For sleeping in a place where the lights never go out, we actually slept quite well. We went to the dining room at the agreed upon time, involving a long walk across the foot bridge from the dormitory for breakfast. We sat down with Mike who was busy chowing down on his hot breakfast with coffee. He says he needs the coffee to stay awake, and we didn’t see anything wrong with that. I got an over-sized chocolate chip cookie and a Dr. Pepper; and, shared the cookie with Sharon. We’ve pretty much noticed two things about the diet of Alaskans: They love their chocolate chip cookies and the love Dr. Pepper. Both are found in abundance just about everywhere we’ve gone. We needed to be on the road at 7:15AM sharp, and Mike had made ... read more

Today is the day we get to journey north on the roadway featured on one of Sharon’s favorite programs: Ice Road Truckers… not! (She hates the show and can’t understand why I ever watched it) The difference is, the Dalton Highway should not be covered in ice this time of year. We got something light to eat, not wanting to chow down on a big meal before starting out on what will surely be a long day on the road. We’d gotten the telephone number of a taxi company from the driver who rescued us when the lodge van broke down. We were told he’d be here in fifteen minutes. Sharon was getting worried when nobody had shown up after twenty minutes. I called back; but, was having trouble getting through. We tried Sharon’s phone, and ... read more

After a night of little rest and even less sleep I awoke with Sharon declaring “Eureka”! I thought that she’d discovered the motherload in Fairbanks; but, perhaps just as good, she’d found the Pike’s Waterfront Lodge and they had a room for us tonight. Our tour at Gold Dredge Number 8 had been moved back to 10:30AM so we were in no rush this morning; still, we wasted no time going out to breakfast. We used GoogleMaps to find the nearest Denny’s, and as it turned out, it was just around the corner where we discovered that this was the northernmost Denny’s. It was not particularly busy on this Thursday morning, and we had a seat by the window. I chose my normal eggs over medium breakfast; but, with jalapeno bacon breakfast, and it did have ... read more

We had signed up for a private 4-Seasons van ride from Alyeska to Anchorage to catch the train to Fairbanks on the elevated dome car for scenic viewing and with meals included (breakfast, lunch and dinner to Fairbanks). 4-Seasons was the company that we had tried to contact to take us out to Alyeska; but, that driver never showed up. We were hoping that this driver would show up; and, that nothing would be held against us for giving up on that other driver. This driver was early and so we avoided the many anxieties one might otherwise happen when you get bogged down thinking “what if we miss the train”. The driver noted that it was high tide and we kept our eyes peeled in the event that we might sight a beluga whale; but, ... read more

The morning dawned and again we were facing the possibility of inclement weather accompanying us onto Prince William Sound. Before you wonder how today’s Prince William got his name attached to a sound in Alaska, chill for a second. This Prince William was the third son of King George III. We had big hopes that this boating tour would be as photographically productive as our previous visit here during our first trip to Alaska about six years ago. We’re just hoping that we’ll be able to take the pictures of gleeful otters at play in the water or massive walls of ice falling to the sea; and, that they won’t be missed due to people being oblivious to others trying to take a picture. On our whale watching outings there had been multiple cases of people ... read more

We woke with a day of leisure on our hands. Our plans were to take the cable car up about half a mile and check out the surroundings. The area just finished hosting a three-day music festival with wonderful weather where you could see for miles; so, the pit-a-pat of rain drops outside our window was not a welcome sound, nor were the clouds that seemed to shroud the mountain outside our window. But we were in no rush and we hoped that things would clear up; if not, we’d just lounge around the resort. Sharon wondered what all of the wooden bench-boxes were for outside the many rooms, and our room was at the very end of a meandering hall with a couple of bends and lined with many, many bench boxes; but, this time ... read more

We got our wake-up call at 5:30AM with our disembarkation scheduled for 7:15 in “Wave 3”. This is a departure from previous exits from HAL ships where luggage off-load tags were called (for example, our bags were tagged with BLACK-1). This time each wave included several types of tags and colors that were on your disembarkation instructions but they only called the wave. I just got some rolls/croissants to eat with some cheese and cold-cuts. Sharon got a couple waffles. We went back to our cabin and waited as first Wave 1 was offloaded, followed by Wave 2. We pulled our carry-ons with us as we went down to Deck 2 to exit the ship for one final time (at least for now) when they called Wave 3. The cruise director Jordan was there to say ... read more

This final full sailing day of our cruise falls on Saturday; and, the scheduled morning mass as is typical for a sea day was moved to the late afternoon slot to serve as a “legitimate vigil mass”. The priest had offered cruisers the relief of counting the morning mass (if they hadn’t been able to change the time slot) as a vigil mass, which counts as Sunday attendance which would otherwise be impossible for the many disembarking and travelling on Sunday. It was however necessary to move the mass from the larger Wajang Theatre to the smaller Hudson Room. Sharon underscored for me that the “color of the day” was red, and obligingly I selected my red polo shirt and, yes Erin, my “red hat”. Although, I’m not sure that Sharon exactly had “that” in mind. ... read more

We started the day up in the Lido: Fried eggs and bangers for me and French Toast for Sharon. This will be Sharon’s third visit to Glacier Bay, involving a day of scenic cruising in this Ranger hosted maritime visit to the large national park; and, for her it looks like the third time is the charm. Her previous visits here, including one with me two years ago, have been plagued by fog and inclement weather. I checked on the way back to our cabin after breakfast; but, was correct in my suspicion that no Sudoku puzzles were available in the library. Sharon went out on the Lower Promenade to take pictures where I briefly joined her before returning to the cabin to add an additional layer and the fetch the binoculars. The wind was up ... read more

Just past the halfway point of this cruise, we felt entitled to sleeping in. With the blackout drape closed no daylight filters in from the morning sun. As I write this, it is already the next day, and I just had one of those Ground Hog Day moments as the elevator carpeting reminded me that it is still “Thursday”, the same day that we arrived in Skagway. It’s déjà vu all over again. I urged Sharon to go to the dining room for breakfast because I wanted the spinach/mushroom eggs benedict. Sharon was fine having French Toast. I picked up the “Times Digest” upon entering the dining room, a paper that provides a synopsis of what’s going on in the world, and there are often flavors for different nationalities (such as a Canadian edition), mainly to ... read more
