Hi all Nothing's really happened since Friday, but I like to keep you all updated anyhow. I got through a load of 7th stadard letters which are being sent to Rose yesterday, some of them say some sweet stuff, but funnier was an essay I found in Saravanan's book on his hobbies. If you don't know him you won't find it that funny, but I spoke to Rose about it on the phone later and laughed about it. I felt a bit lonely yesterday because nothing was going on, so today I'm come into Tiru where there's some action. I'm about to mark the 8th standard essays in Ushas (yes Kim + Gemma, these are still the ones that they did last Tuesday.) This morning I was caught red handed in the act of trying to ... read more

Hi all I'll start by saying my flight home is now booked for the 11th June, it's due to arrive at Heathrow at 11.35 am. Mum, I'm sorry it's a Monday, but I can easily make it back to Chelmsford by myself if it's really awkward, I even contemplated with Kim + Gemma how fun it would be to make the journey back entirely by myself, although I think the walk back from Eves Corner would be tough and I left my door key at home, so that's probably not a clever idea. Anyway, I'm by myself here at the moment. When I've been busy teaching or making a trip into Tiruvannamalai I've felt fine, but when I have marking or planning and I'm left by myself I miss the company of people a lot, I ... read more

Hey all. If all gets sorted out I fly home in exactly 3 months, but the STA travel website is pretty slow at the moment. On the subject of travelling, we've changed our plans a little bit, and we're now doing Sri Lanka at the start of our travels, in 3 weeks time it will be the 2nd of April and we could be on our 12 hour train to Trivandrm, or we may wish to see Mysore. Anyhow we'll be getting our return flight to Sri Lanka for 75 quid from Trivandrum, around the 4th April, then we'll get back there around 18th and do Kerala etc afterwards. On Friday night we climbed up the 2500 ft or so mountain in Tiru. We're all okay now, I'm clean, awake after 12 hours sleep last night ... read more

Hey all. Not much to say about teaching, it goes on as ever. But there's plenty to say about my camera. There are pictures to go with my update of Bangalore, although only the best ones are there because I took so many. In fact it's a bit embarrassing, I appeared in more of my photos than anyone else! I'll try not to let it happen again. Then there are a couple of pictures from my placement, but I'll add to them over time. Anyway, we had lots of fun in Bangalore, lots of young people having fun. We still got on with everyone and had a lot of fun. It was really like many other nights out I had, building a fort out of frames, mattresses and sheets when we got back to the dorm ... read more

Just a brief update. We got yesterday afternoon off school and got a 6 hour bus up, and by coincidence Me, Colin and Kim got on the same bus as Claire P and Catherine, which was good. We've met up with Rose here and it was good tobe re-united. But we've also met a lot of the other GAP girls. We're staying in a dorm with Nicole and Eileen. It's cheap, it's clean, it's very central, it's comfortable and as not many people know about it there's nobody else there, so we can chat all night. It was a very good find from Nicole and Eileen. Rose, Kim, Claire P and Catherine are squeezed into a double room. Jenny and Claire are also in a double room in the same hotel, and we're all quite close ... read more

Hello all, My teaching's got much better since I last taught, 7th standard are familiar with me and we can share quite a few laughs together but at the same time we get through the work. The big test is tommorow when I'll see how many out of 31 hand in the first major homework I've set them (which I'll need to have marked by Friday!) I find that in the vast amount of classes I share with Kim (8th once a day, 9th once a day and 4b once a day) I find it naturally ends up with her being more the teacher and me the helper, but we're both happy with how it works and I can always jump if she seems a bit stuck. I'd say that my favourite classes are definitely 7th ... read more

Hello all Things are begginning to change around at my placement. Firstly, Gemma is in Kerala for 2 weeks, and will get back in a couple of weekends. Also, Rose has left for Dehli. This means a lot more work for me, and I'm now taking all of 7th standard by myself. I was very worried about this, but today's lesson went really well, even though it left me with a lot of marking. I'm feeling much more confident about the whole thing after today though. However this is a cloud on my horizon at the moment. It's that it all seems to be coming to an end very quickly. Gemma and Kim need to get to Nepal before their visas expire, so they leave on the 15th March. Colin needs to go back to the ... read more

Hi all. I've got a lot of things to write today, and plenty of time on my side to do it with! This week has had my sides splitting on multiple occasions, it's been great fun. I was very down on Friday after my 7th Standard after school class didn't turn up, but it's all picked up. The day after Me, Colin and Rose went into Kanji because Colin wanted to buy a kind of male skirt thing (I wasn't that interested - and he's since discovered that there can be difficult practicalities sitting down - and all the students and staff have had something to say about it!) Rose wanted to see the hostel again to see the kids, I think her and Kim miss them quite a lot, they were quite resentful about moving ... read more

Hey all. I'm against the clock here because I have to be back in Kanji helping the 7th standard slow learners by 4. Mid term exams started today so normal lessons are off, but I offered my help after school. I'm doing it by myself at the moment as Gemma's in hospital with a foot infection, but she should be out tommorow. The class work really hard, and it just makes how bad they do in their tests feel even worse at times. One boy called Barathon works ridiculously hard and he got 11 out of 36 in the test I set on Wednesday, and he's just an example. SO anyway, I'm rushing back soon to give them all the best chance next week, although one boy has been absent for the last 2 weeks and ... read more

Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Mamallapuram February 3rd 2007

Hi all. I'm in Mamallapuram at the moment, and am feeling very relaxed. Me, Colin, Gemma, Rose and Kim all came down yesterday evening and are staying in a cheap guesthouse that has hammocks on the roof! Last night we sat in a rooftop restraunt/bar that overlooked the beach and played very chilled out music. We must have stayed up until about midnight and then stayed another hour or so in our hammocks, it was a very late night but a good night. Something I'ver learnt is that beer is not cheap ouyt here. A 650ml bottles costs around 1.20, which is really not much of a reduction from U.K. prices, which is surprising. Anyway, today we got up leisurely and we did a bit of shopping in the morning. I bought a slightly offensive and ... read more
