Greenland checked off a new country visited for both of us. Today, we do some scenic cruising through Prince Christian Sound (ice bergs permitting) and on to Iceland (another new country for me). All of us have pondered the unique relationship between these two islands: How Greenland has more ice than Iceland; and, Iceland has more green than Greenland. The captain had promised some beautiful photo opportunities, provided of course that the weather allows us to navigate the sound; and, there are no rogue icebergs that block our passage. We learned that a sound is a waterway that has two (or more) openings to the open sea. The weather seemed to be threatening fog all night. Duncan had conceded that one of the disadvantages of having a cabin on the Navigation Deck is that you get ... read more

North America » Greenland » South Greenland » Qaqortoq July 26th 2018

Today we are blessed with a sunny and clear day in Qaqortoq (cchhah-ka-tocchh). The “Q” is a sound that is supposed to be produced at the back of your throat, not dissimilar to the clicking sound some cultures use in their speech; but, which is foreign to most Americans. I could see the sun filtering in our stateroom window as I worked on the blog. I was enjoying one of my two dark chocolate candies left by our cabin steward. Our steward has been most generous on this leg of our journey, and has left milk chocolate only once. You see, Sharon gets the milk chocolate candies; while, I get the dark chocolate ones. I’m fully expecting Sharon to leave the cabin steward a note, something to the extent, “Please, no more Dark Chocolate.” But she ... read more

Our crossing towards Greenland took us across stormy icy seas. An iceberg was spotted and reported by the captain on our approach to Paamiut. Actually, the captain noted that this was our second (and final) approach to Paamiut. Initially, we had a spare two hours baked into our schedule due to our earlier than anticipated departure from Labrador. One look out of our stateroom window found the seas dancing unmercifully, and we had felt the ship rolling and yawing throughout the night. At dinner the previous evening it was apparent that the “Early Rush” had turned into a “Tardy Dribble”. One at our table reported that his wife was back in the cabin still trying to get her sea legs under her. Others were also preferring to remain in their cabin and the convenience of immediate ... read more

Some people don’t like sea days. It’s a good thing that we do. For one thing, it gives us a chance to catch our breath instead of going on a tour day after day to the point that it becomes a grind. And also, like yesterday, we found ourselves with an unscheduled sea day. We’ve been on cruises where fellow passengers would insist that if they missed a port it was due to some sinister plot by HAL to keep them on board to buy more things in their onboard stores; or, just to ruin their vacations! That doesn’t seem to be the case on Voyage of the Vikings where the norm is to be a 4-star or 5-star mariner and there seems to be an appreciation that the captain’s primary focus is our safety. And ... read more

We received an EXC tour update for our tour in Red Bay the next morning; and, it seems that they decided that we would need to be ready one hour earlier than we had planned. This meant that we would need to set the alarm; which, in turn meant that I would need to make sure that my phone had the correct local time. I hadn’t bothered to adjust my phone for the one-half hour that we lost in Newfoundland and Labrador required the same half-zone setting. Back in the day when this province had been separate countries from Canada they had used the sun to determine noon local time. This was needed to have a consistent and accurate time reference for train schedules. When they did become part of Canada there was no effort to ... read more

Our arrival in Newfoundland saw sunny days again shining on us. “Newfoundland” has always been an awkward word for me, not sure how it should be pronounced; yet, having heard it pronounced so many ways. As it turns out, almost any way will do. A few days back the guest lecturer talked about just this subject in his presentation of the fossil record in which he’d done much research in Newfoundland. You can sound out each letter New-Found-Land. You can put the emphasis pretty much where you want. The more common pronunciation is more in the line of NEW-fn-lin; but new-FN-lin and new-fn-LIN work just as well. However, locals may take some umbrage with New-Fn-Lun. The speaker noted that with his distinctive Scottish brogue he is prone to the faux pas and after his speaking apologized ... read more

We were late getting up and Sharon went by her phone for the time, and it hadn’t been set forward to Atlantic Time. We were a bit rushed and headed for the Lido to catch a quick bite. I allowed myself a poppy seed hard roll and made myself a cold-cut and cheese sandwich. Sharon grabbed a couple of potato cakes and a chocolate croissant; but, this one looked really wimpy. It was back to the cabin, grab the camera and off to the pier; except that there was a huge line in the hall of the Dolphin Deck… and everyone was wearing jackets and rain gear. Here we are dressed for a balmy day in Las Vegas in short sleeves. What’s wrong with this picture? Somebody mentioned, “It’s pouring outside.” Sharon had checked the weather ... read more

Sharon went off to mass and I finished up the blog. This had all the markings of one of those lazy days at sea that would let us catch up on everything; but, looks can be deceiving. Nonetheless, it started out that way. We took our breakfast in the dining room. I thought the menu had changed; but, it was just the color and presentation. I got a frittata and muesli, and maybe I went off diet a little with two of the hash brown cakes and two sausages. I really have been good though by forgoing the bread and rolls at meals. This frittata seemed to be more of a fried egg white than I remember them as being, and the bowl of muesli was much bigger than I remember; although, it only had one ... read more

North America » United States » Maine » Bar Harbor July 19th 2018

Sun was filtering in our cabin window letting us know that we needed to get ready for our first tour day. We were still approaching Bar Harbor while I began working on yesterday’s blog. Sharon was getting ready for mass. After she left for mass I got a phone call in the cabin, and somewhat bemused, I wondered “Who could be calling me?” Of course, I knew it must be Sharon. She asks, “Where’s mass?” I tell her and promise to meet her at The Hudson Room to go up to the Lido for breakfast. Up in the Lido we’re forced to settle for an outside table. I got an omelet which I seem to have developed a taste for after a few days in Boston. It was entertaining watching the chef flip the omelets over ... read more

We awoke early again with the realization that this was the day that we’d been anticipating. Today we begin our cruise. Ruth had wished us a most enjoyable journey yesterday when we had the opportunity to visit with her in her home in Rhode Island. Sharon had mentioned to her how we’d met our previous Trivia Team at the Life Boat Drill; but, for this cruise I had made her sign-up for the roll call so that we could join a trivia team with some Canadians. If you can’t have school teachers on your team, then the next best thing are team members from Canada, Great Britain or Australia. Ruth has also played trivia; but, said that she sometimes takes umbrage with some of the questions and answers. One that particularly irked her was spawned by ... read more
