Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona October 23rd 2009

For the first 3 days of our fall break we spent it in Barcelona Spain. We flew Ryanair from Pisa to Girona, I suggest not taking Ryanair. They offer extremely cheap flights but for a reason. You have to print out your boarding passes ahead of time, if you don't it is a 50 euro fee so make sure to do that if you book through them. Also, there are no assigned seats which would be fine if it was in an organized way to get to the plane. However, about an hour before the actual flight and boarding time people form a huge group in front of the gate to wait and then people seriously run to the plane to get a seat which I don't understand. The flight itself wasn't bad but it was ... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia October 17th 2009

A last minute trip was to Perugia. We just took the train from Florence, it was about 2 hours or so, not too bad. It was a very pretty train ride too so it went by fast. Once we got there, we had to follow a tour group because we had to take a bus and there were about 5 different routes that they were going so we just tagged along. After we got off the bus, it was quite a walk to the actual festival. The festival only lasts 2 weeks and we went the last week. Perugia is where the Baci chocolate is made. They put chocolate on everything at this festival though. As soon as we walked into the festival, we got to taste chocolate pasta...it was not good. They have these cards ... read more

A couple of weeks ago we went to the Boboli Gardens which is connected with the Pitti Palace but we didn't go into the palace that day. We stopped to get a few sandwiches and ate them in the Gardens. The Boboli Gardens are open and uphill so it was a little hike to the top, and along the way there are paths to either side to explore further. A person could spend all day in the Gardens exploring statues, monuments, and just walking around. There are bunch of little museums connected to it too, but we didn't go into those. The view from the top is amazing though. We then climbed the steps of Michaelangelo, where the fake David is. The view at the top of that was amazing too. There is a little outside ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Central Bohemian Region September 29th 2009

Prague was an excellent place to visit. I went there with three of my friends and we stayed in Czech Inn, it's a hostel and a hotel. However, the hostel room we stayed in was just as nice as a nice hotel. The only thing different was the bathroom. Breakfast was included in our travel package we chose and it was probably the best breakfast I have had in Europe so far. We arrived in Prague Friday at around 11am, it ended up being a 13 hour drive from Florence. We then got to do a walking tour of Prague and had a very funny tour guide who knew we wouldn't remember dates so just stuck with the entertaining information such as that the movie Eurotrip was not filmed all over Europe but just in Prague. ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich September 21st 2009

I decided last week at this time to travel to Munich for Oktoberfest with a group from Florence. I was kind of worried at first because I didn't go with the people that I've been hanging out with the most in Italy. However, it turned out to be a lot of fun. Our hostel was an hour outside of Munich and was extremely nice, compared to the one my friend stayed at this weekend. I had to room with 3 people I didn't know because I signed up so late, but they were 3 of the nicest girls, I definitely got lucky. We left Thursday night and we had to take a bus which is about an 8 hour drive, luckily there was a bathroom on the bus and we got to watch movies basically the ... read more

We finally moved in to our apartment yesterday!!! It's really cool but they said I can get electrocuted by my bed because the frame is metal and there's electrical chords around it, so I think I'm just going to sleep on the couches. It doesn't have a/c so that sucks but other than it's pretty cool. You can see the kitchen from the living room which is kind of weird. I also think that I have bed bugs which they warned us about but I didn't think would happen...I've got to go check it out later. We've just been having orientation the past few days, they've finally let us on our own for a little bit. I went to dinner with a bunch of girls from the program. we got the internet tonight so we decided ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Pompei September 1st 2009

We had to get up really really early to make the 3 hour drive to Pompei so I didn't do anything the night before. The drive there was really boring, it was similar to driving to IU, nothing really to look at, but once we got there it was amazing. It was so hot as usual, I did not expect it to be this hot at all! Once we got into Pompei it was so weird to see houses and building from over a thousand years ago and to imagine what it was like to live in that time. Everything used to be marble which just amazes me. We were able to see an old house and how they were set up and there was a stray dog sleeping in front of one of the gates ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome August 30th 2009

2nd day I realized something today….I want to marry an Italian. You cannot tell how old they are and there are all tall dark and handsome. We started today with a language class which was difficult but informative. We learned greetings and how to ask how are you and how to answer, days, and months. A couple of girls and myself decided to just explore Rome for a couple hours so we went back to Fontana di Trevi and got a quick lunch. I just got a mozzarella and tomato sandwich (go figure). Everything is actually a lot cheaper than I thought it would be, a huge bottle of water is just ,80 but that could just be the area. Then we just walked…for a long time. We got a little lost but eventually found our ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome August 30th 2009

So I just arrived in Rome today!!! I got to meet everyone at the gate before we got on the plane, they all seem pretty nice so no worries yet! Everyone was just really awake and hyper and so I probably seemed anti-social considering I was exhausted and didn’t really make an effort to meet anyone at first. The 8 ½ hour plane ride wasn’t that bad, food was awful but I slept for most of it. They said they were going to show a movie and I very well may have slept right through that beginning to end because the only thing I saw on the tv was this woman showing people how to exercise while sitting down. After we got to Rome, we had to wait about an hour for a couple people who ... read more
