Terrible beginning to the trip, in that I had set the alarm for 5:30 am but somehow managed not to switch it on properly. We awake in a panic at 6:34 for a pickup by my son at 6:45. No time even to eat. The wife and I are not on speaking terms by the time we leave the house at 7:20. The previous evening I had done the online check-in for our West Jet flight. For reasons that were mysterious at the time, the system would only allow me to complete the check-in for myself, not for Vi. When we arrive at the airport, we find that Vi has apparently been chosen at random for a comprehensive security check throughout the entire process. Bad news? No, because once we hit the very long security screening ... read more

God, does 3 am ever come early! We meet our traveling companions in the lobby. There is a bag breakfast for each of us, which we gulp down on the way to the airport. Interesting to see the lack of traffic at this hour, since Bangkok's highways have always been jampacked before. Our flight is from Bangkok to Tokyo Narita airport, a nine-hour haul on airline ANA. Little leg room, and I am seated behind a guy who insists on reclining (even after I politely explain the situation to him) and who constantly wiggles and bounces on my two patellas. Thankfully, we have a spare seat in our group of three where I can extend my legs. Otherwise I would have had to move seats. We have to undergo security checks once again in Tokyo, a ... read more

This morning we leave paradise. It's sad, because we were just starting to know the names of several of the resort staff and a little bit about them. They are all incredibly cheerful and eager to help. In Thailand, people serving you put their two hands together as if praying and give you a little bow. And the staff here does this every single time they encounter you. Very sweet. I hope they do not think of us only as rich Americans. Bouncy 45-minute ride to the airport. We have a better chance to see the Koh Samui airport this morning. It's actually really interesting, because it's completely al fresco, a sprawling series of interconnected buildings with roofs but no walls. Once you pass security, you're divided from the non-secure outside by a small moat. The ... read more

I sleep like a baby and awake a new man. What a relief, after feeling so lousy for the past few days. Today is another wasted day, and our last day in paradise. Four of our group arrange an excursion to a waterfall, but we hear from them later that the trek through the jungle is difficult and the temperatures unbearable, so they don't even make it to their destination. One couple goes shopping for the afternoon. For the rest of us, it's beach life. Even though I make an effort to stay out of the sun as much as possible, I still manage to pick up a burn on my shoulders and back. We are very close to the equator here, and so the sun literally is closer and hotter. Unprotected skin burns in a ... read more

Another bad night for me, unfortunately. I am experiencing intestinal cramps about every 20-30 minutes, so I get no real sleep. I'm also keeping Violet awake. Halfway through the night, we decide that enough is enough and it's time to bring out the big guns: our just-in-case antibiotics. Hopefully they will get me back on track. It's a big jam-packed day of doing nothing. We spend the morning on the beach. I'm feeling wiped from lack of sleep and spend the entire afternoon sleeping back at our room. Everyone else just takes it easy. We all get together for supper on the beach. Tonight it's a beach BBQ buffet. The grill yields pork bellies, beef strips, barracuda, sea bass, and other yummy stuff. I'm feeling much better and greatly enjoy the meal. Another day in paradise ... read more

I don't sleep well, unfortunately. I don't understand what has got my insides all knotted up, but it's damned uncomfortable. Somewhat better come morning. I am able to eat some breakfast. The plan for today is to visit a tourist area known as Fishermen's Village. It turns out the the cheapest way to get there is to take the free shuttle to Chaweng, then another free shuttle from there to Fishermen's Village. This works out well for me, since I missed Chaweng yesterday. Chaweng is how I described it yesterday: lovely beach, over-commercialized shopping district. We have a couple of hours to kill, so we eat lunch at Tropical Murphy's, an "authentic Irish pub." It's silly, but the burgers, fries and potato skins really taste good. The couples go their separate ways for shopping. Violet "wants ... read more

Unfortunately, this is a bad day for me. Presumably, either something I ate last night is disagreeing with my system or I have managed to pick up a bug, but I pass a rough night and this morning I feel terrible. I cannot even eat breakfast. Everyone else is fine, so it's a mystery what's affecting me. The plan was for a day trip to Chaweng, the main town on the island and also the location of one the major public beaches. I go through the motions of preparing to go along with the group, but at the last minute I bail, because a bumpy 30-minute ride is not compatible with my current condition. So the gang goes off without me, and I spend the rest of the day curled in a fetal position in our ... read more

We awake in paradise. The view from the back patio of our room, which faces inward to one of the pools, is idyllic. We enjoy a leisurely buffet breakfast with a huge variety of choices (even ice cream!). Hmm, this is going to be a short blog entry. Here's what we did the rest of the day–nothing, with a capital N. We spent the day almost entirely on the resort's small but lovely beach. The ocean is very calm here because we are in a sheltered bay. We swim in both the ocean and the large infinity pool that meanders around the resort, passing under many bridges. We actually enjoy the pool more, because even though it's bath-water warm, it is, incredibly, cooler than the ocean. One of our party spends most of the afternoon sculpting ... read more

We have another blessed opportunity to sleep in. Then it's breakfast and repack. We will store one bag at our Bangkok hotel and retrieve it on our way back. The eight of us who are Koh Samui-bound are the last to leave the hotel at 12:30 for the airport. Koh Samui is an island off the east coast of the Thailand peninsula that juts south into the Indian Ocean. (The bottom bit of the peninsula belongs to Malaysia; that's where Kuala Lumpur and Singapore are.) Koh Samui is a vaguely square island close to 230 sq k in size, with a permanent population of about 63,000 and many times that number in tourists. It is wholly devoted to tourism. Much of the coastline consists of white-sand beach, all of which belongs to a resort or one ... read more

Up early, because we have a busy itinerary today. Breakfast at hotel, which features a nice spread that includes creamy scrambled eggs and "Canadian bacon", which we haven't see before on this trip, We head west out of Bangkok on the bus. Much of the trip is reminiscent of the 401: 4 lanes of traffic on each side, plus collector lanes. Speeds, too, are approaching 100 km/hr. We notice that many of the buses and transport trucks are garishly painted, either in traditional Thai patterns or in western-influenced themes. The land is getting progressively flatter. We are entering on of Thailand's main agricultural districts. At a rest stop, we are amazed by the giant pumelos for sale, the size of basketballs. We enter the town of Damnoen Saduak. This city is crisscrossed by canals, which Wat ... read more
