sharon got her usual waffle, despite heading on a tour called “Waffles and Waterfalls.” We assembled in the Showroom and they were going over all of the “Need to Know” info for first-timers. This was our first port of call, so there might be some who don’t know to take your room key/ship’s ID with you, along with a government issued photo ID. Our Group Orange-13 was the next to leave, and two busses were required. Our elderly tour guide was an elderly Norwegian woman with a heavy accent, and occasionally I needed to revisit her uniquely parsed syllables. My favorite was the way she referred to the people living ... read more
