“Exit Applause!” as Barry from Boston is fond of saying; or, as another of our favorite piano bar stars (Jeremey from our Mediterranean Cruise in 2015) would say, “We Have NEW People!” But for us, this marks the half-way point of our cruise. Nineteen days are in the books (and blogs) and now we start the bittersweet journey towards home. In nineteen more days we will be back in Boston (and Las Vegas). ** Sigh ** I must commend the cabin steward though. He has left us dark chocolate every evening on this past first leg except for two. And you know what that means: More chocolate for me! I’m surprised that Sharon didn’t say something last night. She was in the room when they came to make it up. They left that evenings chocolate, and ... read more

We were largely unaware of our passage into Rotterdam until we saw the skyline out our cabin window. We needed to be ready to go on our windmill tour. We wondered if these would be the same windmills that we saw when we visited Amsterdam last year; but, this would prove to be a much different venue. I got my cold-cut sandwich again for breakfast and some chocolate milk; and, Sharon was sticking with nibbling on some toast, potato cakes and chocolate croissants. This port-day in Rotterdam will see the crew again do a complete top-to-bottom deep cleaning of the ship and hopefully we will remain free of new cases for 48 hours after embarking from Rotterdam with some new passengers. Back in the cabin I’m getting ready to head up to the Showroom and Sharon ... read more

Yesterday we got our laundry back. First, we got back the laundry we’d put out two days earlier; which, then had Sharon concerned since she was missing her second pair of jeans. Later we also got the load that we’d put out before that (which included Sharon’s missing jeans); so, it does appear that the extra washing imposed on the laundry for all the linens being cleaned is delaying this service. Our first load was already going to be late, so they saw to it that the second was delivered on time; or, so it seems. I had to use my favorite Trivia T-Shirt as an undershirt in the morning, the one that says, “I don’t need Google, My wife knows everything!” So, it was nice to have regular clothes again. There is no mass this ... read more

One look out of our cabin window told us that the sun was not shining in Eidfjord. Sharon felt just a little guilty about telling Duncan and Pam “what a wonderful” time we’d had when we’d done the “Waffles and Waterfall” tour on our last visit to Eidfjord. The waterfall is quite spectacular, and on our visit to see it the sun was shining so we had a great view; but, as for the hype about the Norwegian Waffles, somebody has a really sick sense of humor to tout these as something that you should think about spending good money to try. Upon arriving at the mountaintop café that served these monstrosities you walked into a room in which the plates are covered with waffles that are too big for the plate they’re being served on, ... read more

We needed to set an alarm to ensure that we’re able to make it to the Showroom by 7:20AM for our tour assembly. We slept all that we could before making it to the Lido. There it was all too apparent that we are still in a “Code Red” situation. This is no way to start a cruise, especially a longer cruise. We’d heard that the crew would be doing another complete scrub down today, just as they had done our first day in Reykjavik. There were crewmen at each sanitation station and at the handwashing machine to make sure that people used them. I was a bit surprised going out to the pool deck to see that the place settings were once again on those tables, all wrapped in the orange cloth napkins. There were ... read more

The plan had been to get up and to work on the blog for a couple of hours before it would be time for Sharon to scurry off to mass. Well, that was the plan! Instead, I awake to Sharon saying, “Well, it’s about time that you opened your eyes! I’m off to mass.” Okay, so I’m naively thinking that there will be plenty of time to get caught up. I do manage to meet Sharon after mass near the Hudson Room on the Upper Promenade; but, I just barely got there before the “Go in Peace. Mass is Ended.” We’d tried to talk to the Future Cruise Assistant yesterday; but, only managed to get a reservation for today at 9:45AM. So, we only had a bit of time to grab some breakfast in the Lido. ... read more

I had to give Sharon a “Thirty-Minute Warning” as the time for mass approached. I had gotten up early to write the blog. It didn’t look like she was going to budge; but, once she started moving, there was no stopping her. I must have been “in the zone” because I was still typing when she returned, and I still hadn’t showered yet. So now I needed to get moving. The morning was not all that full of idle time. There were important things to do, such as: putting the laundry away, filling a new bag with laundry, eating breakfast, doing Sudoku, attending a lecture… all before having lunch. And you know what the nice thing about this on a cruise ship? Somebody else brings you the finished laundry, somebody else does the laundry, somebody else ... read more

I don’t know about others, but I was looking forward to enjoying the warm soothing waters of the Blue Lagoon after yesterday’s belabored walking. It wasn’t that the walk should have been tiring; but, for me it was. It’s bad enough to have the chronic problem with my heel, which at least is being addressed with better arch supports, but I have two toes on one foot that hurts, ankles that seem to like to lock up and knees that seem like they sometimes won’t support me. My legs try to compensate for all of these afflictions, and it makes them very tired in the process. Perhaps today I will get some relief. I awake to Sharon telling me that I will be on my own today. She decided to stay back and enjoy some quiet ... read more

I wasn’t feeling all that chipper to start our first day in Iceland, and no doubt my upset stomach was due to far too many glasses of wine the previous evening. Sharon got me one of her peppermint Tums after I returned from the shower; and, that did seem to help. I probably should have taken one last night. Temperatures were warmer than Greenland with the possibility of showers. Sharon had booked us on a “Golden Circle” private tour with about a dozen other people. Duncan and Pam were also booked on this same tour. A hard roll sandwich is becoming “go-to” choice for tour early tour days; and, Sharon was happy to get another large chocolate croissant with her toast and potatoes. This morning I opted for two of their small chocolate milks to wash ... read more

Today is one of our “Catch-Up” Sea Days; but, it seams that we are pretty much on schedule posting blogs for the previous day. We sort of slept in; since, even though it is a Sea Day, Sharon doesn’t need to rush off to mass on this Saturday morning. She’ll be going to the Vigil Mass at 5:00PM and she won’t need to go tomorrow; and, that’s a good thing because tomorrow is a very busy day for us, with an All-Day tour. We’ll be in Reykjavik and we’ll be staying overnight. We barely made it to the Rotterdam Dining Room before they stopped serving breakfast at 9:30AM. Another couple was already seated by the window at our table for four. And evidently, they’d already ordered as well. I ordered Eggs Benedict (again) with hashed browns ... read more
