We wake up to a drenched world. It has rained torrents overnight. This morning we are supposed to visit My Son, an ancient Cham religious site that was lost in the jungle for centuries before being rediscovered by the French. I was really looking forward to this excursion, but we find out after breakfast that the rains have caused flooding in that area and the site is basically under water. A disappointment, but travel itineraries are never guaranteed. Some of our group opt for for various alternative activities and tours, but Violet and I decide to spend the morning laying low, recuperating, and (for me) working on the accursed blog. About 11:00, we check out of our rooms and say goodbye to the resort, a most attractive location. We load everything on the bus and head ... read more

Wow, what a full day! Let's get started. First, a note on the weather. As you have probably gathered, while temperatures have been suffocatingly hot here in southern Vietnam, in terms of precipitation the weather has been good, with only brief spots of rain. Today, however, we awake to angry, overcast skies. Buffet breakfast at the resort and then we are off on the bus to explore Hoi An, considered one of the jewels of Vietnam's cultural heritage. The unique combination of Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese influences in the old town have earned it a UNESCO heritage site designation. Hoi An's survival was a result of several factors. First, it used to be a major port, but the river gradually silted over and the town literally became a backwater. Second, its proximity to Danang during the ... read more

Today marks one week into our trip. Back home, it's Remembrance Day and we think about how this particular occasion holds special significance in light of recent events. After breakfast at the hotel, we check out, board the bus and bide farewell to Hue. We are returning to the Danang area, but this time we are taking the Hai Van Pass through the Truong Son Mountains rather than the tunnel we took on the outbound trip. After negotiating some fairly steep climbs, we split off from the main highway. For the first time in Vietnam, we are briefly on a road with no traffic. Then we get into some serious climbing. The road is narrow, twisty and steep. Before the tunnel through the mountain was opened, this was the only road between South and North Vietnam ... read more

Breakfast at the hotel and on the bus. We are in Hue, the ancient capital of Vietnam and one of its most important historical areas. The basic look and feel of the city is similar to Saigon, perhaps slightly more dilapidated. I would guess that there are more bicycles, even though they are still outnumbered by motorbikes. One interesting difference is the presence of many older buildings that are still in use, some from the colonial French period, some from the 19th-century Mang dynasty, and some even older. It is fascinating to see a relatively modern construction standing right next to a stone building right out of Indiana Jones. As we leave the city and climb into the surrounding hills, we have a view of the broad Perfume River that flows through Hue to the sea. ... read more

Today will primarily be a travelling day. We are up early at 6 in order to catch a taste of the Cai Be floating market, which opens at 3 am. This occurs daily in the same location that we visited briefly the day before. The same boat and driver transports us there, about a 10-minute trip. This is a wholesale market, where transactions are in bulk. Each vendor ship places examples of what they are selling on a high pole, so that the buyers in smaller boats can move about and negotiate prices. We see sacks of sweet potatoes and bananas changing hands. On one boat, we spy a cock fight in progress, although A.J. says that that activity is officially banned. We approach a small boat crammed with a variety of fresh fruit. Some of ... read more

After breakfast, we check out of the hotel. We have repacked so that we can live out of one carry-on for tonight. On the bus and we are off to the Mekong Delta, about 3 hours SE of Saigon. It's a long drive down Highway 1, the main road that stretches the length of Vietnam. We use the opportunity to observe ordinary life in progress as we drive by. There are countless shops and businesses right lining the highway. There's nowhere to park, so clearly the target clientele is motorcyclists. As I've noted before, everyday activities often spill out onto the sidewalk and even the road. It's rare to see someone sitting at a table. More commonly one squats or sits on a low stool. We see people engaged in everything from preparing food to fixing ... read more

After breakfast at the hotel, we are off to Cu Chi to visit the underground city that developed there during the Vietnam war. It is a beautiful day–already 30ºC and very humid, with a bright blue sky speckled by clouds. As our bus glides through the ocean of motorbikes, we take in the Saigon atmosphere. The basic building style in the city is a narrow building of from 2 to 8 storeys, stacked tightly together. There are endless rows of these units along Saigon streets. Typically, the ground floor is a shop of some kind, and the upper levels are homes or apartments. As in the market we visited yesterday, the shops tend to cluster by type; so, for example, there will be a series of furniture stores, then a group of women's clothing stores, and ... read more

Up at 6:30, much refreshed. Breakfast at hotel; very nice mixture of Vietnamese, Chinese and western food. Fresh fruit is fantastic. A.J. and Kien deliver a briefing in the lobby at 8:15 and we are on our way at 8:30 for a full-day tour of Saigon. As the bus struggles through the morning traffic, we get close-up views of the endless flow of motorbikes. A.J. mentions that the country counts some 13 million motorbikes, the most per capita in the world. (Vietnam's total population is 90 million.) The first contrast I notice with China is that most motorcyclists are wearing helmets. Kien tells me that helmets are mandated by law. Weirdly, children are exempt, so we see kids perched on the handbars or the cargo without helmets (shudder). The helmets range from regular motorcycle helmets to ... read more

After a plane hop from Ottawa to Toronto, we board a 777 for a direct flight to Hong Kong. Interestingly, our route is eastward instead of westward, a great circle passing over Greenland, Siberia and China on the way to Hong Kong. We have opted for "premium" economy seating, which places us behind a bulkhead with blessed extra leg room. The disadvantage is that one's floor space becomes a passageway for other passengers wanting to move from one corridor to the other. The flight is long (12 hours) but uneventful. I indulge myself by watching "Guardians of the Galaxy" – silly, harmless fun. I think I've seen that raccoon guy, Rocket, prowling the streets back home after dark. We arrive at Hong Kong airport for the transfer flight to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We were ... read more
